The families forced to pay ransoms to free loved ones in Sudan’s el-Fasher

Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has been extorting ransoms from families of its captured victims in the besieged city of el-Fasher, leaving many civilians living in fear and terror. In October, the paramilitary group stormed the city, leading to widespread violence, including summary executions, rape, and mass looting.

Since then, dozens of people have been abducted by RSF fighters, who demand hefty sums from their families for their release. According to local monitors, international non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and victims' families, it is estimated that thousands of people have paid these ransoms, with amounts ranging from $20 to $20,000.

The situation has left many families in a state of desperation, as the RSF has largely denied committing atrocities against its own forces. However, eyewitness accounts suggest otherwise, including reports of ethnic violence targeting non-Arab civilians, who have been forced to flee their homes and seek refuge in neighboring villages.

One family, that of 27-year-old Mabrooka, was particularly affected when her husband and brother were taken by RSF fighters. They were later released after Mabrooka's family paid a ransom of $20,000. Despite the reunion, they are still living in fear, with the family believing that the RSF could soon target them again.

The humanitarian crisis in el-Fasher has seen over 70,000 people displaced since October 26, with many more feared to be unaccounted for. According to the United Nations, only around 6,000 of those displaced have reached safety in Tawila, leaving many families still searching for loved ones.

Videos have emerged showing RSF fighters holding victims for ransom, including a professor who pleaded with his colleagues to pay a $3,330 ransom to secure his release. The case highlights the desperation and fear that civilians are experiencing at the hands of the RSF.

Humanitarian agencies are warning that thousands of people may have been abducted by the RSF, with many more feared to be in danger. Relief efforts are being hampered by the conflict and a lack of information from the government about the situation on the ground.

In summary, the Sudanese government's paramilitary forces are engaging in a series of horrific human rights abuses against civilians, including extortion ransoms that have left families in fear for their lives.

this is just sick, thousands of people being held hostage by these paramilitary groups and their families having to pay ransom, its like a never ending nightmare for the victims and their loved ones 🤯... and the worst part is that these groups are denying any wrong doing, its not fair on the civilians who have been through so much trauma already 💔... something needs to be done about this, the international community should be stepping in to help bring those responsible to justice 🚫... and what really gets me is how many people have lost their lives or been forced to flee their homes, its like they're invisible 😩...

🤕 I'm so worried about these families living in el-Fasher. Can you imagine having to pay $20k to get your loved one back? It's like they're being blackmailed and it's just not right. 🙅‍♀️ The lack of info from the government is frustrating too - shouldn't they be doing more to protect these civilians?

And what really gets me is that these families are still living in fear even after their loved ones were released. That reunion was a close call for them, but I hope they can finally start rebuilding their lives without all this stress. 🤞 As a parent, it's just heartbreaking to think about kids who've lost family members and now have to live with that trauma forever.

We need more support for these families and the relief efforts need to be stepped up ASAP. It's not fair that thousands of people are still missing or displaced. We should all be doing everything we can to help those in need right now! 💖

I'm so disturbed by what's happening in Sudan right now 🤕. Thousands of people have been held hostage by the RSF and their families have to pay huge amounts of money just to get them back. It's like, they're treating humans like commodities, you know? 😩 And the fact that many of these ransoms are being paid is just heartbreaking. I mean, what kind of world do we live in where people have to resort to paying ransom for their own family members? 🤯

And it's not just the financial burden, but also the emotional toll it takes on families who've lost loved ones and are still waiting to hear from them. My heart goes out to all those affected by this crisis. We need to raise awareness about what's happening in Sudan and put pressure on our leaders to do something about it 🗣️.

omg is this like real life or something? people getting held hostage by a group and their fam having to pay $$$ to get them back its so messed up 🤯 how do they even know who's been paid and who hasn't?! and what's with all the $$$, like, does that ransom money just disappear into thin air? and poor mabrooka and her family, i feel for them 🙏 so many ppl have to deal with this horror every day. can we get some updates on what's happening in el-fasher pls?

this is insane 🤯 what kind of state just lets its own military terrorize innocent people and then denies any wrongdoing? i mean we know the situation with el-fasher is bad but it's not like this anywhere else, right? the fact that thousands of people have paid these ransoms just to be reunited with their loved ones is heartbreaking. can't imagine what it must be like for those who haven't been lucky enough to pay up or have family members still missing.

we need more transparency and accountability from our leaders, especially when it comes to human rights abuses. we shouldn't have to rely on NGOs and local monitors to tell us what's going on. the international community needs to step in here and help facilitate a safe way for these families to seek justice and compensation. this is just not right 💔

The situation in el-Fasher is absolutely heart-wrenching 🤕. I mean, can you believe that people are being held for ransom and their families are being forced to pay thousands of dollars? It's just devastating. The fact that eyewitnesses have reported ethnic violence targeting non-Arab civilians is really disturbing too. It's like the RSF doesn't care about human life at all. And what's even more frustrating is that the government seems to be denying any wrongdoing, while humanitarian agencies are warning that thousands of people may have been abducted. It's a perfect example of how extremist groups can wreak havoc on innocent lives 🚨.

I'm seeing this all over my feeds and it's just heartbreaking 🤕. These people are being held hostage by the RSF and forced to pay thousands of dollars just to get their loved ones back. It's like they're being treated as if they have no dignity or humanity left in them. I mean, what kind of person does that? The fact that eyewitnesses are coming forward saying there's been ethnic violence against non-Arab civilians is just devastating. We need to be calling out these human rights abuses for what they are - atrocities 🚨. And the fact that relief efforts are being hindered by the government not giving us any info on the ground just makes it all worse. Thousands of people might be in danger and we're just sitting here with our eyes closed 😔.

omg can u believe what's happening in sudan?? they're taking people hostage and asking for $$$ from their fams like it's no big deal 🤯 i mean i get that there's a conflict going on but extortion ransoms? that's just not right, man 😔 especially when it affects innocent ppl like the professor dude who was just trying to pay his way out of trouble 🤷‍♂️ anyway u can imagine how scary it must be for families who have lost loved ones or are worried they'll lose them next? 🙏 it's like, humanitarian crisis mode over here and i hope someone gets to the bottom of this ASAP 💪

OMG this is soooo sad 🤕 RSF is literally taking advantage of these families and it's just not right. The fact that they're demanding huge sums of money from people who are already going through trauma is just heartbreaking 💔. And the thing is, there's no transparency about what's really happening on the ground which makes things even more confusing 🤯. We need to get the truth out and make sure these families receive the help they need ASAP 🚨💪

omg u gotta wonder if those ransoms are even making it to the ppl who need them lol thts like 6k ppl displaced n still dont no what happened to them meanwhile some1 pays $20k 4 a kid & its all good 🤑💸 but seriously tho, cmon rsf ur a paramilitary group not a extortion racket wut kinda "protection" are u offering?

Man, I'm still shaking my head over this one 🤯. The stories coming out of el-Fasher are just heartbreaking. Can you imagine having to pay $20,000 just to get your loved ones back? It's like, what even is the point of that kind of money? Does it even make a difference in the end? I mean, Mabrooka and her family were lucky enough to have their husband and brother released, but they're still living in fear. It's just... *sigh* 😔

And the numbers are crazy - thousands of people abducted, many more unaccounted for. It's like, what are we even doing here? Are we even making a difference? The videos showing RSF fighters holding victims for ransom... it's just too much to watch 🤕.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but something needs to be done ASAP. We need more info from the government about what's going on, and we need to support these families who are suffering. It's just... so sad 😔.

I don’t usually comment but I just can’t help feeling so disgusted by this news 🤯. These Sudanese Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are taking advantage of innocent people's suffering and exploiting their desperation to get rich off ransom money 💸. It's like they're treating civilians like animals, no regard for human life or dignity whatsoever 😱.

I mean, $20,000 is a small fortune, but to think that families have to pay such exorbitant amounts just to be reunited with their loved ones... it's just heartbreaking 🤕. And what really gets me is how these RSF fighters are denying any wrongdoing, despite the eyewitness accounts and videos showing them holding people for ransom 💣.

It's a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions, with over 70,000 people displaced and many more unaccounted for 🔥. The Sudanese government needs to take responsibility for what's happening on the ground and provide some real information about the situation. This lack of transparency is just making things worse 📚.

I don’t usually comment but I think this situation highlights how quickly human rights abuses can escalate when there's a power vacuum and no accountability 💔. We need more voices speaking out against these atrocities, like Mabrooka and her family who are still living in fear despite being reunited with their loved ones 🙏.

The state of affairs with the RSF is absolutely appalling 🤯. I mean, can you even imagine having to pay $20k just to get your loved one back? It's like they're treating people as commodities or something. And to make matters worse, the RSF is denying any wrongdoing, which is just laughable given all the eyewitness accounts and videos that are coming out.

It's not just the ransom aspect that's so disturbing – it's also the fact that these people are being targeted based on their ethnicity. Non-Arab civilians have been forced to flee their homes and seek refuge in neighboring villages because of the violence. The humanitarian crisis is dire, with over 70k people displaced and many more feared to be unaccounted for.

It's heartbreaking to see families living in fear and desperation, with no end in sight. And what really gets my goat is that these human rights abuses are being perpetuated by a group of paramilitary forces who claim to be protecting the country? Give me a break 🙄. The government needs to step up and provide some real support to the people affected by this crisis, instead of just sweeping it under the rug.

I'm really worried about what's going down in el-Fasher 🤕. These RSF fighters are basically preying on the most vulnerable people - civilians who've already lost everything because of this conflict. Extorting ransoms from families is just not right, and it's making life even harder for those affected. The fact that many have paid up, hoping to see their loved ones safe again, is a total travesty 🤯. Meanwhile, the government seems to be in the dark about what's really going on, which isn't helping to resolve this crisis. We need some real accountability here! 😡

I'm so worried about what's going down in el-Fasher 😱. The RSF's actions are absolutely appalling and I think it's really sad how many people have been affected by this situation. Thousands of people paying ransom is just crazy 💸. And to make matters worse, eyewitness accounts say the RSF has even engaged in ethnic violence against non-Arab civilians 👥. It's like they're targeting innocent families who are just trying to survive.

The fact that some families are being told the RSF didn't commit these atrocities themselves 🤷‍♀️ is really frustrating. I think it's time for someone to hold them accountable. The situation is also super heartbreaking when you see videos of people being held hostage for ransom, like that professor who was pleading with his colleagues to pay up 📹.

We need to do more to help the families affected by this and support the humanitarian efforts 🤝. It's not fair that over 70,000 people have been displaced and many more are still unaccounted for 😔. We should be urging the government to give us more information about what's going on in el-Fasher so we can better help those in need 💡.

The international community needs to speak up and take action against these human rights abuses 👊. It's not just a moral issue, it's also a matter of supporting those who are being targeted and protecting innocent civilians 🌎. We need to do everything we can to support the victims of this conflict and bring justice to those responsible 💥.

🚨💔 I'm really worried about what's happening in el-Fasher right now... thousands of people are living in terror because of the RSF's actions. It's absolutely appalling that they're demanding ransoms from families of abducted victims. The fact that they're denying committing atrocities against their own forces is just mind-boggling 🤯. I mean, what kind of organization operates like this? And it's not just the people who are being held captive - their families are also suffering. It's a humanitarian crisis and someone needs to step in ASAP 💪.

I think we need more accountability for the RSF and their leaders should be held responsible for these heinous crimes. The fact that some videos have emerged showing them holding victims for ransom is just heartbreaking 🤕. What's even worse is that many people are too scared to come forward with information because they're afraid of retaliation.

We need to get more info about the situation on the ground and support humanitarian agencies in their efforts to help those affected by this crisis 🌎. This isn't just a Sudanese issue, it's a human rights issue that needs global attention 🔥.
