The Last Dinner Party's sophomore effort, From the Pyre, has arrived at breakneck speed, leaving fans and critics alike wondering if the London quintet's meteoric rise was indeed manufactured by the music industry. However, despite their swift ascent, the band remains defensive about their accelerated trajectory, insisting that timing felt like a natural progression to them.

In reality, From the Pyre is anything but an opportunistic cash-grab. The album is a dizzyingly dense collection of intricate tracks that marry biblical imagery, baroque detailing, and cacophonous 00s indie energy. Tracks such as "Second Best" and "if This Is the Killer Speaking's" narrator take on Kate Bush-inspired personas, while others grapple with tortured metaphors.

The problem lies in this sonic and lyrical extravagance often coming at the expense of basic melodic pleasure. The band's maximalist approach can be overwhelming, resulting in tracks that feel more like concept albums than genuine pop songs. However, when they restrain their instincts and allow themselves to breathe, the Last Dinner Party's erudite, elaborate pop shines through.

Take "I Hold Your Anger," for instance, a brooding exploration of maternal instinct that showcases the band's ability to craft anthemic, singable hooks. It's this rarefied quality – one that requires restraint and subtlety – that makes From the Pyre feel more like an artist's statement than a hastily assembled commercial follow-up.

Despite its impressive ambitions, From the Pyre often prioritizes style over substance, leaving the listener to sift through the album's elaborate trappings in search of genuine musicality. While it's clear The Last Dinner Party is on the cusp of something special, this sophomore effort feels overly focused on showcasing their conceptual prowess rather than honing their songwriting skills.

I gotta say, I'm still trying to wrap my head around From the Pyre. On one hand, I love how they're not afraid to experiment and push boundaries - it's like they're having a total blast in the studio! 🎶 But on the other hand, sometimes I feel like it's a bit too much going on at once... the production is insane and it's hard for me to really connect with some of the tracks. Like, don't get me wrong, I appreciate the ambition, but can they just dial it back a notch? 😅

omg i totally get what u mean 🤯 they sound so talented but sometimes i feel like they're trying too hard to be deep and clever 🤓 instead of just writing catchy pop songs lol who needs all that complexity when ur on fire? 💥 "i hold your anger" is literally my fave track tho 🎵

🤔 I feel like the band is trying too hard to make a statement with their music. It's like they're trying to fit every concept and idea into one album 📚💡, and it ends up feeling cluttered and overwhelming 😩. Don't get me wrong, some of the tracks are absolute bangers 💥, but the ones that drag on too long start to feel like homework assignments rather than songs 🎓.

I wish they could dial it back a notch and focus more on crafting catchy hooks and melodies 🎵. I mean, we're all adults here, can't we just enjoy some good pop music without having to decipher every lyric or analyze the symbolism? 😂 Give me something simple and infectious that just makes me wanna dance 💃!

I just listened to "From the Pyre" and I gotta say, it's like they're trying too hard to be the next big thing 🤯. Don't get me wrong, some of the tracks are amazing, but it feels like they're more focused on making a concept album than actually writing good songs. I mean, have you heard "I Hold Your Anger"? That one's catchy, for sure... but the rest of the album is just like, wow, a lot of stuff going on 🤯. It's like they're trying to outdo Kate Bush or something (no offense to Kate Bush fans). For me, it's all about simplicity and hooking you from the start. This album feels like an overcomplicated mess 🎶😐

I gotta say, I'm a bit underwhelmed by The Last Dinner Party's sophomore album From the Pyre 🤔. Don't get me wrong, they're pushing boundaries and all that jazz, but sometimes I feel like they're getting lost in their own genius 💥. Like, yeah, those baroque detailing and Kate Bush-inspired personas are cool and all, but can we please just have a catchy hook every now and then? 🎵 I mean, take "I Hold Your Anger" – it's a total banger, but the rest of the album feels like it's trying too hard to be fancy. It's like they're so focused on making a statement that they forgot how to make a song 😊. Still, I'm excited to see where they go from here!

I gotta say, I'm loving the ambition behind From the Pyre, but at times it feels like they're trying too hard to make a statement 🤯. Don't get me wrong, tracks like "I Hold Your Anger" show what they're capable of when they let their guard down and focus on crafting a solid pop song. But when they're overthinking things, the album can feel like a bit of an endurance test... my ears get fatigued from all the going big or going home 😴. I think it's great that they're pushing boundaries, but maybe next time they can find a balance between their artistic vision and, you know, making something that just plain fun to listen to 🎵

ugh i love bands that have big ambitions but sometimes its like they wanna be too clever for their own good 🤯🎸 i mean dont get me wrong from the pyre is a great album and all, but it feels like they're trying to cram too much into every single track...like yeah we get it you guys are smart and can write some deep lyrics, but can u also make us wanna sing along? 🎤😒

ugh i feel u about tldp's approach to songwriting 🤯 they're like "let's create a 10-minute concept album with 5 different moods and 3 different singers" and then wonder why it's overwhelming lol. i mean, i love the biblical imagery and all that, but sometimes i just wanna sing along to a catchy chorus without having to decipher 20 layers of meaning 🎶. "i hold your anger" is like the only track that really gets it right though - that song is fire 🔥

I gotta say 🤔, I love how ambitious From the Pyre sounds like! But at the same time, I can see why it might feel overwhelming - all that detail and imagery can be a lot to take in 😅. For me, the key is when they dial it back and let those anthemic hooks shine through... "I Hold Your Anger" is a great example of that 🎵. But yeah, I can understand how prioritizing style over substance might make the album feel like an art project rather than a cohesive pop album 🎨. Still, The Last Dinner Party seems like they're on to something special, even if this sophomore effort doesn't quite hit all the right notes yet 😊

I'm not sure I agree with the criticism that From the Pyre prioritizes style over substance... 🤔 I mean, don't get me wrong, some tracks can feel a bit overwhelming, but to me it's like they're playing a game of musical chess - all these intricate pieces and strategies come together in unexpected ways! 😄 And yeah, "I Hold Your Anger" is a total standout - that hook is infectious! But what really got me thinking is how the band's maximalism can also be seen as a strength? I mean, it's like they're pushing boundaries and exploring new sounds... maybe that's exactly what their fans want? 🎸

🤔 I gotta say, I'm loving the Last Dinner Party's sound, but From the Pyre feels like it's got a bit too much going on 🎉. Like, I get it, they're trying to push boundaries and all that jazz 💥, but sometimes it feels like they're sacrificing melody for the sake of being edgy 🔪. I mean, I love tracks like "I Hold Your Anger" when they're stripped down, you know? But some of these longer songs just feel like they're dragging on forever 🕰️. Still, I'm super excited to see where this band goes from here 🚀!

omg u guys, i'm lowkey disappointed with their new album from the pyre its like they're trying too hard to be deep and all that lol i mean i get it they're trying to convey some pretty complex emotions through their lyrics but sometimes less is more? tracks like "second best" are like what is this even supposed to sound like?? its like they took every obscure reference book and threw them in a blender

i do love the song "i hold your anger" tho that's like a masterclass in songwriting right there, it's not trying too hard and just lets the melody speak for itself. but idk maybe i'm just not getting the full vision here and thats what bothers me lol they're so focused on being conceptual artists now that they're forgetting how to make a catchy pop song

I'm not sure I agree with some of the criticism they're getting about From the Pyre... I mean, have you listened to "Second Best"? 🤯 That track is a masterclass in building tension and atmosphere! It's like they're taking all these complex ideas and emotions and distilling them down into this one killer song. And yeah, maybe some of it can feel overwhelming at first, but that's part of the charm, right? I'd love to see more people embracing their unique sound rather than expecting them to "simplify" just because it's not your cup of tea 😐

omg i just listened to from the pyre by last dinner party and tbh i'm all over the place - they're like totally pushing boundaries with this album but sometimes it feels like too much is being asked of me aka my poor eardrums 🤯 i love how they're experimenting with different sounds and themes but can't help but feel that some tracks are more like concepts than actual songs 🎶 for instance "second best" is sooo good but then there's others that just kinda get lost in the chaos 🌪️ anyone else have this problem where their favorite bands release albums that are too ambitious? 🤔

omg i'm still trying to wrap my head around this album 🤯 they're literally so talented but like some of these tracks are just too much to handle idk if its a good thing or not lol does it feel like an art project or a pop song? i loved "I Hold Your Anger" though that one was fire 💥 and the way they could balance all these ideas and emotions was really inspiring 🤩

omg i'm literally OBSESSED with TLDP!!! 🤩 from the pyre is like a masterclass in creating an immersive experience - the lyrics are so deep and intricate, it's like they're speaking a secret language that only us die-hards can understand lol. but at the same time, i get what you're saying about the sonic extravagance... sometimes it feels like they're trying too hard to be complex and elaborate, and it does overpower the melodies 🎶. but then songs like "i hold your anger" come along and remind me that they CAN do pop right when they want to! 😍 i'm just excited to see where this album takes them, and if they can refine their sound to make it even more special ❤️

omg u guys, i'm literally stuck between my love for this album and how overwhelming it can be 🤯 like, from the pyre is defo a concept album at heart but sometimes i feel like they're trying too hard to make it all deep and meaningful 💭 it's not that i don't appreciate the biblical imagery or baroque detailing etc... but come on, can't we just have some catchy hooks for once? 😂 "i hold your anger" though is a total bop 🎶 it shows that they can dial back their complexity and make something really relatable and anthemic 💖

omg i'm so confused about this album lol i mean its like they're trying to be super deep and complex but also kinda boring at times? 🤔 i love that one track "I Hold Your Anger" tho it's so catchy! why do some songs feel like concept albums and not pop songs? isnt that kinda weird? btw what does "from the pyre" even mean lol
