Sequel to The Time Traveler's Wife to be published this autumn

Audrey Niffenegger's highly anticipated follow-up to her bestselling novel 'The Time Traveler's Wife' is set to hit shelves this autumn. The sequel, titled 'Life Out of Order', has been 13 years in the making and promises to deliver a thought-provoking exploration of love, art, and activism.

Set in the same world as the original novel, 'Life Out of Order' delves into the life of Alba DeTamble, the daughter of Henry and Clare, who are at the heart of the original story. Like her parents, Alba suffers from 'Chrono-Displacement Disorder', which causes her to involuntarily travel through time, often arriving naked in unfamiliar surroundings.

According to Niffenegger, the seed for the sequel was planted when she began writing about Alba having two husbands, Zach and Oliver, in different time periods with an overlap. However, as she delved deeper into the story, it took on a life of its own, tackling timely issues such as climate change, politics, and social justice.

The author's personal experiences also influenced her work, particularly following the 2016 US presidential election, which left her feeling despondent but ultimately inspired. "Even if you knew the world was imploding tomorrow, you should still get out there and make things and do things," Niffenegger urged.

In 'Life Out of Order', Alba is a violinist and composer who finds solace in art as she navigates her tumultuous life. From the riots of Chicago's streets to the eerie refuge of the Yellow House, a virtual sanctuary of forgotten memories and lost artefacts, Alba must confront her secrets and keep them hidden from those she loves most.

Niffenegger describes writing 'Life Out of Order' as an all-consuming experience, but one that she will miss. The book promises to be a profoundly moving celebration of love, art, and activism, set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing world.

Published by Jonathan Cape this autumn, 'Life Out of Order' is sure to be a must-read for fans of Niffenegger's original novel and those interested in thought-provoking fiction that tackles the big questions of our time.
