Gaza's Children Cry Out for Education: A Fight for Survival Amidst Ruin

Since October 2014, Gaza has been without a school. Two years on, and there is no end in sight to this crisis.

For Juwayriya Adwan, the memory of her last day at Khawla Bint al-Azwar school still lingers vividly. It was October 7th - the morning air raid sirens pierced through the corridors as the Israeli army attacked the shelter where she and her classmates were taking refuge. The sounds of explosions, laughter echoing down the halls, now a distant memory, as her school was reduced to rubble and her books burned.

The loss of education is the loss of the future itself, Adwan laments. Two years without learning has left her with little more than shattered dreams and a broken pencil. Her family lives in a crowded shelter, where they queue for water and food, struggling to survive amidst the chaos. "We don't want pity, we want action," she urges, pleading for an end to this devastating crisis.

Adwan is not alone in her plight. Naglaa Weshah, a seasoned teacher of over a decade, has seen the best of Gaza's students before the war took its toll. Her classroom was once a haven of laughter and learning but now lies in ruins. "Many of my students are gone," she laments, recalling the children who never returned from school. Their dreams of becoming doctors, artists, and teachers were snuffed out by the violence.

Sarah al-Sharif, just nine years old, has lost her childhood to war. Her parents fled Gaza when she was seven, but even their new home in Egypt offered little solace. "The sky was never quiet in Gaza," she remembers, recalling the sound of explosions that shattered her world. She longs to return to school but hopes are dwindling as the days turn into years.

Ismail Muneifah, a young boy from Gaza City, too has lost his education to war. His home and school were destroyed when he was just five, leaving him with little memory of his pre-war life. The sound of Egyptian children in uniform fills her window, an ache that echoes the longing for the lessons left undone.

In this ravaged landscape, learning is a precious gift. Informal schools have emerged as lifelines to Gaza's shattered education system. For these young survivors, even fragments of knowledge offer hope and a chance to escape the desolation. As they cling to their dreams, one thing remains certain: education will not die in Gaza - it will rise from the ashes, determined to reclaim a future that has been lost for far too long.

man this is so sad 🤕 gaza kids are literally growing up without an education... imagine if that happened in your own country? no one would sit still about it and everyone would be doing everything they can to help these kids get back on track ASAP 💪 let's make sure we're not forgetting about them 👉

I'm literally shaking thinking about all these kids who have lost their childhoods already 🤕. It's heartbreaking to think about how much learning they've missed out on and what their futures might look like now. For me, this is more than just a news story - it's a human crisis.

The stats are mind-boggling: two years without schools, two years without education... the numbers are staggering! But you know what the most heartbreaking thing is? It's not just about the kids who have lost out on learning; it's also about their families and communities who are struggling to survive in a war-torn landscape.

You see, when you take away education, you're taking away hope. These kids deserve so much more than just existing - they deserve to live, to grow, to learn, and to thrive. And that's exactly what these informal schools are trying to do. They're providing a lifeline of knowledge in the midst of chaos.

I think it's time we step up and demand action. We need to make sure that these kids have access to education, no matter what the circumstances. It's not just about their futures; it's about the future of our world. We can't keep ignoring this crisis and expecting things to magically get better on their own.

We need to come together as a global community and support these kids in any way we can. Whether it's donating resources, volunteering our time, or simply spreading awareness about this issue... every bit counts.

I'm so sorry to hear about what's happening in Gaza 🤕. This is just heartbreaking... I mean, two years without school is crazy. What's even more crazy is how broken the system is, but at least these kids are trying to pick up where they left off, right? Informal schools are a thing now, that's pretty cool? It shows that people aren't giving up on them. Education can be super powerful, like it gives you something to hold onto when everything else feels lost...

man this is just heartbreaking 🤕 can you even imagine having your school destroyed and never being able to go back to learning? the fact that there are kids like juwayriya adwan who are still holding on to their dreams despite everything that's happened... it gives me chills 😱 they're literally fighting for a future that seems lost already. we need to do something about this ASAP 💪

"Hope is not something you look back on when you're feeling good. You look back on it when you're feeling bad." 💔📚

The situation in Gaza is heartbreaking, and it's hard to imagine what these kids are going through. Losing education is like losing a part of themselves, and it's devastating that they've been denied their right to learn. The Israeli army attacks and the Palestinian families' struggles have left so many without a home or a chance at a better life.

The fact that informal schools have emerged as lifelines for these kids is a testament to the resilience of Gaza's people. They're fighting for survival, not just against their circumstances but also against the idea that education will be taken away from them.

It's time for action, and I hope that world leaders take notice of this crisis. We can't turn a blind eye to the suffering of these children. It's time to raise our voices and demand change. 🗣️

😔 this news is so heartbreaking i cant even imagine how hard its for these kids who have lost everything due to war and now their only hope is informal schools 🤕 they deserve so much better and it's our responsibility to make sure education is accessible to all especially in places like gaza where its been destroyed 🌟 but i see glimmer of hope in the fact that even fragments of knowledge are giving them strength to keep going 💪 let's raise our voices for these kids and demand action be taken to rebuild their schools and restore their education system 📚💕

Gaza's kids are literally crying out for some bloody books 📚💔, but who cares right? Like, I mean, isn't it obvious that war and conflict just make life more complicated? Can we just focus on rebuilding or something?

And btw, who needs a school when you have the internet? 🤷‍♂️ Online education is where it's at! Why shell out cash for some dusty old textbooks when you can learn about everything from the comfort of your own home (or in this case, a crowded shelter)?

I mean, I feel bad for these kids, but isn't it just a matter of time before they're all like "Meh, school's cool I guess" once things settle down? 🤔 They've got each other and their community to support them. What more do you need?

Can we please, PLEASE get some action on this whole education crisis thing instead of just feeling sorry for these kids 24/7? We're still getting our memes made here 💁‍♂️

this is just heartbreaking reading about all these kids who are growing up without an education 🤕, 2 years without learning is like, what's the point? and its not like they're even having access to basic necessities like water & food, it's a miracle they're still alive... i need some sources on this crisis tho, when did it start & how long has gaza been without a school?! 📚

Ugh, this is so sad 🤕. Like, I get that schools got destroyed and all, but two years without learning? That's just brutal. I mean, can't we just rebuild or something? It feels like no one cares about these kids' futures 😔. And what's up with the situation in Egypt? Can't they help out their Gaza refugee friends? It's not fair that these kids have to go through all this 🤦‍♀️.

🤕 This is just heartbreaking... 2 years without schools in Gaza is unacceptable. Can't believe those kids are struggling so much. It's not like they did anything wrong. Just want them to be able to learn and grow 📚💖

🤷‍♀️ Can't believe how quickly ppl forget about Gaza's kids... like they're just casualties of war 🚫. Two years without schools and no one's really holding Israel accountable 🤔? It's all about the 'cycle of violence' and not actually making a change 💪. We need to be talking about education as a human right, not just some afterthought 👎. And btw, who's the adult here? 🙄

I'm literally heartbroken when I think about kids like Juwayriya and Naglaa who have lost out on years of learning 🤯. Education is everything, especially in situations where hope seems lost 💔. These girls deserve so much better than to grow up with shattered dreams and broken pencils. Can't we just provide them with a safe and peaceful environment to learn and thrive? 🌟 I mean, what's the point of having all these resources if we're not using them to support our most vulnerable populations? 🤷‍♀️
