Opinion: Why is ‘60 Minutes’ amplifying the views of Marjorie Taylor Greene? | CNN

CBS's recent decision to feature Marjorie Taylor Greene on their show "60 Minutes" has sparked outrage among many who believe the network is unfairly amplifying her extreme and conspiracy-driven views.

Unlike previous episodes featuring so-called "controversial" guests, including Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh and Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the segment with Greene stands out due to its timing - she was elected just two years ago and had repeatedly pushed conspiracy theories about school shootings, gun violence, and even a supposed "Jewish space laser" causing wildfires.

Critics point out that CBS, like some other media outlets, often have business interests at play which might lead them to prioritize ratings over responsible reporting. In the past, there was criticism surrounding then-CBS CEO Les Moonves' public remarks during Trump's 2016 presidential campaign when he openly stated his support for the candidate.

The timing of Greene’s interview and her own recent tweets suggest that CBS is using its platform to boost her profile and visibility while downplaying or failing to mention some of her most extreme views, such as attending a white nationalist event last year. It remains to be seen whether the segment provides a balanced portrayal of Greene's views and opinions.

I'm low-key shocked by this decision 🤯. Marjorie Taylor Greene is just not someone I'd want on my TV screen, you know? The timing of it all seems pretty fishy – just two years in office and she's already getting a major platform. I get that CBS wants to reach their audience, but can't they see how this might be seen as enabling her kinda crazy views? 🤔 I'm worried about the message it sends to people who might be influenced by her rhetoric. Did they really consider how this segment would play out in the public eye? It's all about ratings and clicks for them now, sadly 💸.

I don’t usually comment but I have to say, this whole situation with Marjorie Taylor Greene and CBS is just wild 🤯. Like, I get that they're trying to make some money and boost her profile but come on, can't they do better than that? 🤑 It's like they're playing a game of "let's give her attention" while ignoring all the crazy stuff she's been spouting about schools and guns... and what was with that Jewish space laser thing? 😂 Like, I don't know if people realize how out there some of this is. And now I'm wondering if they'll even touch on the white nationalist event she went to last year... will they just gloss over it or what? 🤔

omg u gotta wonder what's goin on here... cbs is basically doin a free promo for greene's next book or somethin lol, but seriously, can't they see how crazy her views are?? i mean, she thinks there's a jewish space laser causin wildfires? come on! and dont even get me started on them tweets from last year... how can cbs just gloss over that stuff?! its like they're tryna make her out to be some kinda hero or somethin. newsflash: we cant have more of this kind of extremist talk goin on in our media outlets, it's time 4 a change

I don't get why CBS is giving Marjorie Taylor Greene so much airtime 🤔. I mean, she's been spouting some pretty crazy stuff about schools and gun violence, and now they're giving her a big platform on 60 Minutes? It feels like they want to boost her profile or something 👀. And what's with the timing - just when she was elected, too? 🤷‍♂️ It seems kinda suspicious that they're not really fact-checking her views or anything. Can't they just give a balanced report without giving her so much attention? 😐

I'm getting really worried about what's going on with our media lately 🙅‍♂️. I mean, remember when we used to watch shows like "60 Minutes" and they'd actually make you think? Nowadays it feels like they're just throwing controversy at the wall and seeing what sticks 😳. And featuring Marjorie Taylor Greene on their show? It's just crazy. She's been spewing all this wild conspiracy stuff for years, but now she's getting a platform to spread her views even further 📺. I'm not sure if CBS is trying to boost her profile or what, but it doesn't feel right. And what about the business interests thing? It feels like they're more interested in making money than in reporting the truth 🤑. I guess only time will tell if this segment is gonna be a balanced look at Greene's views...

I'm totally split on this one 🤔💡. On one hand, it's great that CBS is giving Marjorie Taylor Greene a platform - she's definitely not someone you'd normally invite onto a major show. But at the same time, I get why people are outraged. The timing of the segment feels super calculated to boost her profile and visibility right before an election 🤝💸. Like, can't they just report on her views without trying to make her sound like a total rockstar? 🎸

It's also worth considering that the network has some pretty deep pockets 🤑 - they're not exactly worried about being accused of perpetuating conspiracy theories themselves 😏. And let's be real, who needs more white nationalist events in our lives? 🚫💔 It's time for media outlets to take responsibility for the content they air and make sure it's not just clickbait or ratings-driven nonsense 📰😡.

The one thing that would really put this all into perspective is if we could see some actual accountability from CBS - like, a statement acknowledging some of Greene's more extreme views and how they plan to address them in the segment 🤷‍♀️. Until then, I'm gonna be over here watching from the sidelines with my popcorn 🍿👀

omg the formatting of that article is totally off 🤦‍♀️ i mean idk what kind of design team cbs has but those headlines are all over the place 📰👀 shouldn't they be trying to create some kinda visual flow or hierarchy? like it's hard to read and digest information when everything looks like it was thrown together randomly 🤯 as for the topic itself, i think it's super valid that people are questioning why cbs is giving marjorie taylor greene a platform. yeah let's focus on actual balanced reporting rather than just boosting her profile 💁‍♀️

I don't get why they gotta give her so much airtime 🤔... I mean, sure, it's not like she's gonna change anyone's mind or anything 😒. But c'mon, 2 years into the job and CBS is already playing with fire? It's all about ratings, folks! 📺 They're trying to boost her profile so she can run for office and maybe even get a Senate seat... not exactly the kind of journalism I'd call balanced, if you ask me. And what's up with all these people who keep talking about business interests? Can't we just talk about the issue at hand without it being about the Benjamins? 💸

I'm kinda surprised by all the backlash 🤔... I think CBS is just trying to keep it real, you know? Marjorie Taylor Greene is a prominent figure in American politics now, and they wanna showcase her perspective on their show. It's not like they're giving her a free pass or anything 🙅‍♂️. But at the same time, I get why some people might think she's got some... unusual views 😕. I mean, who hasn't gotten criticized for saying something a little out of the ordinary? I'm all about free speech and having diverse opinions on TV shows 💬. Maybe CBS can use this opportunity to spark some interesting conversations 🤔?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one... I mean, come on, 60 Minutes is like, supposed to be a reputable news show 🙄. They're putting someone with those views on national TV? It just doesn't add up to me. They should be focusing on serious issues that affect the country, not peddling conspiracy theories and hate speech. And what's up with CBS trying to boost her profile at this exact moment? It feels like they're trying to create a controversy where none exists 😒. I'm all for free speech and all that, but when it comes down to it, there's a difference between expressing your opinions and spreading misinformation and hate.

idk how cbs couldve done better, i mean they did feature her after all. but i do think its sus that she was on 60 mins just 2 yrs ago, cant say im surprised tho. theres been ppl talkin bout conspiracy theories bein way more popular than u'd think. and some ppl got mad cuz they felt like cbs was playin both sides or somethin 🤔

I'm all for having tough conversations on TV, but this one feels really off to me 🤔. I mean, have you seen some of Marjorie Taylor Greene's tweets? She's all about QAnon vibes and anti-vaxxer stuff... it's like, not cool, CBS. And yeah, the timing is super suspicious - they're basically giving her a free pass to spread her conspiracy theories even further. I get that she's young and new to politics, but doesn't that mean she should be held to a higher standard? 🤷‍♀️

And let's not forget all the other times CBS has featured "controversial" guests... what's the point of having these shows if it's just to give more airtime to people with radical views? Can't they, like, actually scrutinize her on some level and show some accountability for the way they're handling this interview? I'm keeping an eye on this one, guys 📺
