In 'And Sons', Pablo Trapero's English-language debut, a star-studded cast attempts to elevate a convoluted plot, but ultimately finds itself shackled by its own complexity. The film is based on David Gilbert's 2013 novel and boasts an all-star lineup, including Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton.

Nighy takes on the role of Andrew Dyer, a cantankerous literary lion who has fallen on hard times, while Staunton plays his estranged wife Isabel. The two are joined by their adult children, Jamie (George MacKay) and Richard (Johnny Flynn), who have grown increasingly resentful towards their father's treatment of their mother. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Dyer makes a shocking claim about one of his sons – a revelation that raises more questions than answers.

While Nighy delivers a strong performance as the cantankerous author, the film's pacing is plodding, and its reliance on an implausible twist-reveal plot device undermines the emotional impact of key scenes. The entire family is summoned to Dyer's Oxfordshire mansion, where tensions come to a head in a riveting showdown between Staunton and Nighy.

However, even this intense confrontation fails to shake off the feeling that something is amiss with the story. The film's attempts to flesh out its claims to the truth or its implications as fiction fall flat, leaving the audience feeling underwhelmed. A talented cast, including Noah Jupe, Anna Geislerová, and Arthur Conti, can't elevate this mess.

The film's themes of family dynamics, toxic masculinity, and the challenges faced by older generations feel familiar, but 'And Sons' doesn't bring anything new to the table. It's a shame, given the talent involved, as Nighy remains amusing in even his most gruff moments. Still, it's hard not to feel that with better writing and editing, this film could have been something truly special.

I just watched And Sons and I'm like "Dad, why you gotta be so complicated?" Bill Nighy is great as the cantankerous author, but even he can't save this mess from its own convoluted plot 🤯. It's like they took all these deep family drama themes and mashed them into a big ol' plate of spaghetti, hoping we'd just dig in without complaining 🍝. The pacing is slow, the twist-reveal thingy falls flat, and it's just meh 😐. I mean, the cast is talented, but even they can't make this film shine ✨. Nighy still cracks me up when he's being grumpy though, like a 50-year-old toddler having a tantrum 🤣. Maybe next time, Pablo Trapero can write something new and special?

I'm so underwhelmed by this movie 🤔... I mean, who doesn't love a talented cast like Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton trying to make the most of it? 😐 The pacing is seriously slow, and that twist at the end just feels kinda lazy 🙄. It's like they're trying to trick us into caring about the family drama instead of actually investing in their stories 💔. And don't even get me started on how the plot gets all convoluted... I mean, who does Dyer really think he is? 😂

The movie industry is like a big ol' mirror - it reflects our society back at us, but doesn't always show us the parts we'd rather not see 🤯. 'And Sons' feels like one of those movies that's trying to tell a deeper truth about family and relationships, but gets bogged down in its own complexity 💔. I think what's missing here is empathy - if we can't relate to our characters' struggles, it's hard to invest in their stories 🤝. It's like the filmmakers are saying "look at me, I've got a talented cast and a big budget!" but aren't really showing us anything new or surprising 🎥. Maybe that's just my 2 cents, but I think 'And Sons' feels like an opportunity that was squandered by its own flaws 💔.

I'm soooo underwhelmed by this movie 🤔👎 The cast is like whoa, Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton are amazing as always but it's like they're carrying the whole film on their backs. The plot is just too convoluted for its own good - I mean, I liked a good twist but this one was just meh 🙄 And what really bugged me was that they didn't even deliver on some of the emotional moments, it felt like they were just phoning it in 😐 It's like they knew they had a talented cast and just couldn't bring together a coherent story. The themes are great but they got lost in all the chaos 🤯

the problem is they're trying too hard to tackle deep stuff like toxic masculinity & family dynamics without really digging deep into the characters' psyches 🤔 it's like they're going for a 'family drama' stamp on their resume, but they don't actually know how to do that well 😐 bill nighy's performance is pretty great tho, he always brings some level of depth to his roles 👍

🤔 I just watched And Sons with my family over the weekend... it was a bit of a letdown for me. I mean, Bill Nighy is always great to watch, but even he couldn't save the whole thing from feeling kinda messy. The plot twists were supposed to be super surprising, but honestly, they felt like they came out of nowhere and didn't really add up. And yeah, the pacing was a bit slow... I was checking my phone a few times during the movie 📱😴. It's always sad when you've got such a talented cast and crew behind a film, but it still doesn't quite come together in the end. Maybe they'll get another shot at it someday? 👍

I just saw this movie And Sons and man I was so let down 😔. Bill Nighy is always a winner for me, but even he can't save the whole film from its own mess 🤯. The plot is like spaghetti - it's all over the place and makes no sense at times 🍝. I mean, I get what they're trying to say about family dynamics and toxic masculinity, but it feels so heavy-handed and predictable 🤔.

And don't even get me started on the pacing - it was like they took all the excitement out of the story and left me feeling underwhelmed 😴. The cast is talented, but they deserve better than a convoluted plot that doesn't deliver 💪. I'm all for trying new things in cinema, but sometimes you just gotta stick with what works 🙃. Guess I'll be passing on more Pablo Trapero films for now... 👎

omg u no i saw this movie last wkend n i was literally on edge the whole time waiting 4 that twist but when it came its like... meh idk wut happened 🤷‍♀️ anyway i feel u about nighy tho he's sooo good @ it even though the plot was whack i love bill nighy in anything lol and staunton too 👯‍♀️ the cast is just so talented but this movie jus didnt live up 2 its hype 🤔

🤔 I mean, I was really hyped for Pablo Trapero's English debut but honestly, it felt like he didn't quite nail the tone 🎬. The cast is insane though! Bill Nighy is always a winner and Imelda Staunton is so talented. But, for me, the pacing just dragged on too long 😴 and those plot twists? Yeah, they were kinda predictable 🙃. I love how it tackled themes of family dynamics but like, yeah, it didn't bring anything new to the table 💡. Still, Nighy's performance was solid 👏. Maybe he could've carried the film a bit more without all the messy plot threads 🤯

ugh I just watched And Sons 🤕💔 it was so meh. i mean bill nighy is a star but even he can't save this convoluted mess 🤯 the plot was all over the place and the twist was super predictable 📝 plus the whole family drama thing was done to death already. i get that sometimes you gotta tackle tough topics but in this case it felt like the filmmakers just phoned it in 😴 the only good part was nighy's character which was hilarious at times 🤣 but overall it was a total letdown 👎

I'm like 50/50 on 'And Sons'... 🤔 I mean, the cast is incredible and Bill Nighy is always a treat to watch, but for me it's all about pacing issues - feels like it's dragging on too long. The plot twist was kinda cool at first, but by the end of it I was just thinking "okay, got it". 🤷‍♂️ And don't even get me started on how Nighy's character is just so... over-the-top. Can't we have a gruff author who's still somewhat relatable? 😂

omg u guys i just watched And Sons 🤯 i was hella hyped for bill nighy but honestly the whole movie felt like a hot mess 🤦‍♂️ the plot was so convoluted even i got lost lol and the pacing was so slow it felt like they were dragging out the drama 💀 but nighy was def on point as always 😎 i did love the family dynamics tho they had some really intense moments 😬 gotta give props to the cast tho they all brought their a game 🤩 sadly it just fell flat for me 🙄 maybe if it got some serious editing and rewriting it could've been 🔥 but as it stands its just another mediocre film in my book 👎

I gotta say, I'm really disappointed in "And Sons" 🤔. The cast is so talented, but the story just gets all muddled up 😩. It's like they took a bunch of themes and ideas that we've seen before in other movies and just tried to mash them together without any real care for how it would work out 🤦‍♂️. Bill Nighy shines as always, but even his best performance can't save this convoluted mess 😓. I mean, who thought it was a good idea to have an all-star cast in a movie that's just gonna leave you feeling underwhelmed? 🙄 It's like they took all the leftover parts from other movies and put 'em together into one big mess! 🤯

I was kinda hoping for something more depth from Pablo Trapero 🤔, you know? The cast is talented, no doubt about it, but the whole thing just felt like a jumbled mess 📝. I mean, Bill Nighy's performance as the grumpy old dad is top-notch 👏, but it's not enough to save the movie from its own convoluted plot twists 😳. And don't even get me started on how frustrating it was to try and piece together what was actually going on 🤯... I need a solid edit, stat! 💪

"man, i loved bill nighy in 'the office' 🤣 but seriously, his performance here is pretty great, he totally nails the cantankerous author vibe. but u know what's even more frustrating? how they didn't use that energy to develop some actual plot twists instead of relying on this super predictable reveal 🙄 i mean, i'm all for a good twist, but it feels like they just phoned it in here. and its a shame bc the cast is so talented, even geislerová shines in her tiny part 🌟 maybe with a few more drafts, it could've been something special"

idk why ppl r saying its convoluted plot is the problem... seems like theyre just expectin a straightforward family drama . newsflash: fam dramas can be messy & complicated, it's all part of the charm 🤷‍♂️ also, nighy delivers in his role as dyer, but thats about it for me. the cast is talented, but that doesnt save the film from its overall underwhelming experience 😐

I just watched 'And Sons' and I gotta say, I'm still trying to figure out what happened 🤔👀 The plot is like a big ol' mess, but Bill Nighy's performance as the grumpy author was on point 😂 He really brought that character to life. But man, the pacing was slow and the twist at the end felt so forced. I mean, it just didn't feel earned 🤷‍♂️ The whole family dynamic thing is a great concept, but they didn't execute it well. It's like they had some good ideas, but then they just kinda... gave up 😐

I gotta say, I'm so underwhelmed by 'And Sons' 🤔. The cast is literally stacked with super talented actors, but the plot just gets all convoluted and hard to follow. I mean, I get that it's supposed to be some deep exploration of family dynamics and toxic masculinity, but honestly, it feels like they're trying too hard to tackle these big themes without actually saying anything new or interesting 🤷‍♂️. And don't even get me started on the pacing - it's like they're dragging us through this slow-burning, torturous plot that just won't give up its secrets 😩. The performances are solid, I'll give 'em that, but even Bill Nighy can't save this mess 🤦‍♂️.

man i just watched 'And Sons' and im still trying to make sense of it 🤯 i mean bill nighy is amazing as usual but pablo trapero's direction feels really off to me its like he took a bunch of complex ideas and just threw them together without thinking about how they'd flow. and don't even get me started on the twist at the end lol i was literally on the edge of my seat thinking "okay this is gonna be good" but nope it just fell flat 🤕 anyway i do love george macKay as jamie dyer he's got such a great presence on screen even if the rest of the movie doesn't quite live up to his talent 😐
