Los Angeles County Settles for $828M to Compensate Victims of Sexual Abuse, Amidst Ongoing Investigation into Fraudulent Claims.

A Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting ended without approval for a proposed settlement worth nearly $1 billion, bringing the city closer to paying out thousands of claims related to sexual abuse in juvenile facilities dating back decades. The total cost could surpass $4 billion if the board ultimately approves both proposed settlements.

The county reached an agreement with lawyers representing over 400 victims who claim they suffered abuse while being cared for by the county's social services department or after it placed them in foster care and juvenile detention facilities. Under this latest settlement, individual awards would be decided based on factors including severity of alleged abuse.

Los Angeles County has been dealing with a number of sexual abuse scandals in recent years. The county approved a historic $4 billion settlement in April for allegations dating back to the 1950s. This is the largest such deal in US history and includes payments ranging from $100,000 to $3 million per victim.

As part of this settlement, officials said that claims brought by the law firm Downtown LA Law Group will be scrutinized more closely than usual. Investigators have already uncovered evidence that some people received money for filing claims, including nine plaintiffs who were paid for their lawsuits and four others who made fraudulent claims.

In response to these developments, Los Angeles County has established new safeguards to prevent abuse and respond quickly if it occurs, including a hotline for reporting child sexual abuse allegations against county employees.

Ugh I'm so done with these online forums! 🀯 Can't we just focus on the real issues without getting sidetracked by drama? Anyway, back to this LA County settlement... $828M is a lot of money but think about all the lives that were affected by their abuse and negligence. It's disheartening to see that some people are trying to scam the system and make a quick buck. πŸ’Έ I get it, mistakes happen, but the fact that they're cracking down on fraudulent claims now just feels like too little, too late. πŸ˜” What really gets me is how this settlement could've happened if they'd done things right in the first place... just saying. πŸ‘Ž

man I'm so glad the county is finally taking responsibility for what happened all those years ago πŸ™πŸ’― they're like setting an example for other places that might be dealing with similar issues now I'm not surprised though, it's been a long time coming and there are still gonna be people who try to take advantage of the system or get paid out for stuff they didn't even go through πŸ˜’ but at least now they have more safeguards in place so hopefully no one else has to suffer like those kids did πŸ€•

The recent settlement of $828M is quite concerning πŸ€”... I mean, think about it - nearly 400 victims and their lawyers are getting paid out, which is a good thing on the surface, but at what cost? The fact that some people filed claims for money and got caught up in it isn't ideal. It makes me wonder if these settlements can be abused too πŸ€‘.

On the other hand, I do appreciate that LA County is taking steps to prevent abuse and respond quickly if it happens. A hotline for reporting child sexual abuse allegations against county employees is a great idea πŸ“ž. It's like they're saying 'we get it, this has happened before, and we want to make sure it doesn't happen again'.

The total cost of $4 billion could be staggering πŸ€‘... But I guess when victims are involved, it's hard to put a price on their suffering. I just hope these settlements lead to real change, not just a Band-Aid solution πŸ’Š.

omg i cant even imagine the pain & trauma those victims went thru πŸ€•πŸŒŸ they deserve every penny of that 828m settlement πŸ’Έ my heart goes out to the ppl who were abused in those facilities πŸ‘Ά my fave org is doing amazing work on this case πŸ’ͺ gotta give props to la county for taking responsibility & stepping up their game βš–οΈ cant believe there wasnt more scrutiny over those fraudulent claims πŸ€” hope they're punished for trying to scam the system πŸ˜’

omg 😱 this is like so sad πŸ€• think about all those ppl affected by the system failin 🚫 4eva $828m is just a drop in the ocean tho 🌊 considering the total cost could be $4billion lol πŸ€‘ at least they're tryna do better tho πŸ’ͺ by implementin new safeguards and whatnot πŸ“

i feel for the ppl who made those fraudulent claims tho πŸ€” think about all the ppl gettin paid just 4 fillin out a form πŸ™„ but atleast they got caught 😏 hope the ppl who did suffer abuse get the help & justice they deserve πŸ’•

just heard that los angeles county is about to pay out 828m to settle victims of sexual abuse... meanwhile, another $4billion is still on the table if they approve more settlements... kinda mind blown that this has been going on for decades and people are still getting hurt... how many more victims gotta suffer before we start seeing some real change? πŸ€•πŸ’”

omg what's going on with this LA County settlement?? they're settling for $828M to compensate victims of sexual abuse in juvenile facilities... that's still crazy considering the total cost could be over $4 BILLION if approved πŸ€‘πŸ‘€ and it gets even worse, investigators found out some people were paid for filing claims which is just wrong πŸ’”.

i feel so bad for those victims who went through this kind of trauma... the fact that they had to wait decades for justice is just heartbreaking ❀️. and now with these new safeguards in place, i hope it's not too little, too late 🀞.
