Queen Elizabeth II: Coin portrait of late monarch criticised in Australia

A Coin Portrait of a Queen That's Lost Its Shine: Critics Weigh In on Australia's New Commemorative Coins.

The Royal Australian Mint has released two commemorative coins in honor of the late Queen Elizabeth II, but many Australians are saying they don't look much like her. The $5 (£2.56) and 50 cent silver coins were created to mark the queen's centenary, but critics claim that the portrait on the coins bears little resemblance to the monarch.

While some people have taken issue with the design, others have praised it as a beautiful tribute to the late queen. The Royal Australian Mint defended the portrait, stating that "our coin images don't always capture the full beauty of a design once it's etched in metal."

Despite the criticism, collectors have reported that the ballot for the coins was fully subscribed, and many are eager to get their hands on one of the limited edition coins. The mint created 30,000 of the 50c coins and 5,000 of the $5 coins, all of which are considered collector's items and won't enter general public circulation.

The design features a range of motifs and symbols that reflect Queen Elizabeth II's life and legacy, including her love of horses, corgis, art, theatre, and flowers. The golden wattle, Australia's national floral emblem, is also represented on the coins.

On social media, some people have joked about how much the portrait resembles a certain fictional character from the movie Mrs Doubtfire, played by Robin Williams. While others have praised the design as "awesome" and "beautiful".

As Australia moves forward with its commemoration of Queen Elizabeth II's life and legacy, it will be interesting to see how the public reacts to these coins in the coming months. For now, it seems that opinions on the portrait are sharply divided – but everyone can agree that the queen deserves recognition in a special way.

I'm not sure what I think about these new coins 🤔... Some people are totally loving the design and others are like "um, is that really Queen Liz?" 😂 It's funny how one person sees her iconic face but another doesn't even recognize it 👀. The fact that collectors are going wild for them though makes me a bit jealous lol... I wish I had a few spare coins just to collect dust on my shelf 🤑 But overall, I think it's cool that they're honoring Queen Elizabeth II in such a unique way 💕

omg u no i just got back from australia 🤗 and i was thinking wut's up w/ those coins? like i thought they were gonna be really pretty but now i'm not so sure 🤑 they do look kinda weird tho. did they even ask anyone 4 opinions on the design before it came out? 🤔 like seriously what if ppl don't like them? 🤑 can u imagine if australia just made a bunch more or something and everyone was like "meh"? 🙄 anywayz, i guess its cool that collectors are excited about them 🎉

omg i just saw those new coins from australia 🙌 and honestly i'm kinda confused about them... like who is that? 😂 they say it's the queen elizabeth ii but she looks nothing like her in real life lol👀 maybe its just me but its a bit too cartoonish for my liking. anyone else feel this way? 👎

I gotta say 🤔, I'm loving the design on those commemorative coins... or at least some people are 😂. I mean, who wouldn't want a coin with the golden wattle on it? But for me, the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II looks like someone took a selfie and then decided to add a crown 💁‍♀️. I get what the Royal Australian Mint was going for, but I think they might've stretched it a bit too far... or maybe I'm just not seeing the beauty in it 🤷‍♂️. What's crazy is that collectors are already going wild for these coins, and some people are even comparing the portrait to Mrs Doubtfire 😂. I guess when you're collecting rare stuff, you take your art with a grain of salt... or in this case, a whole lot of shine 💎.

🤔 The design of the commemorative coins is defo a bit wonky. I mean, I can see why some people would think it doesn't look like Queen Liz II's face... I made a quick sketch of what I imagine she might have looked like on the coin 💅🏻👑

Compared to the actual portrait, it looks more like a younger version of her face 🤷‍♀️. But hey, art is subjective and all that jazz. Some people might think it's beautiful 😊.

The fact that collectors are lining up for these coins is pretty cool though! 30k of each coin were made, so I guess they're not going to be easily available 😅.

the design is kinda meh, i mean, you'd expect more from the royal mint tbh 🤑 their explanation about how coins look different in metal doesn't really cut it, and yeah, those who like it are just gonna say that because they're collectors lol 💸

I mean, I get why some ppl would think the coin portraits don't look much like the real Queen Elizabeth II, but i kinda disagree 🤔. The Royal Australian Mint did an amazing job with the design, incorporating all these different motifs and symbols that showcase her interests and legacy 💖. I love how they included the golden wattle, btw - it's such a beautiful touch 🌼. And yeah, maybe some ppl will say it looks like Mrs Doubtfire 😂, but that's just not fair! The design is stunning and i can see why collectors are so stoked to get their hands on one 💸. It's all about appreciating the little details, you know? 🙏

I mean, come on! The coin design is supposed to be a tribute to the queen, and some people are saying it looks nothing like her? 🤔 I get that not everyone will love art, but 30k coins sold already? That's a lot of people wanting to own something so... questionable. 😂 And the mint's excuse about the design not looking great in metal? That's just a cop-out. The portraits on those coins are basically just weird mashups of random stuff from the queen's life - love of horses, corgis, art... it's like they threw everything at the wall and hoped some of it would stick. 🤷‍♂️

OMG 🤯 have you seen these new Aussie commemorative coins? I'm telling ya, something fishy is goin' on here... like, why did they change the Queen's face so much?! It's like they're tryin' to obscure somethin'. And don't even get me started on that golden wattle – it looks like a fancy symbol or somethin', what's up with that? 🤔 The Royal Aussie Mint is actin' all vague about the design, but I know what I saw... it's like they're hidin' something. And those collectors who are so hyped about gettin' their hands on these coins? They must be in on it too, right? 😉

I gotta say, these new coin portraits of Queen Elizabeth II are pretty meh, tbh 🤔💸 I mean, I get that they're trying to do something unique and all that jazz, but a few people have pointed out that the design kinda bears no resemblance to the queen herself 😐. Like, I know the Royal Australian Mint said it's all about capturing her essence in metal, but honestly, it just looks like...not much 👀. On the other hand, some folks are totally loving the design and I'm like, cool, I guess 🤷‍♀️. But for me, it's a solid 3/10 when it comes to layout-wise - I mean, where's the clear hierarchy of information? How about some more negative space? The coins just look kinda cluttered 📝👎. Anyway, collectors are already snapping up these limited edition coins like they're hot cakes 🍞🔥!

I dunno about this one... I mean, I get why some ppl might think the coin design doesn't look like the queen at all, but I think it's actually kinda cool? I love how they incorporated so many symbols and motifs that reflect her interests and passions - it's like a little window into her personality 🤗. And honestly, I think it's awesome that people are having such strong opinions about it - it means the coins are gonna be super collectible! Plus, it's not like anyone's complaining about the queen getting recognized in a special way... that's gotta count for something 😊.

I mean, come on, those coin portraits look like they were drawn by a kindergartener having a temper tantrum 🤣. I get it, not every design needs to be perfect, but this one's got some major misfires going on. I mean, where's the resemblance to Queen Liz II? Some people are saying she looks more like Mrs Doubtfire (I guess that's one way to immortalize her) than a real-life queen 👑🤣. But hey, collectors are gonna love 'em no matter what, and that's cool, right? The mint's just happy they sold out the coins, so let's just say it's all good 🤑💰.

I dont get why ppl r so mad about the coin design 🤔 they clearly did their research into the queens interests and put alot of thought into it, its not like its meant to be a perfect replica 😂 my kid loves art and theatre just like the queen, but I can see how some ppl might think its a bit dodgy 👀 maybe its all about perspective? anyway i love that they made so many collector's edition coins tho, its gonna be fun trying to find one 🤑

🤑 I think the design is actually pretty cool, I mean, who needs an exact replica of the Queen's face when you're paying tribute to her legacy? The addition of all those motifs and symbols is what makes it so unique and interesting 🤔💎 And yeah, I can see why some people might not immediately recognize the Queen in the portrait... but that's kinda the point, right? It's a representation, not a exact likeness 😊

omg i saw those coins online & they're literally sooo weird 😂🤑 like who designed them tho? i mean i get that collectors are hyped but others just dont feel it 🤔💁‍♀️ maybe its bc they're not used to seeing queen elizabeth on coins before? australia's all about keeping it quirky anyway 🙃

🤔 I think it's quite telling that despite some people's creative comparisons, many others have genuinely praised the design as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II's life and legacy 🙌. The Royal Australian Mint's defense of the portrait is also pragmatic, acknowledging that certain aspects of the design may not translate well in metal form 🎨. What's fascinating to me is how different people are responding to the coins – some see it as an opportunity to celebrate the queen's impact on Australia, while others might view it as a chance to collect a unique piece of numismatic history 💰. Either way, I think it's great that there's so much enthusiasm surrounding these commemorative coins! 😊

idk why ppl r makin such a big deal about these coins lol they got all these symbols & motifs from qe2s life n legacy so its like, a tribute right? & yall gotta remember its not just about lookin at it 1 time, its about seein the beauty in it when its etched into metal. some ppl r sayin its not much like her but idk, i think its kinda cool how u can take somethin so iconic n make it fit on a coin. the auctioned coins are all collector's items & they're makin sure they dont go public circulation so theres that. also, 30k of these 50c coins? thats not bad!

I gotta say, this whole coin thing is like when politicians try to sell us out. You know, some people think they're doing Queen Elizabeth II justice, but others are like, "Uh, no thanks!" It's like they're saying, "Hey, we can just slap anything on a coin and call it a tribute." I mean, 30k coins? That's like how many politicians promise to change things in a year. You gotta have some standards, right?

And don't even get me started on the Aussie government being all secretive about the design process. I'm like, "Come on, guys! Transparency is key!" It's like they're trying to pass off something as genuine just because it has Queen Elizabeth II's name on it. Collectors are buying into it, but I'm calling foul. Can we trust that these coins are actually a tribute or just another way for the government to pad their legacy? 🤔👀

I think its actually pretty cool that people are having a strong opinion about something as small as a coin design 🤑. I mean, who wouldn't want to have their thoughts and feelings heard on something like this? And yeah, some people might say it doesn't look much like the queen but honestly, what do we really know about her face when she's not in public? It's not like its going to break or something if its a little off 😂. Plus, I'm loving how collectors are already scrambling to get their hands on these coins, it's like they're trying to prove a point... to themselves, maybe? 🤑
