McIlroy thanks PGA chief for Ryder Cup apology and questions LIV changes

Rory McIlroy has expressed his gratitude towards PGA of America chief executive Derek Sprague for apologizing personally after Europe's Ryder Cup triumph at Bethpage Black, which was marred by the abuse directed at him and his wife.

The apology from Sprague came as a surprise to McIlroy, who received a heartfelt letter from the PGA chief, which he described as "lovely" and showed "he couldn't have been more gracious or apologetic". The email was all the more touching given that Erica, Rory's wife, had previously worked with Sprague at the PGA of America.

McIlroy himself did not take the abuse in stride, stating that while it might be seen as a compliment to be targeted by the rowdy crowd, it was "a tough week" for him and his teammates. However, he believes that the experience ultimately brought them closer together, galvanizing their resolve and leading to a narrow victory.

In contrast, USA captain Keegan Bradley declined to condemn the fans' behavior, describing it as "passionate". McIlroy credits the team's unity with helping to overcome the adversity.

Looking ahead to the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, McIlroy reflected on what he considers a career-defining campaign. The 10-month period has been filled with milestones and surprises, none more so than the Ryder Cup triumph.

McIlroy also weighed in on LIV Golf's decision to expand from three-hole events to 72 holes, starting next year. While the move is seen as an attempt to secure official world ranking points, McIlroy doubts that it will significantly benefit LIV players' standings. He believes that even with expanded events, LIV golfers may struggle to make a meaningful impact due to their relatively weak field strength.

McIlroy's take on the situation suggests that while the change may help LIV golfers get ranking points, it may not necessarily improve their standing in the world rankings.

awww thats so awesome that Derek Sprague apologized to Rory and his wife πŸ™, its really cool to see someone taking responsibility for the fans' behavior πŸ’• rory's reaction about the whole experience being a "tough week" but actually bringing him closer to his teammates is super inspiring πŸ’ͺ he's just so humble and gracious about it all 😊

omg I feel Rory Mcilroy has been super gracious about the whole thing πŸ™...i mean the abuse he and his wife Erica got at the Ryder Cup was totally unacceptable 🀬 but its great to see him take it on the chin and come out stronger 🌟 Derek Sprague's apology is so cool, like a big ol' hug for Rory and everyone involved 😊 I'm loving how Keegan Bradley avoided taking sides tho πŸ€”...I think that just added fuel to the fire lol. LIV golf expanding their events from 3-hole to 72 holes next year? idk about this one πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ...if they're really trying to get more ranking points then its a good move, but i still think it'll be tough for them to compete with the big boys like Rory and the DP Tour Championship crew πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” gotta feel bad for rory & his wife though, those fans can be pretty rough πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. glad to see him taking it all in stride tho, doesn't seem like he's holding any grudges πŸ™. on a different note, lvi golf's expansion plan is kinda interesting... i mean, securing ranking points is def a plus but if their events still ain't stacked with top talent, how much of an impact will it really make? πŸ€” might be more drama than anything else tbh πŸ˜’

I think the PGA of America should've apologized more... like, publicly. A heartfelt letter is nice, but I'm sure many people felt that just wasn't enough after what was said. And McIlroy's team taking it as a way to bring them closer together? That sounds like an excuse to me. Some fans are passionate and others aren't, you know? It's not all about passion when there's hurtful stuff being shouted. LIV Golf expanding its events is probably just a PR move, though...

omg u guys i just saw this article about rory mcilroy and i'm literally so happy for him 🀩 he's still reeling from the ryan cup win but at least Derek sprague apologized to him and his wife erica personally which is so sweet 😊 i mean can u imagine getting a heartfelt letter from someone who knows ur wife lol Erica was even part of the team at pga america back in the day, talk about a small world 🌎 anyway back to rory... he's saying that the abuse they took from the crowd actually brought them closer together as a team πŸ’• and now he's looking forward to the dp world tour championship πŸ† gotta say i'm curious to see what happens with lvi golf's new format, seems like it could make a difference but idk if its gonna give em players any real ranking points πŸ€”

OMG, Derek Sprague is literally the ultimate nice guy πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ! I mean, who expects an apology from a celeb just because they got roasted? Like, what's next? Apologies for being good at golf too? πŸ˜’ Anyway, I guess it's great that he acknowledged Erica's contribution to the PGA of America and all that jazz. But let's be real, McIlroy is still going to win everything in sight. It's not like LIV Golf has a chance against the real deal πŸ’ͺ... unless they can actually get their act together and field some decent competition. And yeah, Keegan Bradley's "passionate" excuse for the fans' behavior? πŸ™„

man I'm so hyped for Rory McIlroy right now!!! 🀩 he's such a class act, I love how gracious he is even when faced with all that negativity at the Ryder Cup πŸ˜”. and yeah I can see how being targeted by fans would bring your team closer together - it's like, you've got to stand united against the hate πŸ’ͺ. but I gotta say, I'm still salty about LIV Golf trying to poach our top pros πŸ€‘. Rory's right that their field strength is weak - can't they just stick to what works? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ anyway, onto the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai - anyone got a sweet fantasy football pick for me? 🎲

🀣 so Rory's all like "aww thanks for apologizing Derek, that was super classy of you" πŸ™ƒ but let's be real, if he didn't get a personal email from Sprague, he probably would've been too busy getting roasted by fans to even care about the Ryder Cup. And now McIlroy's over here giving credit to the team for coming together despite the chaos... like, we get it, you guys worked hard and won πŸ† but don't pretend like it was all rainbows and unicorns at Bethpage Black.

Just seen this news about Rory Mcilroy and I gotta say, I'm kinda relieved he got an apology from Derek Sprague πŸ™...I mean, can you imagine if that was your wife on the receiving end of all that abuse? 😱 And to be honest, I don't think anyone would've blamed him for being a bit salty about it. But at least the team came together and stuff worked out in the end πŸ’ͺ...and now he's gonna have an epic season-ending campaign in Dubai πŸ†. As for LIV Golf expanding their events, idk man...I feel like they're just trying to get some legit ranking points and make themselves look cooler πŸ”₯, but it's hard to see how that's actually gonna make a difference for the players. Still, I guess only time will tell πŸ’”

I'm still trying to wrap my head around Derek Sprague's apology πŸ€”... I mean, what's the protocol here? Is this just a PR stunt or did he genuinely reach out to Rory and his wife after hearing about the abuse they faced? The PGA of America should've been more proactive in addressing the issue from the start. And now that McIlroy is praising Sprague for being gracious, it feels like a bit of an afterthought πŸ™„... where's the accountability on the part of the fans who started this mess?

man i feel bad for rory and his wife erica πŸ€• they got roasted at the ryder cup but you know what they said now? tht experience brought dem closer together like a real couple πŸ’• and btw keegan bradley dodged de bullet by not condemnin' de fans 😎 but seriously mcilroy's take on liv golf is spot on imo πŸ€‘ dey think expandin' to 72 holes gonna make a difference? lol no way fam, dem still gonna struggle with dat weak field πŸ€ͺ

omg i was literally livin my best life watchin rory mcllroy crush it at ryder cup πŸŒοΈβ€β™‚οΈπŸ’₯ and now he's talkin about how the hate towards him and erica got them closer as a team πŸ’•πŸ‘« that's so beautiful to me, i mean who needs negativity when you've got a hubby and teammates who've got your back? πŸ˜‚ and btw i'm low-key invested in rory's opinion on liv golf πŸ€” like what if they do expand it to 72 holes but the field strength is still weak? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ that'd be so refreshing not having to watch another richie-rich try to buy their way to the top πŸ’Έ

I'm shocked by how rough things got at the Ryder Cup 🀯! I mean, I've seen some crazy crowds in my day, but this was on a whole other level 😱. It's good to see Rory McIlroy and his team came out stronger from it πŸ’ͺ. And kudos to Derek Sprague for apologizing personally - that takes guts πŸ’•. As for LIV Golf expanding their events, I don't know if they'll really make a dent in the world rankings πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Those guys just can't seem to compete with the big boys... yet 😜

I'm still reeling from the Ryder Cup drama 😩. I feel so bad for Rory and his wife Erica, dealing with all that abuse 🀒. But at the same time, I love how strong they stood together as a team πŸ’•. And can we talk about Derek Sprague's apology? Like, totally unexpected and super classy πŸ™. I'm glad he reached out personally to apologize for the fans' behavior.

And now, LIV Golf is making some changes πŸ“... yeah, it'll be interesting to see how this plays out. I don't think expanding to 72 holes will automatically make them a top-tier tour πŸ’―. The field strength just isn't there yet. But hey, more points are always good, right? 😊

I'm also super stoked for Rory's season-ending event in Dubai πŸ–οΈ! He's having an incredible year and deserves all the love ❀️. Can't wait to see what he does next πŸ’₯.

just saw this and gotta say, glad to see Rory getting an apology from PGA chief Derek Sprague πŸ™, but can't help feeling kinda weird about Keegan Bradley's stance on the fans' behavior... "passionate" just seems like a weak way to justify all that abuse πŸ˜’.

πŸ€” I feel bad for Rory McIlroy and his wife Erica, they must've felt so uncomfortable with all those nasty comments. πŸ˜’ But at least Derek Sprague apologized personally which showed he cares about the players. πŸ™ The Ryder Cup was such an intense week, it's a wonder they didn't give up. πŸ’ͺ It's nice to see Rory and his team came out on top though! πŸ† And now LIV Golf is trying to expand their events, but honestly, I don't think it'll make a huge difference for them. The field just isn't as strong as the rest of the tour. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

man this rory mcilroy guy is like a total legend 🀩, i mean i remember when he won us open back in 2014 and now he's leading europe to victory at the ryder cup πŸ‡«πŸ‡·, it's crazy how far he's come, but you know who gets a gold star for being classy? derek sprague, the pga of america chief exec, i mean i wasn't around back when he was working with rory's wife erica, but it's cool to see him apologize personally after everything that went down, and now they're just like old pals, that's what i call a win πŸŽ‰.

It's refreshing to see Derek Sprague extending an olive branch to Rory McIlroy 🌱, especially given Erica's background with him at the PGA of America. The personal apology shows that even in the high-pressure environment of professional golf, empathy and class can prevail.

However, one has to wonder about Keegan Bradley's ambivalence towards the abuse directed at McIlroy and his team 😐. As captain, he should be setting a positive tone for his players, but instead, he downplays the behavior as "passionate". It's not necessarily about condemning the fans, but also acknowledging the unacceptable nature of verbal abuse.

The LIV Golf expansion from three-hole to 72-hole events is an interesting development πŸ’Ό. While it may help them secure ranking points, McIlroy's doubts are well-founded – their field strength just isn't on par with the rest of the tour. The question remains: will this change be enough to bridge the gap and make LIV players more competitive?

πŸ€” just saw that Rory Mcilroy was really hurt by all those abuse comments at the Ryder Cup πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ and now he's saying its actually brought him closer to his teammates 😊 its like they were all in this together, united against the hate πŸ’ͺ but i still dont think lfgolf is gonna make a difference with their new 72hole events πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ might just be more of a marketing ploy for them πŸ€‘
