Scientists film deepest ever fish on seabed off Japan | CNN

Deep-Sea Snailfish: A Rare Glimpse into the Unknown

Scientists have captured stunning footage of the deepest fish ever recorded, a young snailfish found hovering in the darkness at an astonishing depth of 8,336 meters (over 27,000 feet) off the coast of Japan. The remarkable discovery was made by a team of researchers from the University of Western Australia and Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology during a two-month survey using sea robots in deep trenches.

The incredible find not only sets a new record for the deepest snailfish but also sheds light on the habits of these enigmatic creatures, which thrive in some of the most inhospitable environments on Earth. According to marine biologist Alan Jamieson, who led the expedition, "what is significant is that it shows how far a particular type of fish will descend in the ocean."

Snailfish are members of the Liparidae family and are known to inhabit shallow waters, but some species have adapted to survive at extreme depths. The two snailfish caught during the survey were identified as Pseudoliparis belyaevi, with features such as tiny eyes, a translucent body, and a lack of swim bladder that enable them to thrive in the dark, pressurized environment.

The Pacific Ocean is particularly conducive to vibrant activity due to its warm southern current, which encourages sea creatures to venture deeper. The abundance of marine life also provides a rich source of food for bottom feeders like snailfish.

However, the cost of exploring and studying these extreme depths is a significant constraint. Each lander alone costs $200,000 to assemble and operate, making it challenging for scientists to gather more information about creatures living at such great depths.

The discovery of this deep-sea snailfish serves as a reminder of the vast mysteries still awaiting exploration in our oceans. As Jamieson noted, "the challenges are that technology has been expensive and scientists don't have a lot of money." But with continued investment and innovation, we may yet uncover more secrets hidden beneath the waves.

๐ŸŒŠ I'm low-key obsessed with deep-sea creatures! Like, can you even imagine living at 27k feet below sea level? It's like something outta a sci-fi movie ๐Ÿš€ Those tiny eyes and translucent bodies are straight up fascinating! And yeah, I get it, the tech is pricey, but come on, we need to keep exploring these depths to learn more about our oceans ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ’ฆ

๐ŸŒŠ Just think about it... we're still discovering new species that can survive in the darkest depths of our oceans and it's mind-blowing ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, what other creatures can say they've got eyes so small they need to be extra sensitive to see, or a body that's basically transparent? And all this without us even realizing they exist... we've gotta give it up for these little guys ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’ช

omg I just saw this news about that snailfish ๐Ÿ™๐ŸŒŠ and it's insane! 8k meters deep is like, totally mind-blowing!!! can you even imagine being that small but still thriving in such extreme conditions? ๐Ÿ’ฆ I think it's so cool how scientists are still learning about these creatures and we get to see the footage too ๐Ÿ“น! It just makes me want to learn more about our oceans and the amazing things living in them ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ’–

omg like i cant even wrap my head around this!! 8k meters is literally mind-blowing ๐Ÿคฏ and the fact that they caught footage of it is just insane!

i love how scientists are still learning about these creatures and their habitats, its like we have so much to discover underwater! ๐ŸŒŠ

but yeah, exploring deep-sea environments is super expensive, its crazy to think that a lander alone costs 200k ๐Ÿ’ธ. maybe with more funding and tech advancements we can uncover more secrets and learn even more about these amazing creatures!

๐Ÿค” this is wild they're like little monsters living down there at 8k meters lol what's next gonna be humans with gills or something? ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿ’ฆ i mean can you even imagine being that tiny and dark for your whole life no sunlight no friends just eating algae all day๐Ÿ˜‚

OMG ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I just saw this article about the deepest fish ever recorded and I'm literally speechless... 8,336 meters?! ๐Ÿคฏ That's like, totally mind-blowing! You know what would be cool though? If we could explore that depth without all those expensive landers ๐Ÿค‘. Imagine being able to watch snailfish in person without breaking the bank ๐Ÿ’ธ. I wonder if they've ever seen anything like this before... did they have any other weird or amazing discoveries down there? ๐Ÿค” What do you guys think about deep-sea exploration? Should we keep funding research like this? ๐Ÿค‘

I'm seriously mind blown by this deep-sea snailfish finding ๐Ÿคฏ! I mean, can you even imagine being at 27,000 feet deep in the ocean? It's like something out of a sci-fi movie! But what's wild is that these little guys are actually found in some pretty shallow waters too. Like, they're not just extreme-depth specialists - they adapt to survive wherever they can ๐ŸŒŠ. And can we talk about how expensive it is to explore the ocean right now? $200k per lander is crazy! I guess it's worth it for the discoveries that come out of it though. It's like our kids are always saying "you have to spend money to make money" ๐Ÿ’ธ

omg I'm literally speechless about this deep-sea snailfish ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ˜ฒ just thinkin about it livin at 8k meters is insane! u know what's crazy though? the fact that these creatures have adapted to survive in such harsh conditions... tiny eyes, no swim bladder, it's like they're aliens or somethin' ๐Ÿ˜‚ anyway, I'm glad scientists are tryin to explore our oceans more 'cause there's still so much we don't know. hope they can get more funding to keep discoverin' new stuff ๐Ÿคž

omg i just saw the cutest dog video on tiktok ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜ it's got over 10 million views and it's so fluffy ! anyway back to this snailfish thing... i feel like we should explore these deep oceans more but it's crazy expensive ๐Ÿคฏ have you ever seen a place that's been fully mapped? like, every nook and cranny? it would be so cool to know exactly where all the weird sea creatures live ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿš

man this is crazy i mean 27k feet deep is wild like what else could be living down there ๐Ÿคฏ๐ŸŒŠ scientists should totes keep exploring and stuff cuz its like we still know so little about our own planet and oceans anyway got a thing for those deep-sea creatures though they're like total mystery dudes ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’ฆ the fact that they can survive in total darkness with no eyes is just insane what else have we discovered at that depth that's still hiding from us?

I'm not surprised they found another weird fish in the depths of the ocean ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, it's not like it's going to change our lives or anything. Those snailfish are just a bunch of bizarre creatures that exist because we're not smart enough to stop them from living in the dark, cold waters. And now they're going to make a big deal about how expensive it is to study them? Like, duh, it's $200k for one lander ๐Ÿค‘. What's next, are they going to start charging us to watch these fish on YouTube? The ocean's full of mysteries, yeah sure, but what's the point when we're just gonna keep exploiting and polluting it until there's nothing left?

๐ŸŒŠ omg can u believe this?! these snailfish r like from another world lol they thrive in the darkest depths of the ocean & scientists are still learning so much about them ๐Ÿคฏ it's crazy how expensive it is to explore the deep sea though $200k for a lander? ๐Ÿ’ธ that's just nuts! but its def worth it 2 learn more about these creatures & the ecosystem they inhabit ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’š
