‘Scary, cold, hungry and lonely’: Volunteer soldier shares experience on front line | CNN

"War Has No Mercy: A Soldier's Descent into Trauma"

For young volunteer soldier Akula, the initial rush of patriotism was quickly replaced by a harsh reality of fear, cold, hunger, and loneliness when he found himself on the front lines of the Russian invasion in Ukraine.

"My experience is not something I would wish upon anyone," Akula shared his harrowing story with CNN's David McKenzie. The 22-year-old soldier, who had joined the fight at the beginning of the conflict, revealed that the trauma of war has taken a devastating toll on his mental health.

The conditions he faced were unbearable - temperatures plummeting to icy lows, rations scarce and meals often going uneaten. But it was the psychological strain that proved most crippling. "I'm scared all the time," Akula confessed. "Every sound, every movement makes me jump. I'm constantly on edge."

Akula's story serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict. Behind the bravado and patriotic rhetoric lies a young man struggling to cope with the trauma of war. His account is a poignant testament to the long-lasting impact of military service on those who serve.

The Ukrainian government has acknowledged the growing mental health crisis affecting soldiers, but many more like Akula remain unspoken. As one soldier so poignantly put it: "War has no mercy."

I'm really worried about these young soldiers getting sent to war 🤕. I mean, they're barely out of their teens and already dealing with this crazy stuff. It's not like they signed up for a summer camp adventure or something 😒. The thought of those conditions and the psychological strain is just heartbreaking. And what's even more disturbing is that it seems like the Ukrainian government isn't doing enough to support them 🤷‍♂️. We need to start having some serious conversations about the real cost of war, not just the headlines 📰.

I gotta say, this war thing is just brutal 💔. I mean, you'd think that when you're fighting for your country, everyone's all about the patriotism and the glory, but what about the poor dudes on the front lines? 🤕 They're stuck in freezing temps with no food or water, and then they come back home expecting everything to be okay? It's just not right 🙅‍♂️. And don't even get me started on the mental health aspect - 22-year-olds should not have to deal with PTSD 💀. We need to start thinking about the real cost of war, not just the politicians' PR spin 📰.

OMG, this guy's story is SO sad 🤕💔 I mean, I can imagine how scared and alone he must've felt on the front lines. It's crazy how quickly patriotism turns into fear and cold reality when you're really in harm's way 😱. And rations going uneaten? That sounds even more harsh. The fact that he's still struggling with PTSD is a major red flag, like, we gotta support these guys more 🤝💕 We can't just talk about war as some patriotic thing; we need to acknowledge the real human cost of it too 💔👊

🤕 this article is giving me all the feels, you know? i mean, who wouldn't want to escape the cold and go eat a decent meal for once 🍔? but seriously, the mental toll of war is so not pretty. it's like, we hear about soldiers coming back with PTSD, but what about those who are still on the front lines struggling to cope? 🤯 akula's story is heartbreaking, but also super important in raising awareness about the human cost of conflict 💔

🤕💔 War is so not cool 🚫😒 I feel bad for this young guy Akula who had to go through all that trauma 💥🌪️. Mental health issues are super serious 🤯 and need to be taken seriously too 😊. Governments should really step up & provide more support to soldiers like him 👍💕. It's not just about patriotism, it's about people's lives 🙏. We gotta think about the human cost of war 🌎💔. Can't let young people suffer like this 😭👀.

I'm really sad to hear about Akula's story 🤕. I can only imagine how hard it must be for him to deal with all that trauma and stress 😩. It's like, you join the army to serve your country, but instead, you become a human machine just trying to survive day by day 💨. And then when you finally get home, everyone's expecting you to be all brave and hero-like again 🙅‍♂️... but what about the real Akulas out there? The ones who are struggling in silence? We need more stories like this to break the stigma around mental health issues 💔. It's time we start treating our soldiers with more care and compassion, you know? 🤗

🤕 just watched this video of a young soldier from Ukraine and i'm literally shook 😲 how can ppl say war is noble or heroic when its basically torture on human minds... 🤯 22 yr old akula joined the fight at 18 and now hes struggling to cope with PTSD 🚨 what kinda world are we living in where our soldiers r expected to deal w/ this alone? 💔 gotta give it to cnn for shedding light on this important issue tho 👏

this story hits way too close to home u guys can't even imagine what goes through our minds when ur stuck in a war zone with no end in sight and the media's always like "our boys are winning" but they don't show the real cost 🤕💔 it's not just about bravery or patriotism, it's about being human and dealing with stuff u can't even begin to imagine 🚫 22-year-olds should be playing video games not fighting for their lives 😩

I'm reading this article about some young soldier and I just can't help but think of all the news we used to watch on our computers back in 2008, remember when that video of the Russian invasion in Georgia came out? It was so intense. But what's crazy is how little things have changed for soldiers like Akula, he's still struggling with PTSD and mental health issues just like some of those veterans who were affected by Iraq. I mean, we used to think that war was a thing of the past, but it seems like it's still really prevalent in our world today 🤕. It's so sad when you think about young people like Akula who are going through this stuff without anyone really knowing what they're going through 💔.

OMG what's going on with these young guys fighting in Ukraine?! 🤯 I mean, I get that they're trying to do their duty and all, but the conditions are insane! ❄️ I can imagine being scared all the time just from every little sound or movement... that's like my worst nightmare 😱. The fact that they're struggling with mental health is just heartbreaking. We need to be supporting these guys more than ever! 💕 It's not just about patriotism, it's about human lives and well-being. We should be having a serious conversation about the consequences of war, not just throwing around patriotic slogans 🤷‍♀️. This story needs more attention, we need to hear from more soldiers like Akula sharing their experiences so we can better understand what they're going through 💬.

OMG this is soooo heartbreaking 🤕 I'm literally getting chills thinking about what Akula went through 🥶 the psychological strain of war is totally not something we can even begin to imagine 💔 22 is way too young for that kinda stuff 😩 and it's just so sad that he's still struggling with anxiety and PTSD after everything he's been through 💖 I'm all for supporting our soldiers, but we need to make sure they're getting the help and care they deserve 🤗
