At least 46 people have lost their lives in a devastating multi-vehicle crash on Uganda's major Kampala-Gulu Highway. The incident occurred early yesterday morning when two buses heading in opposite directions tried to overtake other vehicles, resulting in a massive collision that sent several cars and trucks tumbling to the ground.
According to eyewitnesses, one of the buses swerved to avoid a potential head-on crash with an oncoming vehicle but instead caused a "head-on and side collision" which triggered a chain reaction of accidents. The resulting mayhem left dozens dead and many more injured, with several others trapped in wreckage.
Uganda's police force initially reported 63 fatalities, but later revised the number downward to 46 after realizing they had mistakenly included some of the victims who were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at local hospitals. A total of 60 people are currently being held by authorities as they await further questioning about their roles in the accident.
Meanwhile, President Yoweri Museveni has expressed his sadness over the loss of life and urged caution to prevent such tragedies in the future. He announced plans to provide financial assistance to bereaved families and those injured in the crash, although details have yet to be released.
The Kampala-Gulu Highway is one of Uganda's busiest routes, with thousands passing through it daily. Authorities are now warning motorists about the dangers of reckless overtaking and urging them to exercise extreme caution while driving.
A full-scale investigation into the cause of the tragedy has been launched by the police force, and officials have vowed to get to the bottom of what led to this devastating accident.

I'm not saying they didn't deserve it or anything, but like, come on! You're going 60+ mph in a two-lane highway and trying to overtake people? It's just asking for trouble. And what's with the police force initially reporting 63 fatalities? Are they even doing their job?

I mean, that's just a lot of lives lost because some drivers can't be bothered to follow basic road safety rules.

I'm still trying to process how something like this can happen on a major highway with so many lives lost. It's just heartbreaking thinking about all those families who are going through this tragedy.

The government's response seems decent, but we should be pushing for more concrete measures to prevent such accidents in the future. Have you ever driven on that highway? It's crazy how reckless overtaking can turn into a disaster like this... we need stricter traffic laws and better enforcement!

I'm sure the 60 people being held for questioning are all going to get off scot-free. And of course, the government is already planning to provide "financial assistance" - how convenient. Meanwhile, the public is still expected to just be more careful and responsible behind the wheel? Come on, it's not like this was an isolated incident... it happens everywhere, all the time. The investigation will probably find out some boring stuff about speed limits or whatever, but let's be real, we all know what really causes these kinds of accidents: human error.

Anyone who thought that was a good idea needs to rethink their driving skills ASAP! And 60 people being held for questioning? That's just crazy. I hope they get to the bottom of this and make sure no one else suffers the same fate

it's just insane that 2 buses tried to overtake each other and it ended up with so many people dying

. I think it's really good that President Museveni is taking this seriously and promising support for those who need it, but at the same time, we need to acknowledge that this kind of accident was preventable
