Mamdani clarifies NYC won't check immigration status for universal childcare enrollees

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has confirmed that the city will not check the immigration status of children enrolling in its universal pre-K and 3-K programs, as part of a move to provide free childcare to all New Yorkers regardless of their background.

According to Mamdani, these programs are open to any child turning 3 or 4 anytime in 2026, which could save families tens of thousands of dollars annually. This initiative is being implemented by the mayor's administration in partnership with New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

Mamdani emphasized that the city values its diversity and wants to protect the rights of every New Yorker. He stated that ICE agents are not allowed to access schools, hospitals, or city properties without a judicial warrant signed by a judge. Most of the time, ICE agents fail to provide such documentation, making it clear that this policy is meant to keep families safe from harassment.

The mayor also made headlines last year when he called the detention of an NYC employee by ICE an "assault on our democracy."

This is sooo cool!!! 🀩 The fact that NY City is doing away with checking kids' immigration status for pre-K and 3-K is literally a dream come true. I mean, think about it - families are already stressed out enough, and the last thing they need is some dude showing up at their kid's school to ask if they're undocumented. It's just too much. But you know what's even better? The mayor is doing this because he actually cares about people, not just politicians talking points πŸ™. And can you imagine how many families are gonna save like $10,000 a year? That's some serious cash for a peace of mind. I'm def feeling all the feels about this one - it's proof that good things can still happen in this crazy world 😊

I'm feeling kinda mixed about this new rule πŸ€”. I mean, saving families some serious cash is def a good thing πŸ’Έ, but at what cost? It's already hard enough for immigrants to navigate the system without having to worry about their kid being checked every time they enroll in school... like, what if they just want to focus on getting an education and growing up without all that drama? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I'm also a bit curious about how this is gonna play out in practice - are there even going to be checks done or is it more of a 'fly under the radar' situation? And what about parents who don't want their kid's immigration status checked at all? Like, they're trying to avoid scrutiny but still need proof of residency or something... 🀯

But hey, if keeping families safe from harassment by ICE agents is what this policy is all about πŸ’ͺ, then I'm all for it. Just hoping it doesn't lead to any unintended consequences down the line 🀞

😊 oh man i'm literally getting chills thinking about all those little kids who just wanna learn and play without being worried about their parents being deported πŸ€• it's so important that the city is taking a stand like this to support families and protect them from harm πŸ’– mamdani sounds like an amazing mayor, his words really speak to the heart of what we should be fighting for in our communities 🌎 love how he's framing this as about protecting rights and diversity too πŸ‘« can't wait to see all these free childcare programs come to life and know that some families are gonna breathe a huge sigh of relief πŸ’†β€β™€οΈ

😊 just saw this news and I gotta say its kinda refreshing to see a city do something nice for all its citizens regardless of their background. like, who doesn't need some help with childcare costs you know? πŸ€” its great that the mayor is taking steps to protect families from harassment too. ICE agents shouldnt be making people feel uncomfortable just because of their immigration status. and good on NYC for being inclusive and providing opportunities for all kids to get a solid education and care. fingers crossed this initiative works out smoothly

I'm so hyped about this new development in New York City!!! πŸ™Œ They're really stepping up to provide free childcare for all families, regardless of their background. It's amazing that they're prioritizing kids' education and family well-being over immigration status.

This move is a total win-win for the city and its residents. Not only will it save families some serious cash, but it'll also ensure that no kid is left behind due to financial constraints. I mean, can you imagine having to choose between paying bills or sending your little one to preschool? It's just not fair.

I love that Mayor Mamdani is all about protecting the rights of every New Yorker and promoting diversity. It's so refreshing to see a leader taking a stand for what's right, especially when it comes to issues like immigration and family safety. πŸ’– Let's keep spreading positivity and support for this amazing initiative! 🌟

This is a total game changer for NYC! I'm loving the fact that they're prioritizing education and childcare over, like, super sensitive immigration policies πŸ€—. It's all about giving back to the community and promoting inclusivity, you know? Kids should be able to get an amazing education without worrying about their parents' status πŸŽ“.

I gotta say, it's a huge win for families who are struggling to make ends meet. Tens of thousands of dollars saved each year is a massive deal - that's like, so much money for them to invest in other important things πŸ€‘. And kudos to the mayor and Governor Hochul for working together on this initiative 🀝.

It's all about protecting families from harassment, you know? No one should have to worry about ICE agents showing up at their kid's school or hospital without a warrant 🚫. It's just common sense, really.

I gotta wonder how this is gonna play out. Everyone's all about keeping their kids safe, but what happens when you're not exactly sure who you're dealing with? I mean, we just found out that some parents were getting threatened by ICE agents at their kids' schools... now we're just gonna let anyone in without checking? It seems like a good intention, but I'm worried it's gonna be a hot mess. And what about the paperwork? Like, someone's gotta keep track of who's who and make sure everyone's on the right side of things. We can't afford to have our kids' info floating around willy-nilly πŸ€”πŸ’‘

πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ ICE's presence in schools is already a nightmare. Now they wanna check status of 3-4 yr olds? 🚫 Kids shouldn't be used as leverage. Protecting families is one thing, but this is just unnecessary stress. 😬

πŸ€” I'm not sure about this one... The city's gonna make childcare free for all kids, which sounds like a great idea, but what about the potential risks? Like, what if someone's a danger to society or something? 🚫 Can't they just ask parents about their immigration status before enrolling their kids in pre-K? It seems like a lot of red tape is being cut out without really thinking through the consequences. And what about the cost? I get that it could save families some cash, but where's the money coming from? πŸ€‘ Also, isn't this just setting a bad precedent for other cities to follow? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It feels like we're just throwing caution to the wind here... 😬

omg can u believe this? 🀯 they're making childcare free for all nyc kids!!! it's like, finally some good news for fams who are low-income or struggling to make ends meet. i mean, think about how much money we spend on after-school programs and summer camps... now we get to save that cash for actual college funds πŸ’ΈπŸŽ“

i'm glad the mayor is making a move to protect families too... it's crazy what's been going on with ICE and their immigration policies πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. i feel like this new policy is all about giving nyc kids a chance to thrive, regardless of where they're from or what their parents' status is πŸ‘ͺπŸ’•

🀯 This is like something outta "Mr. Robot" where they're fighting against the system & all that's cool! NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani is basically saying, "We don't care about your immigration status when it comes to our kids' education." And honestly, can you blame him? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Kids deserve access to quality education no matter what their parents' background is.

I'm loving this move by the mayor's administration. It's like they're saying, "We got your back, New York!" πŸ’― And it's not just about saving families money; it's about creating a safe and inclusive environment for all kids. I mean, who wouldn't want that? 😊 Kathy Hochul is doing her thing too by partnering with the mayor's team. This initiative feels like a win-win for everyone involved.

The part about ICE agents needing a judicial warrant to access schools & hospitals without getting harassed is low-key genius πŸ€“. I'm glad the mayor is standing up against those guys and making it clear that they won't be intimidated by their presence. It's time for our leaders to put people over policy, you feel? πŸ‘Š

I'm low-key loving this move by Zohran Mamdani lol 🀩. Like, can you imagine how many people are gonna be helped with free childcare? It's a game changer for families who are struggling to make ends meet. And it's about time we prioritize our kids' education over immigration status, you know? 😊 ICE agents trying to show up at schools uninvited is just wrong, so I'm down for this policy change πŸ™Œ. The fact that they can't even access these places without a judicial warrant is like, super reasonable, right? πŸ’―. It's all about keeping families safe and making sure everyone has an equal shot at the American dream πŸ’ͺ.

😊 This news about New York City's universal pre-K and 3-K programs is literally giving me LIFE πŸ’–! I mean, who wouldn't want free childcare for all? It's like a weight has been lifted off families' shoulders. I'm all about that diversity and inclusivity, and it's so heartwarming to see the mayor's administration taking steps towards making sure every child, regardless of their background, can access these amazing programs.

I love how the city is prioritizing kids' well-being over bureaucracy and red tape πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ. It just goes to show that we can make a real difference when we put people first, not politics or paperwork. And kudos to Kathy Hochul for partnering with the mayor on this initiative - it's all about collaboration and making our communities stronger! πŸ‘«πŸ’ͺ
