Senator speaks out about his struggle with depression | CNN Politics

Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, has publicly discussed his struggles with depression, revealing the emotional toll it took during his recent election campaign.

Fetterman spoke about his downward spiral into depression following his election win in November 2022, stating that he went to therapy and began taking medication to manage his symptoms. The senator described his journey as a difficult one, citing feelings of isolation and an overwhelming sense of responsibility. Despite the challenges, Fetterman credited therapy with helping him find a better coping mechanism.

During his interview, Fetterman emphasized that depression is not something that can be "toughed out," but rather it's a legitimate mental health condition that requires professional treatment. The senator also highlighted the importance of addressing the stigma surrounding mental illness, urging people to speak openly about their struggles with depression and other mental health issues.

Fetterman's candid discussion on his own experiences with depression has sparked renewed conversation around mental wellness in politics, particularly among younger politicians who may be more open to discussing their struggles.

i think its so important that ppl like senator fetterman are talkin openly about their mental health struggles its not somethin we should be ashamed of! depression is a real thing and it can affect anyone, regardless of how successful they seem or what position they hold. i hope more politicians will follow his lead and share their own experiences, so we can break down the stigma surrounding mental illness πŸ€—πŸ’¬

can you imagine being a senator and having to put on a happy face all the time? like, no thanks πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ i'm glad john fetterman is finally talking about his struggles with depression, it's about time we normalize mental health conversations in politics. but honestly, if he had to "tough out" his depression, wouldn't that be kinda messed up? 🀯 like, our brains are not just something we wear on our sleeves and can just flip a switch on when needed... medication and therapy ain't the only way to cope, fam πŸ’Š it's about creating a more open and accepting environment for people to talk about their struggles. kudos to senator fetterman for speaking out πŸ™Œ

πŸ˜’ I gotta say, it's kinda refreshing to see a politician being so honest about their struggles with depression 🀯. We've been conditioned to think that leaders are invincible and always "on" πŸ’ͺ, but let's be real, nobody's perfect πŸ˜‚. It's time we start talking about mental health in politics like it's a legit thing, not just something you can "tough out" or "get over". πŸ’” The stigma around depression is real, and Fetterman's speaking up about it is a major step forward πŸ‘. Maybe if more politicians are willing to share their struggles, we'll start seeing some actual change πŸ”„. And btw, therapy is not just for rich people πŸ’Έ, it's time to make it more accessible to everyone 🌎.

🀝 I'm glad Senator Fetterman is speaking out about this 🌟 depression can be super tough to deal with and I think it's awesome that he's being so open and honest about his own struggles πŸ‘. Mental health is just as important as physical health, you know? And it's refreshing to see a politician actually talking about it rather than sweeping it under the rug πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. It's definitely inspiring to see someone who's not afraid to show vulnerability and talk about their emotions πŸ’–. Maybe this will help break down some of that stigma around mental health issues and make people feel more comfortable talking about it too 🌈

πŸ˜”πŸ€• just thinkin bout senator fettermans story is giving me the blues... depression is no joke, and it's not somethin that people wanna talk about... i feel bad for him havin all that extra stress after winin his election πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. like, we gotta make mental health more accessible and less stigmatized, ya know? can't have people sufferin in silence 🀫... hope more politicians follow suit and be like sen fetterman, talkin openly about their struggles πŸ˜”

I'm glad Fetterman is using his platform to break down those mental illness stigmas πŸŒˆπŸ’¬. It takes a lot of courage to share your struggles with depression, especially when you're still relatively new in politics. I think we can all learn from his honesty and openness about seeking help - therapy and meds aren't just for "weak" people! πŸ€— Moreover, it's refreshing to see someone at that level acknowledging the emotional weight of leadership roles, rather than pretending everything is okay when it's not πŸ’”.

Just read about Sen John Fetterman sharing his struggle w/ depression πŸ˜• it's so brave of him 2 do so publicly! I feel like we're finally getting better at talking about mental health & how it affects people, especially in high-pressure careers like politics 🀝 As a student myself, I've had friends who deal w/ anxiety & depression, and it's awesome that Fetterman is helping break the stigma around it πŸ’– If more politicians were like him, sharing their own struggles, it could really make a difference! Maybe we'll see more young politicians speaking out about their mental health journeys soon? 🀞

omg I'm literally feeling so bad for Sen Fetterman πŸ€• he sounds like he went thru so much and its amazing that he's being so open about it πŸ’– I've had similar issues with anxiety and depression and trust me meds AND therapy saved my life πŸ™ I totally agree w/ him on stigma tho, its SO important to talk about it we need more ppl like him speaking up about their struggles 🌟
