man I'm still reeling from this incredible display of athleticism and skill

... but can we talk about what it says about our society that we're so obsessed with measuring the greatness of human beings through numbers and scores? like Ilia Malinin is an amazing skater, no doubt, but does his record-breaking performance really say anything about him as a person or a human being?
I mean, think about it... all those quadruple jumps, they just kind of blur together after a while, don't they? And the pressure to perform, the weight of expectation, it must be crushing at times. yet we're still willing to cheer and applaud and give him accolades for doing what comes naturally to him.
and what about the women's side? Alysa Liu's success is inspiring, but also a little concerning... she's not even 20 years old yet, and already she's feeling pressure to perform? it's like we're putting the burden of expectation on her shoulders way too early in her life.
anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is that there's more to life than just winning and losing, right? can't we find a way to appreciate the beauty and complexity of human performance without having to measure it all with numbers and scores?
