OMG u guys I'm so stoked about Merrily We Roll Along finally getting the recognition it deserves!!! I mean, I've seen it live and I can attest that Sondheim's music is EVERYTHING And yeah, I was a bit skeptical when I first heard the story but now I get why it's so genius - the way it shows how life's compromises and losses shape us. I love how Jonathan Groff brings such depth to Franklin's character The film adaptation can't come soon enough! Are you going to see it in cinemas?
I was there when I saw Merrily We Roll Along for the first time back in '07 and I gotta say, Sondheim's genius is only now being fully appreciated! The way he flips that narrative around, it's like watching a masterpiece unfold before your eyes. I'm not surprised it took 40 years for it to come to Broadway though - Sondheim's work doesn't conform to traditional timelines. It's all about the emotional journey and how life gets in the way of our dreams
I was so excited to see Merrily We Roll Along finally getting its due on Broadway after all those years! The story is just so beautifully complex and Sondheim's music... *sigh* it gives me goosebumps every time . I remember when my sister was studying musical theatre in college, they performed this show in her drama club and I was blown away by the emotional depth of it. I think what really changed for me was seeing the cast perform live - Jonathan Groff's performance as Franklin just broke my heart . And can we talk about how cool it is that the show has been reworked to have more nuance in its performances? It's like Sondheim's genius shines even brighter now!
