The US Nuclear Agency on Brink of Crisis as Government Shutdown Draggs On.

A critical nuclear agency is now sending 80% of its workforce home, leaving behind a skeleton crew to keep the nation's nuclear arsenal secure. The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), which manages the country's nuclear stockpile and runs non-proliferation programs, has exhausted its carryover reserves as the government shutdown enters its 17th day.

The agency, part of the Department of Energy, has notified around 1,400 employees that they will be furloughed without pay starting on Monday. Only 375 staff members are deemed essential to continue working, according to an NNSA notice obtained by Politico. The decision comes as the shutdown continues to drag into its second weekend and surpasses a 16-day funding lapse in US history.

House Armed Services Committee Chair Mike Rogers warned that the situation is "not employees you want to go home", given their crucial role in managing and handling nuclear warheads. However, most scientific research, stockpile maintenance, and global security programs will be suspended, potentially delaying sensitive national defense projects.

The National Nuclear Security Administration's office of secure transportation will continue to operate until October 27, but other critical functions will come to a standstill. Energy Secretary Chris Wright is scheduled to visit the agency in Las Vegas on Monday to discuss the shutdown's impact on America's nuclear deterrent.

The ongoing stalemate has raised concerns about potential airport disruptions during the upcoming Thanksgiving travel period if the crisis continues. Speaker Mike Johnson has blamed Senate Democrats for the impasse, saying the country "is barreling toward one of the longest shutdowns in American history, unless Democrats drop their demands".

As the US government shutdown reaches a critical juncture, the nation's nuclear security remains at risk. With no clear end in sight, lawmakers are urged to find common ground and avoid further disruptions to essential services.

This is getting super concerning 🚨. The fact that they're having to send 80% of their staff home without pay just because of a government shutdown is not ideal at all. I mean, think about it - we're talking about the people responsible for keeping our nuclear arsenal secure. It's not like they can just leave those guys behind and expect everything to magically work out. The NNSA has some pretty serious responsibilities, from managing the country's nuclear stockpile to running non-proliferation programs.

I'm also worried about what this means for national defense projects that are already behind schedule. If most of these scientific research and maintenance functions come to a standstill, it could really set us back in terms of our ability to defend ourselves. And let's not forget about the potential airport disruptions during Thanksgiving - I can just imagine the chaos if they're unable to keep things running smoothly.

It's not like this is something that can be taken lightly either. We need people who are dedicated and passionate about keeping our country safe, and we need them working together in a cohesive way. The fact that lawmakers are still at odds over funding is just frustrating - can't they find some common ground? This is what happens when politics gets in the way of doing what's best for the country πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

🀯 oh man this is crazy! 17 days of shutdown already? how can ppl just sit around doing nothing while our nukes are at risk 🚨πŸ’₯ i know there needs to be budget cuts but this is like the ultimate example of how important funding for critical agencies is πŸ€‘ seriously, what's gonna happen when we're in a real crisis situation? do we wanna rely on a skeleton crew to keep us safe? 😬 hopefully our leaders can come together and find a solution ASAP πŸ‘Š

πŸ˜’ 17 days in? Can't they just work something out already?! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ I mean, nuclear warheads are a pretty big deal, right? The fact that only 375 people can keep the whole thing running is concerning. What happens if one of them gets sick or quits? 😬 It's not like there's a backup plan in place... and now they're going to have to delay all these important defense projects because of it 🚫. I just don't get how politics gets in the way of keeping people safe πŸ’”.

omg this is crazy! the us government shutdown is getting really serious 🀯 nuclear agency employees are going home without pay and it's like a ticking time bomb for national security πŸ•°οΈ what if there's an emergency and no one's around to handle it? ⚠️ energy secretary chris wright needs to come up with a plan ASAP πŸ’‘ meanwhile, lawmakers need to stop arguing and work together 🀝 this is not the time for politics, we're talking about our country's security here! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

omg have you guys ever noticed how food delivery apps always take forever to show up when you order late at nite 🀯 i mean idk if it's just me but sometimes i'm literally waiting like 20 mins for my pizza to arrive and then the app finally shows the estimated arrival time as 45 minutes from now lol what's going on with that?! πŸ•πŸ‘€ anyway, back to this nuclear stuff... sounds super serious tho πŸ€”

🀯 I'm getting old, remember when we used to have more respect for our government workers? Now they're just gonna have to go without pay for 17 days πŸ€‘πŸ˜©. This shutdown is crazy, what's next? Airport closures during Thanksgiving? πŸ›«οΈπŸ˜± I hope the energy secretary Chris Wright can get some sense into the lawmakers' heads. We need to keep our nuclear arsenal safe not a politician's game of blame πŸ€”πŸ’‘

omg what r they even thinkin 😱 this is not good at all! 1400 ppl losin thier jobs cos of gov shutdown? it's like they forgot that people got families too 🀯 the nsa needs 80% staff but only gettin 4% of em? how r they expectin to keep everything runnin smoothly w/ so few peeps? πŸš«πŸ’” and what about all those ppl countin on paychecks during this shutdown? it's like bein left in th dark πŸ˜• i just hopin lawmakers can come 2gthr soon & end dis crisis ASAP πŸ’ͺ

My heart goes out to all those people who will be affected by this shutdown πŸ€•. It's not just a matter of government funds, it's lives that will be impacted - the staff who have to go without pay, their families who will struggle to make ends meet, and the security of our nation's nuclear arsenal which is being put at risk 😟.

I can only imagine how stressful this must be for everyone involved, especially when you know that your work could be putting lives in danger πŸ’”. Let's all send some positive vibes to those affected by this shutdown 🌈. We need to stay calm and keep hoping for a resolution as soon as possible πŸ™. It's not just about the politicians making deals, it's about people like us who care about what's at stake ❀️.
