Pelicans oust Willie Green after slow start in season’s first NBA coaching shakeup

New Orleans Pelicans Axe Coach Willie Green After Slow Start to Season

Just 12 games into the NBA season, the New Orleans Pelicans have made a significant coaching change. Willie Green, the team's head coach since 2021, has been let go after struggling to find his footing with the squad.

The Pelicans are currently mired in a six-game losing skid and sit at 2-10 on the season, making them one of the worst teams so far. The lackluster performance can be attributed to several factors, including the absence of key player Zion Williamson due to hamstring issues. Williamson has dealt with hamstring problems for each of the past four seasons and is now averaging 22.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game this season.

Another factor contributing to Green's departure is the team's porous defense, which has allowed opponents to score over 101 points in every game. The Pelicans' offense has also struggled to find consistency, making it difficult for Green to get the most out of his players.

assistant coach James Borrego will take over as interim head coach, marking a change of pace from Green's tenure. Borrego was rumored to be interested in coaching jobs during the 2024 offseason but ultimately chose to remain with the Pelicans.

Green's time at the helm ended with a 150-190 record in nearly five seasons, which isn't an impressive mark by NBA standards. The decision to let him go is seen as a bold move by the team's front office, led by executive vice president Joe Dumars, who released a statement praising Green for his contributions but ultimately making the call to make a change.

With Dejounte Murray still recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, the Pelicans are in desperate need of a turnaround. Can Borrego's coaching acumen help steer the team back on track and build some momentum before the midpoint of the season?

🤔 I feel bad for Willie Green, he got a raw deal. 150-190 record ain't nothing to brag about but still, 5 years is a long time. They gotta give him more time or at least some support. Zion's injury is a major factor and it's on the coaching staff to figure out how to make the most of our best player despite his hamstring issues 🤷‍♂️

The defense has been a joke, I mean who lets 101 points up? That's just not acceptable. But at least they're making a change now. Borrego might be the right guy to turn it around, but we'll see about that 😬. The team needs some momentum and I hope he can bring that. It's time for some wins 🏆

You know I was thinking about Willie Green's situation... he just can't catch a break with Zion's hamstring issues 🤕 and that defense is like, totally falling apart 😩. And 150-190 record in five years, that's not too shabby but it's definitely not great either 🤔. Now I'm wondering if Borrego has the magic touch to turn things around... he was a good assistant coach, so maybe his experience will pay off for this team 👍. One thing's for sure, they gotta get some momentum going before Dejounte comes back from that Achilles injury 💪

I gotta say, 12 games into the season already making changes is pretty common nowadays 🤔. I mean, who needs to find their footing when you can just switch it up? But seriously, Willie Green's exit might not be a huge surprise given how poorly the Pelicans have played so far. Defense has always been a problem for them and now they're paying the price 🚨.

The fact that Borrego was already rumored to be interested in coaching jobs makes you wonder if he was just waiting for an opportunity like this 😒. The question is, can he turn things around quickly? The Pelicans need to get Dejounte Murray back healthy ASAP and start winning some games before they fall too far behind the pack 🏃‍♂️.

It's gonna be tough for Borrego to turn it all around with a 6-game losing skid and all, but you never know what's gonna happen in the NBA. Maybe he'll make some savvy moves, or maybe the team will just start playing bad again 😒 either way, it's gonna be an interesting ride 👀

😬 I gotta say, 12 games into the season already axing Willie Green is a pretty big move. I mean, you'd think they'd want to give him more time to figure things out, especially with Zion not playing half the season 🤕. The defense has been a mess and that's gotta be on everyone's plate... but come on, 101+ points against every game? 🙅‍♂️ That's just too many! Borrego's gonna have his work cut out for him, no doubt about it 💪. I'm curious to see how the team responds to the change and if they can turn it around before it's too late ⏰...

Man I'm shocked 😲! 12 games into the season already? That's crazy talk! The Pelicans are struggling big time 🤕, it's no wonder they made a change. I mean, Zion Williamson is still injured 🤦‍♂️, that's huge, and their defense has been gettin' torched 🔥 every game. Poor Willie Green, he deserved better 🙏. James Borrego's a solid coach, hopefully he can turn it around ⚡️. But man, 2-10? That's just brutal 😓. Time to step up their game or they'll be in the tank 💔.

🤔 I'm kinda feelin' sorry for Willie Green, dude. He was given 5 seasons to get this team turned around and now he's just another coach who got axed. 150-190 record in 5 years? Not bad, not bad at all. The Pelicans should be grateful they didn't fire him sooner. It's like they were hoping for a magic solution that would make all their problems disappear. Newsflash: there ain't no magic cure. And let's be real, the dude had some awesome moments too. Remember when Zion was on fire and Green had him running wild? That was straight fire 🔥

I feel bad for Willie Green 😔 he got a raw deal, 12 games into the season is not enough to turn things around 🤯 and Zion's absence is a huge blow 💪. I think they should've given him more time to get his system going 🔄, maybe another month or two ⏰. Borrego's gonna have to work magic ✨ with this squad, Dejounte still out and all the drama surrounding Murray's injury... it's a tough hill to climb 🏔️. Maybe they should've made some moves in the offseason to shore up that defense 🔒? Anyway, I'm rooting for Borrego to prove me wrong 😅

I'm totally fine with Willie Green getting axed 😂👍 his numbers aren't that bad considering he had to deal with Zion being out for like, half the season. 150-190 is actually pretty respectable 🤔 I mean, who's gonna win it all anyway? It's not like the Pelicans were expected to make a deep run in the playoffs or anything. And let's be real, Borrego has been quietly doing his thing as an assistant coach, waiting for his chance to shine 👀 so maybe this is just a promotion in disguise 🤷‍♂️

man... coach green was always a bit of a wild card, you know? he had this infectious energy that got the squad hyped, but at the same time, he struggled to balance all the pieces. it's like trying to solve a jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces 🤯. and now, with zion out again, it's like, what's the point of even trying? 🤷‍♂️ i mean, can't really pin everything on coach green, but at the same time, he did have some tough decisions to make.

i feel bad for him, though. 150-190 record is no joke 💔. and it's not like he was given a lot of resources or support from the front office. they're putting all their eggs in borrego now, hoping he can whip the team into shape 🔥. but what if that doesn't work out? what then? 🤔

🤔 Coach Green got the axe too early for me... should've given him more time to figure things out with all the injuries they're dealing with 🤕. New GMs are always hyping up their 'bold moves' but this feels like a knee-jerk reaction 💔. Borrego's been there, done that; can he bring some stability? 👀

🤔 Coach Green's axe was long overdue 🚫. 150-190 record is a joke 📉. Pelicans needed a shake-up, now they gotta get Zion right 💪. Borrego's in 👊 good hands, hope he can fix this mess 💼.

OMG, I'm kinda surprised they let Willie Green go so soon 🤔... I mean, 2-10 is crazy, but at least he tried to adjust to the injuries 🤕. Borrego's a good dude tho, been with the team since 2021 too 👍. I got faith in him, maybe they needed a shake-up 🔄. The defense has gotta step it up, we can't be getting torched every game 😳... fingers crossed for Dejounte to get back healthy soon 💪!
