Thousands of mourners pay respects to Kenya's former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Nairobi. Five people were killed and hundreds injured during stampedes in previous days.

Raila Odinga, known affectionately as "Baba" by his supporters, was laid to rest on Sunday at his family's homestead in western Kenya's Bondo. The Anglican service and burial took place without major incident after an outpouring of national grief this week.

Odinga, 80, died from a suspected heart attack at a health clinic in southern India on Wednesday. His body was received by thousands of mourners in Nairobi on Thursday. Four public viewing events have been held in the past three days, attracting thousands of mourners and leaving five people dead and hundreds injured during stampedes.

As Kenya heads into a potentially volatile election in 2027, Odinga's death leaves a leadership vacuum in the opposition, with no obvious successor. The former Prime Minister played a central role in returning the country to multi-party democracy in the 1990s and is credited as the main force behind a widely praised constitution passed in 2010.

Odinga was respected across the continent and beyond for his pro-democracy stance. Dignitaries from across Africa, including Kenya's President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and Nigeria's former President Olusegun Obasanjo, attended the final interment of a man described as a "selfless pan-Africanist".

Odinga was not just a Kenyan dignitary but also loved by his countrymen. People want to honour him for all the sacrifices he made in this country. As Al Jazeera's correspondent Catherine Soi put it, "People here want to honour him for all the sacrifices he made in this country."

The private burial followed a funeral mass earlier in the day at a nearby university. Raila Odinga's son and namesake, Raila junior, delivered an emotional speech saying, "Now finally Baba is home." The casket was draped in the Kenyan flag, and military officers saluted as the coffin was lowered into the ground, with trumpets playing the Last Post.

😔 I'm still getting used to the news of Raila Odinga's passing 🤕. It's a big loss for Kenya and Africa as a whole 🌍. The man was a true leader and a symbol of democracy and freedom 💪. His legacy will live on, but it's sad that he won't be around to see Kenya navigate the challenges ahead 🤞. I think it's amazing how his son, Raila junior, found the strength to deliver an emotional speech at the burial ceremony 💕. The outpouring of grief from Kenyans and dignitaries alike is a testament to Odinga's impact on the continent 👏. As we move forward into the 2027 election, I hope Kenya can come together in peace and find a way to honor Odinga's memory while moving the country forward 🙏💫.

man this outpouring of grief in kenya is insane, thousands of people showing up to pay respects to raila odinga, it's like he was a national hero 🙏. and can you believe those stampedes, 5 people dead and hundreds injured, it's just heartbreaking 😔. his legacy as a pro-democracy advocate will live on though, no one else is stepping up to fill the leadership vacuum in the opposition right now 🤔. it's gonna be interesting with the election coming up in 2027, whoever takes over has big shoes to fill 👞.

I don’t usually comment but I just feel so bad for Kenya right now... Losing a leader like Raila Odinga is never easy, especially when he's been loved by so many people. It's crazy how his passing has left a power vacuum in the opposition and everyone's trying to figure out who'll take over next 🤕. He was such an important figure for Kenya's transition to democracy back in the 90s and it's amazing that dignitaries from all over Africa are coming to pay their respects to him 💔. It's not just about his achievements as a politician, but also the sacrifices he made for his country... people really want to honor him for that ❤️. I hope Kenya can get through this tough time without any further issues 🤞.

just watched that huge stampede thing at one of public viewings 🤕... can't believe it happened again, people losing their lives over Odinga's body 🙏... hope they got medical help in time for those who were injured 🚑... anyway, gotta wonder how this gonna affect 2027 election? 🤔... opposition all like what's next now that Odinga is gone 🤷‍♂️... guess the country's still in a mess 😕... even with all the dignitaries showing respect, you can't help but feel kinda somber about it 😔...

🙏 just sad to see Kenya lose a true leader like Raila Odinga... his legacy will live on & his impact on Kenyan democracy is still felt today 💪 80 yrs old but left behind a nation that's more democratic than ever 🌎 rest in peace, Baba 👊

I'm sad to see Odinga go 🤕, he really did make a difference in Kenya's politics and beyond. But I gotta wonder how they managed to keep things under control during those public viewings? 5 deaths is way too much 🤯, especially considering the outpouring of grief from the crowds.

I also don't know about this "leadership vacuum" thing... shouldn't the opposition just sorta... step up and claim a new leader or something? It seems like a pretty big gap in leadership now that Odinga is gone. And what's gonna happen in '27 with the election, anyway? Shouldn't they've figured out a better system by now 🤔.

On the bright side, I'm glad Odinga got to be honored by so many people from around Africa and beyond... he really was a unifying figure 👏. But still, it's weird that his own son had to deliver an emotional speech about him being "home"... kinda feels like they're trying too hard to fill the void 🤷‍♂️.

😔 It's truly heart-wrenching to see Kenya in mourning after losing a true national hero like Raila Odinga. The outpouring of grief from thousands of mourners is a testament to his impact on Kenyan politics and society... His legacy will undoubtedly shape the country's future, especially with an election looming in 2027 🤯. Who will take up the mantle of leadership in the opposition? It's a void that needs to be carefully considered ⚖️. As we bid farewell to "Baba", we remember his tireless efforts to promote democracy and multi-party governance in Kenya... His pro-democracy stance earned him respect across Africa 🌍. Rest in peace, Raila Odinga 👨‍🌾

I'm telling ya, something fishy went down on Sunday when they laid Raila Odinga to rest... I mean, the whole thing seemed too smooth, you know? Thousands of mourners just showing up out of nowhere without any issues, it's just too convenient. And what about all those public viewing events that were held before his burial? It was like they wanted everyone to see him one last time... and then BAM! Five people dead and hundreds injured in stampedes. That's not a natural reaction, my friend 🤔. I'm thinking maybe the gov't or Odinga's own team might've orchestrated it to draw attention away from the leadership vacuum after his death... just a hunch, but you never know what's really going on behind closed doors 😏.

🙏 just so sad to hear about Raila Odinga's passing 🌹 he was such an iconic figure & his legacy will be truly missed in Kenya & beyond... I mean can you imagine a future without him at the helm of opposition? 🤔 its like leaving a part of your heart behind ❤️ at least his family is receiving so much love & respect from their people, it warms my heart to see that kind of outpouring of grief 💕 and I love how they honored him with all those public viewing events... it was like the whole nation came together to pay their respects 🌈 rest in peace, Baba 👑

I'm so sorry I missed this thread 😔, but Raila Odinga's passing really hit me. It's crazy to think he played such a huge role in Kenya's transition to multi-party democracy back in the 90s. I mean, the fact that his constitution was praised by so many people shows how dedicated he was to creating positive change 🙏. As Africa is getting more connected, it's amazing to see leaders like Odinga being respected across borders. The Last Post being played during his burial was such a beautiful touch, you know? It really showed the respect and love that everyone had for him ❤️. Anyway, I hope people are taking care of each other in these tough times 😊.

just saw this thread about baba's funeral 🙏 and gotta say, its crazy how much of an impact one man can have on a nation's politics. i mean, he played a huge role in getting kenya to where it is today, and now his passing leaves a void that needs to be filled. dont know if the opposition has a clear plan for 2027 yet tho 🤔

I'm still trying to process the outpouring of grief for Raila Odinga 🙏. It's clear that he had a massive impact on Kenya and the wider world 🌎. As a country mourns its loss, it raises questions about who will take the reins next 🤔. The opposition is now left without an obvious leader, which could be a challenging time for them ahead of the 2027 election ⏰. On a personal note, I'm glad Raila junior's speech was so emotional - it's clear that he and his family are still feeling the weight of their loss 💔. The fact that dignitaries from all over Africa and beyond attended the burial is a testament to Odinga's legacy as a champion of democracy 🌟.

man this is a sad time for kenya 😔.. raila odinga's passing leaves a huge void in kenyan politics 🤯... his legacy is like whoa 🙌... he played such a key role in shaping the country's democracy and constitution 📜... it's crazy that his death has sparked these stampedes and violence 🚨... i hope his people can find a way to channel their grief into something positive 🕊️... and with an election looming in 2027, kenya needs strong leaders like odinga to navigate the challenges ahead 💪... anyway, it's clear that raila was more than just a politician - he was a symbol of hope and unity for his country ❤️... rest in peace, baba 🌼

🙏 still can't believe he's gone... 80 years young and went out like that 😒. i mean, pro-democracy hero and all, but at least he got to see his son take over the reins... or not 🤷‍♂️. anyway, gotta respect the man for his legacy, even if it is a bit of a leadership vacuum now 🤔. can't wait to see how this plays out in 2027... just hope the opposition doesn't implode 💥.
