Manchester United handed Liverpool their fourth consecutive defeat as Harry Maguire's late goal sealed a 2-1 victory at Anfield. The win marked Manchester United's first success on Merseyside since 2016, and it came courtesy of a stunning header from the captain.

The Red Devils dominated the early stages, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring within two minutes after a swift counterattack. However, Liverpool equalised in the 78th minute when Cody Gakpo capitalized on a defensive error to level the scores. The Dutchman then rattled the woodwork twice more in the second half, but Manchester United's determination eventually paid off.

Gakpo should have sealed the draw for Liverpool with a headed opportunity, but instead, it was Maguire who rose above his markers to score the winning goal from Bruno Fernandes' cross. The goal sent Manchester United's players into raptures and ensured their first Premier League win at Anfield since 2016.

The victory marked back-to-back league wins for manager Ruben Amorim, and it eased pressure on him after a three-game losing streak. Liverpool, meanwhile, slumped to their first league defeat in over a year, with the defeat leaving them four points behind Arsenal at the top of the table.

The loss highlights Arne Slot's struggles to find the right balance between his team's defense and attack. Despite spending nearly $604m on new players in the transfer market, Liverpool's splurging has yielded little success, while their rivals are thriving under Amorim's leadership. The defeat also sparked controversy over a missed handball by Virgil van Dijk that went unpunished, with many arguing it should have been given.

As for Maguire, he admitted the win meant everything to him and his teammates. "It has been a long time coming to come to this ground and pick up three points," he said. "The old cliche is that it is only three points, but it definitely isn't – it means a lot more than that for the club, the boys, and the fans."

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk acknowledged the team's defensive woes, saying they need to stick together during this difficult period. "It is an interesting time because we have to stick together... We need to stay humble, stay working, and keep our confidence as high as possible."

Wow 🤯 Manchester United's win was a huge turnaround for them after their losing streak. The way they dominated the game was incredible. Interesting 🔥 how Liverpool are struggling with finding that balance between defense and attack despite spending so much on new players. It's gonna be interesting to see how this season unfolds now 🤔
