Opinion | There will never be another Misty Copeland

Misty Copeland's retirement marks the end of an era for American Ballet Theatre, where she spent nearly two decades as a principal dancer and trailblazer for diversity. For Copeland, ballet was more than just a profession - it was a transformative experience that allowed her to embody the beauty and elegance she had always admired in others.

Growing up, Copeland herself struggled with self-doubt when she saw how difficult it was for other young girls of color to find their place on stage. But as she grew older and developed into one of the most celebrated ballerinas of her generation, she became determined to break down those barriers and pave a path for others.

Despite facing numerous challenges along the way - from being told that her size made her unsuitable for ballet to suffering through decades of physical pain due to injuries sustained while dancing - Copeland persevered. Her journey was marked by moments of quiet courage, as when she finally returned to the stage after years away, only to deliver a breathtaking performance.

Copeland's last dance on Wednesday night was more than just a farewell - it was an act of defiance and gratitude. For the young girl who had once been told that ballet wasn't for her because of her skin color, Copeland now stood as a shining example of what it means to be strong, determined, and unapologetically oneself.

As she took the stage alongside Calvin Royal III in the balcony pas de deux from Romeo and Juliet, the weight of symbolism was palpable. This was more than just a dance - it was a moment that gifted the audience with a rare opportunity to witness two Black people perform a famous ballet on such a major stage.

For Copeland, there will be others who follow in her footsteps and achieve greatness. But there will never again be another Misty Copeland, whose unwavering spirit and unrelenting passion inspired generations of dancers to come.

man πŸ€— she's an absolute icon! it's crazy to think that just a few years ago we were all still talking about her trailblazing story and now she's hanging up her pointe shoes... that last dance was truly something special, you could feel the history & emotion πŸ’– it's amazing how one person can leave such a lasting impact on an entire industry. I'm so grateful to have witnessed her journey & I know there will be others who follow in her footsteps but she'll always hold a special place in my heart πŸ™

I'm still trying to process the emotional weight of this moment... Misty Copeland's retirement is a reminder that progress is often incremental & that breaking barriers takes time. I wish there were more women like her who could carry on her legacy, but also I believe it's our responsibility to keep pushing for inclusivity in all areas of life 🌟

I'm literally getting chills thinking about Misty's final performance 🀩. It's not just a retirement, it's the end of an era for American Ballet Theatre. I mean, can you even imagine if she wasn't there to pave the way for diversity and inclusivity in ballet? We'd be stuck in this same old world where black people aren't represented on stage. But Misty broke down those barriers and now we get to see more Black faces on the big stage 🌟. I love how she's not just leaving behind a legacy, but also inspiring a whole new generation of dancers who are gonna carry her torch πŸ”₯. The weight of symbolism was definitely there tonight and it gave me all the feels πŸ’.

πŸ™Œ I think it's crazy how people assume that because you're not a 'traditional' dancer, you can't do ballet πŸ€”. Misty Copeland is proof that with hard work and dedication, anyone can achieve their dreams πŸ’ͺ. It's also inspiring to see her use her platform to empower others and break down barriers for diversity in the arts πŸ’•. I mean, sure some people might say she's being 'proud' of her identity or something, but honestly it's just about being confident in who you are and rocking that confidence on stage 😎. She's definitely a role model for anyone who's ever felt like they don't quite fit the mold πŸ‘―β€β™€οΈ. Can't wait to see what the future holds for other talented dancers who follow in her footsteps πŸ’ƒ!

πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘ Can you believe it's really over for this talented lady? I mean, we knew she was getting up there in years, but it still feels like a big loss πŸ€•. The thing is though, Misty Copeland hasn't just retired from dancing, she's left behind an entire legacy of inspiring others to chase their dreams πŸ’«, no matter how impossible they may seem. I'm literally in awe of her strength and determination πŸ’ͺ - that girl was told she wasn't good enough more times than I can count, but she never gave up πŸ™Œ. And now we get to watch a whole new generation of dancers follow in her footsteps, so that's pretty amazing πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘. Long live the queen! πŸ‘Έ
