The $500 Billion Beauty Industry's Green Ambitions Fall Short

A $500 billion global industry with a pressing environmental challenge, the beauty sector has struggled to achieve its sustainability goals in recent years.

According to a study by Strategy and consulting firm Simon Kucher, 60% of consumers worldwide now prioritize sustainability when making purchases. However, this shift in consumer behavior has not been matched by consistent action from brands in the industry.

Several companies have set environmental goals for themselves, including Lโ€™Oreal and Estee Lauder Companies, but they fall short of their targets.

One area where the industry lags is packaging. 95% of beauty products are thrown away annually, with a significant portion not being recycled.

As plastic waste becomes increasingly alarming worldwide, companies such as FEKKAI claim to use up to 95% PCR content in their packaging, but sourcing issues have limited this goal's success.

Beauty retailers also play an under-utilized role in addressing sustainability issues.

Some argue that government regulations are necessary to enforce standards for brands operating globally. Others believe market leadership is key.

While regulation can set a minimum standard, it cannot guarantee the availability of sustainable products in all regions.

The effectiveness of the current approach to sustainability in the beauty industry remains uncertain, with experts warning that more collective advocacy and initiative will be needed to address the industry's climate shortcomings.

Ugh, not surprising tbh... I mean, a 500b industry saying it wants to go green but still churning out like 95% of their packaging is trash ๐Ÿšฎ๐Ÿ’”. Can't say I blame consumers for being skeptical when they see those eco-friendly claims on ads and then the reality is just more plastic waste ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. Brands need to step up their game, not just point fingers at governments or each other.

Its crazy how a multibillion dollar industry can't seem to get its act together on sustainability ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, consumers are making it clear they care about the planet, but brands just aren't catching up fast enough. And its not like they don't have options - companies like Fekkai are trying hard to reduce waste with PCR packaging, but sourcing issues and economies of scale are getting in the way.

I think a combo approach would work best here... governments can set some basic standards and regulations (like, let's say carbon footprint targets or specific recycling rates), but also brands need to step up their game. Market leadership is key, but so are government incentives and public awareness campaigns. We need more collective effort from all sides - not just consumers, but companies and governments too ๐Ÿ‘ฅ

I think this whole thing is super interesting but also really frustrating ๐Ÿค”. I mean, 60% of people care about the environment, but brands are still not doing enough? It's like they're just paying lip service at this point ๐Ÿ’ธ. And don't even get me started on packaging โ€“ it's crazy that 95% of beauty products end up in the trash ๐Ÿ“ฆ. I think we need to see more leadership from these companies and governments to make real change happen ๐Ÿš€. We can't just rely on market pressure alone; someone needs to step up and set some standards ๐Ÿ‘Š. And have you seen the PCR content goals? 95% is great, but it's not enough if they're still struggling to source materials ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. This whole industry needs a serious overhaul if we want to make sustainability a priority ๐Ÿ’ช.

๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ The beauty industry is like, super slow to make changes, you know? Like 60% of consumers care about sustainability but brands are still all over the place. It's not just packaging, either - they're just not doing enough in terms of sourcing and production processes.

I'm all for some kind of regulation, tbh... like, we can't keep relying on companies to do the right thing on their own. But at the same time, I get why market leaders want to take charge and set a standard. It's like, if L'Oreal and Estee Lauder are already making moves, then other brands should be following suit.

But what really gets me is how much waste we're still generating in the industry... 95% of products just get thrown away each year? That's insane! We need to see some serious changes from the beauty companies ASAP. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’ช

omg u guys this is wild lol like $500 billion beauty industry can't even get its act together on sustainability goals ๐Ÿ˜‚ 60% of consumers care about eco-friendliness but brands are still not listening ๐Ÿ“ฃ i mean L'oreal and estee lauder companies setting targets but missing the mark 95% of products go to waste every year?!?! that's crazy ๐Ÿ’€ and packaging is a big deal too plastic waste is everywhere ๐ŸŒŽ companies like FEKKAI trying to do their part with PCR content but sourcing issues are whack ๐Ÿ™„ market leadership or gov't regulations? idk what's gonna fix this industry lol need more advocacy & init from brands & consumers alike ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ

I'm like totally bummed out about this news ๐Ÿค•. I mean, a $500 billion industry is huge, but if they can't even get their act together when it comes to sustainability, what does that say about us as consumers? We're literally paying more for products and expecting them to be good for the planet... meanwhile, 95% of beauty products are just getting thrown away. I feel like companies are just trying to save a face with these PR statements, but nobody's really doing the hard work to make real change happen ๐Ÿ’ธ. And don't even get me started on packaging - I mean, come on guys! We need more innovation here ๐Ÿค”.

THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY NEEDS TO STEP UP ITS GAME WHEN IT COMES TO SUSTAINABILITY!!!! I MEAN, WE KNOW CONSUMERS ARE GETTING MORE CONSCIOUS ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT, BUT BRANDS JUST ARENT DOING ENOUGH TO KEEP UP ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’š. IT'S LIKE THEY'RE JUST GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS WITHOUT REALLY MAKING A CHANGE. AND PACKAGING IS SUCH A BIG ISSUE - 95% OF BEAUTY PRODUCTS END UP IN LANDFILLS EVERY YEAR?! THAT'S JUST MIND-BOGGLING ๐Ÿ™„. I THINK MARKET LEADERSHIP IS KEY, BUT SOME KIND OF GOVERNMENT REGULATION COULDN'T HURT EITHER... WE NEED TO SEE MORE BRANDS TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR ACTIONS AND MAKING SUSTAINABLE CHOICES ๐Ÿ˜Š.

I'm like totally disappointed in this $500 billion industry, right? It's all about making a buck, but when it comes to saving the planet ๐ŸŒŽ, they're just not stepping up their game. I mean, 60% of consumers care about sustainability, but brands are still dragging their feet. It's like they think consumers are just gonna keep on buying and not expect anything in return. Newsflash: we want sustainable products that don't harm the environment! ๐Ÿšฎ And yeah, government regulations might be needed to kickstart some change, but it's also important for companies to take ownership of their impact. Maybe if L'Orรฉal and Estee Lauder actually delivered on those promises, it would inspire other brands to follow suit? Until then, I'm not buying (pun intended ๐Ÿ˜‰) what they're selling...

I'm not surprised lol ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. The $500 billion beauty industry is still all about making a quick buck, even if it means contributing to our planet's demise. I mean, who really cares about sustainability when you can have a cheap, trendy product that looks cool for 5 minutes? And don't even get me started on the companies that claim to be eco-friendly but are just greenwashing ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’ฆ. It's all just marketing gimmicks at this point. And what's up with the packaging issue, like, it's not that hard to design recyclable products or use biodegradable materials. Companies just don't want to invest in the extra cost, obviously ๐Ÿ’ธ. I'm gonna keep calling BS until we actually see some real change ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ‘Ž

It's really disheartening to see a multibillion-dollar industry like cosmetics struggling to meet its environmental goals ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ฆ I mean, we're talking about a sector where innovation is supposed to thrive, but instead, it seems like most brands are just treading water when it comes to sustainability. The stats on packaging waste are staggering - 95% of beauty products ending up in landfills? It's like they say, the devil is in the details ๐Ÿ“ And what's with the lack of consistency from these companies? I mean, L'Orรฉal and Estee Lauder have set ambitious targets, but it seems like they're just paying lip service to sustainability. We need more than just empty promises, we need concrete action ๐Ÿ’ช

I'm so surprised by this news ๐Ÿคฏ. Like, we've been hearing about the importance of sustainability for ages now and yet the beauty industry is still lagging behind ๐Ÿ™„. I mean, it's not like they're not trying or anything... but 60% of consumers caring about sustainability doesn't necessarily translate to actual change happening in the companies themselves.

I'm so over the excuses about sourcing issues too. Like, companies can't just blame their suppliers and hope for the best ๐Ÿ™„. The industry as a whole needs to step up its game and find more creative solutions to reduce waste and increase recycling rates.

I do think that market leadership can play a big role in pushing sustainability standards forward ๐Ÿ’ช, but I also think we need to see more government regulation to hold companies accountable ๐Ÿšซ. It's not just about individual brands doing the right thing... it's about creating a culture of sustainability across the entire industry.

Anyway, I guess this news is a bit late to the party ๐ŸŽ‰, but I'm glad someone is finally bringing attention to this issue ๐Ÿ’ก. Let's see what we can do to make some real change happen! ๐Ÿ’–

I'm so tired of reading about how big companies like L'Oreal are saying they're doing their part for the environment but it's just not happening ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. Like, 95% PCR content in packaging sounds amazing until you realize that actually sourcing that stuff is way harder than they think ๐Ÿ’ธ. And don't even get me started on how much plastic waste beauty products contribute to every year... it's like, hello! We need to do better ๐ŸŒŽ. I wish more retailers would take the lead on sustainability and make it easy for consumers to choose eco-friendly options when shopping online or in-store ๐Ÿ‘.

i totally feel like companies should do more ๐Ÿค”. i mean they're making these huge profits off our faces & skin care routines but then they just throw away all those plastic packaging thingies without even thinking about it? that's just crazy. some brands are trying tho, like fekkai & L'oreal, and that's great, but we need more of them to follow suit ๐Ÿ’ช

I'm so disappointed ๐Ÿค• when I see brands like L'Oreal and Estee Lauder Companies setting ambitious goals for sustainability but not quite hitting their targets ๐Ÿ“‰. It's like, we get it, you want to save the planet ๐ŸŒŽ, but it seems like some of these big players are still playing catch-up with plastic waste in packaging... 95% of beauty products ending up in landfills is insane ๐Ÿ˜ฒ. I think what we need is for more market leaders to take charge and push for real change, rather than just paying lip service ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. We can't rely on governments alone to fix this problem - it needs a collective effort from brands, consumers, and retailers alike ๐Ÿ’ช.

It's crazy how much of an impact consumers have on businesses nowadays ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, 60% of people actually care about sustainability when making a purchase? That's like a whole new level of responsibility for companies. And it's weird that they're not taking it more seriously, considering the state of the planet is getting worse by the minute ๐ŸŒŽ.

I'm all for market leadership being key, but at some point, we need to have stricter regulations in place. It's just common sense. Companies can't just keep making promises and then not deliver on them. And what about the packaging thing? 95% PCR content sounds great, but if they can't even source it reliably, it's basically useless ๐Ÿ“ฆ.

I think beauty retailers could play a bigger role in this too. They're already dealing with waste every day, so why can't they just push for better recycling options and sustainable practices? It's like, easy peasy, right? But I guess that requires some serious effort from the companies themselves ๐Ÿ’ช.

I'm kinda surprised by how slow the beauty industry is moving towards sustainability ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ฆ I mean, we've been hearing about this issue for years now and it seems like not many brands are taking concrete steps. The fact that 95% of products get thrown away each year is just crazy ๐Ÿ’€ And yeah, government regulations might be needed to kick some companies into gear, but at the same time, we can't rely on them alone ๐Ÿค What's really important here is for brands to step up and show us what they're made of - literally! ๐Ÿ’ช

I'm not surprised by this news at all ๐Ÿ™„... like, 60% of people care about the planet but companies are just gonna do whatever they want and make a profit off it ๐Ÿ’ธ. And those environmental goals? Forget about it, they're just PR stunts to make us feel good for a sec before we can't even find decent eco-friendly products anywhere ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. And don't even get me started on packaging... 95% of beauty products end up in landfills because of plastic waste and companies are still using non-recyclable materials? Give me a break ๐Ÿ˜’. I swear, the only thing that's gonna change is if consumers make their voices heard and demand better ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ, but until then, we're stuck with this mess ๐Ÿ’”.
