Italy says railways hit by 'serious sabotage' as Winter Olympics begin

Serious Sabotage Hits Italian Railways Just Days Before Winter Olympics Begin

Suspected attacks on northern Italy's railway network have crippled the country's rail system, with severe disruptions reported as thousands gathered to kick off the Winter Olympics. According to authorities, three separate incidents involving damage to railway lines are believed to be connected to the Games.

A fire hit rail infrastructure between Bologna and Venice, causing up to two-and-a-half hour delays, while police later discovered severed cables and an explosive device at locations nearby. The Ministry of Transport described the incidents as "serious sabotage" that mirrored vandalism during the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Police are investigating the incidents, but no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks yet. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has reassured the public that these actions do not tarnish Italy's image and have instead made the country's participation in the Games even more compelling and positive.

The Winter Olympics kicked off with an opening ceremony on Friday evening in Milan and Cortina in northeastern Italy. The games will be held over hundreds of miles, including locations such as the Alps and Dolomite mountains, where several events are scheduled to take place.

Rail travel has been severely impacted due to the disruptions, but it appears that normal traffic is returning to order by Saturday afternoon.

OMG, can't believe this is happening right before one of the biggest international events of the year 🤯! Like, what's the point of sabotaging something just for kicks? It's not like Italy doesn't have enough on their plate already with all the preparation for the Olympics... I mean, come on people! 🙄 Anyway, hope the police can figure out who's behind this ASAP so we can get back to normal life 👍. And btw, Matteo Salvini's response is on point, let's show these saboteurs that Italy isn't going to be intimidated 😎

Ugh 🤦‍♀️, sabotage like this can never be good... especially not just days before the Olympics! What if they can't get the trains running smoothly? I mean, thousands of people are traveling from all over for these games, and now they're stuck with delayed trains. Can you imagine how frustrating that must be?

And, seriously, who does this kind of thing?! 😤 It's like they think it's some sort of sick joke. Newsflash: vandalism is never funny or acceptable! I'm glad the police are investigating and trying to figure out what's going on.

I just hope the Olympics can still happen without any more major disruptions... Italy has worked so hard to get this right, and it's a shame if something like this brings them down 🤞.

Ugh, this is just a mess 🤯! I mean, on one hand, it's awesome that Italy is still hosting the Winter Olympics despite all this drama 🎉. It's like they're showing the world that even when things go wrong (and in this case, really badly), we can still come together and make it happen.

But at the same time, I'm super worried about the security situation 😬. Sabotage? Explosive devices? Severed cables? This is getting serious fast 🚨. And what if someone gets hurt or...I don't know, something even worse happens?

It's crazy to think that these incidents could have happened just days before the Games started 🤯. I guess you never really know what's gonna go down, but it's always good to be prepared and all that 😅.

Anyway, hope everything gets back to normal soon 🙏, and we can actually enjoy the Olympics without worrying about our trains blowing up 🚂💥.

man this is so lame... can't believe these people would mess with Italy's Olympic vibe like that 🤦‍♂️. first of all, sabotage on the rail system just days before the games? that's some serious bad luck for Italy... and now they're having to deal with thousands of tourists using up their infrastructure 😩. and what's with the lack of a clear culprit? should be super easy to figure out who's behind this, but apparently not 🤔. still, I'm sure the Italians will bounce back from this and show everyone how amazing they are during the games 💪🏼. hope no one gets hurt or anything... that would be just awful 😞

OMG I was so worried when I saw the news about the sabotage on Italian railways like what's going on?! 🤯 The Winter Olympics are supposed to be all about promoting unity and friendship but now it's just causing more drama & delays 😩 Matteo Salvini is trying to spin it as a positive, but honestly I don't know if it's working... I'm more concerned about the safety of the athletes & visitors who got delayed or stuck on trains 🚂💨 My cousin was supposed to fly into Milan for the games yesterday and now she's going to be stuck there for another day 😩 Fingers crossed that the police can figure out what's going on & get everything back to normal ASAP 💪

Ugh, can't believe this just happened right before the Olympics 🤦‍♂️! Italy's gotta be all about the tourism and prestige now, so they're just gonna roll with it? Like, what even was the point of those "serious sabotage" incidents if nobody's taking credit for 'em? Did anyone else notice that Matteo Salvini is kinda glossing over the fact that this is a big deal and could've really messed up Italy's reputation? I mean, sure, more events in the Alps and Dolomites are awesome, but what about the inconvenience to all those people who had plans to attend the games or travel there? It's like, how's that gonna affect the whole vibe of the Olympics?!
