Syrian refugee elected mayor of German town, years after fleeing war | CNN

A Syrian refugee who arrived in Germany eight years ago has become the first man with Syrian roots to win a mayoral election in Baden-Württemberg. Ryyan Alshebl, 29, won 55.41% of the votes in the municipality of Ostelsheim, defeating two German candidates.

Alshebl's victory was met with cheers from locals who welcomed him as their new mayor. In a statement, he described his win as "sensational" and said it sent an example of broad-mindedness and cosmopolitanism to Germany. He vowed that Ostelsheim would be a place for diversity and inclusiveness.

Alshebl's journey to becoming the town's mayor was far from easy. Born in Syria, he fled the country with his family after protests turned into chaos and the rise of ISIS led to 10.6 million people being displaced by late 2015. Alshebl faced a difficult decision between military service or leaving the country, which ultimately led him to make the perilous journey to Europe.

In Germany, Alshebl worked in administration for seven years before running for mayor. He drew on his experience and promised to prioritize digital access to public services, flexible childcare, and climate protections. As a member of the Green Party and now with German citizenship, he pledged to move to Ostelsheim once elected.

While Alshebl's victory was seen as a positive step towards diversity in Germany, not everyone welcomed him warmly. He faced hateful comments on the campaign trail from far-right fringe voters who opposed his Syrian roots.

Despite this, many residents of Ostelsheim were enthusiastic about their new mayor, with one resident saying "the fairy tale has come true" and praising Alshebl for becoming a symbol of broad-mindedness. Even one of his opponents congratulated him on his win, calling for support from the community.

The town's Integration Minister welcomed Alshebl's victory as an opportunity to showcase diversity in Germany. He expressed hope that it would encourage more people with migration history to run for public office.

As Alshebl prepares to take office, he will be the first Syrian-born man to lead a German municipality. His journey is a testament to the power of resilience and determination in the face of adversity, and his win serves as a beacon of hope for the country's integration efforts.

omg what an inspiring story 🙌💖 ryan alshebls victory is def a game changer for germany especially with all the hate speech he faced on the campaign trail 🤕😡 but it shows that even in tough times u can still make a difference thru hard work & determination 💪🏽 #SyrianRefugee #Germany #IntegrationMatters #DiversityInAction

I'm thinking, this Alshebl guy, he's like a symbol of Germany being all about acceptance 🤝. I mean, it's not just about him winning, but also showing that people from different backgrounds can make a difference in their communities. And yeah, it's crazy how someone with Syrian roots became the mayor, but at the same time, it's awesome that he's breaking barriers for others who might be struggling to find their place. The fact that some people were hateful during the campaign is still pretty harsh, though 😔. But overall, I think this is a positive step forward for Germany and its integration efforts 💚.

🤔 I mean, what's not to love about this? A Syrian refugee becomes mayor of a small town in Germany, it's like, totally awesome! I know some people might be all salty about it, but honestly, who cares what those far-right fringe voters think? It's like, their opinions are so last season. The point is, Ryyan Alshebl won fair and square, and he's gonna make Ostelsheim a place where diversity and inclusiveness thrive! 💖 And let's be real, his story is super inspiring, I mean, the dude had to leave his country, deal with ISIS, and now he's leading a town? That's some next-level stuff right there. 😎

omg i just got the best coffee from this new cafe near my place 🤩 it was like a party in my mouth 😋 i'm talking rich flavors, creamy texture... can't wait to go back there again 💁‍♀️ anyway, have you guys ever tried that new indie band that just dropped on Spotify? 🎸 their vibes are so chill and soothing 😌

🤝 This is literally an amazing story! I mean, can you imagine having to choose between fighting or fleeing your homeland? Alshebl's strength and perseverance are truly inspiring 💪. It shows that even in the darkest times, we have a choice to make, and it's often the difficult ones that lead us to grow and thrive 🌱. And let's be real, his win isn't just about him - it's about the community coming together to support diversity and inclusiveness 🤝🌎. It's a reminder that everyone deserves a chance to succeed, regardless of where they come from or what their background is 🌈.

I'm glad to see Ryyan Alshebl making history as the first Syrian-born mayor in Germany 🙌. It's awesome that he was able to use his experience working in admin to connect with voters and propose solid policies for digital access, childcare, and climate protections 📊💚. However, I do think it's a bit weird that some people got hate comments about him being Syrian... shouldn't we be celebrating diversity instead of making assumptions based on someone's roots? 🤔👥

🤓 I'm loving this development in Germany! It's about time we see more Syrian refugees getting involved in politics and making a difference in their new home. Ryyan Alshebl is an inspiration, coming from nothing to becoming the mayor of Ostelsheim - that's what we call a rags-to-riches story 😊. I'm all for his message of diversity and inclusiveness, it's time for Germany to move forward and show the world what they're made of 🌈.

It's also super refreshing to see local residents coming together to support Alshebl, despite some far-right voters trying to stir up hate. The fact that one of his opponents congratulated him on his win is a great sign that people are starting to see the value in diversity and inclusivity 🙏. Let's keep supporting leaders like Ryyan Alshebl who are making a positive impact in their communities 💪.

This is so cool 🤩, I mean, can you even imagine? A Syrian refugee winning mayoral election in Germany after all these years! It's like something out of a movie, remember when we used to watch those old movies with our parents and grandparents? They were always so inspiring. And the fact that Ryyan Alshebl has to deal with hateful comments from some people... ugh, it just breaks my heart 😔. But you know what? The good guys win in the end! The residents of Ostelsheim are all cheering for him and welcoming him as their new mayor, and I just love that about Germany right now 🙌. It's like they're embracing diversity and inclusiveness instead of trying to hide from it, which is so much better than what happened during the Y2K scare back in 2000 😂. Alshebl's win is a symbol of hope for Germany's integration efforts, and I'm all about that positivity 💖!

I'm so inspired by Ryyan Alshebl's story 🤩! It's a reminder that no matter where we come from or what our background is, we all have the potential to make a difference in our communities. His journey isn't just about winning an election, it's about proving that diversity and inclusiveness are values that can bring people together. We can learn a lot from his resilience and determination in the face of adversity 💪. It's also a great reminder that everyone deserves a second chance and an opportunity to succeed, regardless of their circumstances. So let's all take a page out of Alshebl's book and strive to be more open-minded, welcoming, and inclusive towards others 🌎.

soooo proud of Ryyan Alshebl for making history in Germany 🙌...I mean, who wouldn't want to live in a place where you can get elected mayor at 29? 😂 anyway, it's cool that he was able to overcome so many obstacles and still manage to be all inclusive and stuff. maybe this is the start of something new for Germany - like, actually listening to their immigrant communities 🤞
