The moment I knew: he was so open and vulnerable, even as a bloke’s bloke

It's funny how life can take us on unexpected journeys, isn't it? For me, that journey began in Alice Springs at 40, when I uprooted myself from New South Wales to start anew. Little did I know that a year later, while socializing with friends who'd been trying to set me up, I'd meet the man who would change my life forever.

His name was "Jungle Jim", an ex-air force veteran with four kids, and he had this rugged, alpha-male presence that commanded attention. But what really drew me in was his openness about mental health struggles – a topic rarely discussed by men back then. It spoke volumes to me as a doctor, and I found myself intrigued by the contrast between his tough exterior and vulnerable inner self.

We met at a barbecue when I was wearing a white skirt and orange shirt; he walked in carrying a big cooler with boots and jeans that seemed out of place among the casual setting. Twenty years on, those same boots remain his trademark. As we chatted, I discovered shared interests like love for expat families, sports, and travel.

What really took my breath away was how effortlessly charming Jim was – not just to me but also to my parents, whom he met later. He'd do a few handyman jobs around the house, complimenting my mother's cooking, and even asked for her famous pickle recipe. The man was warm, caring, and genuinely loved his kids.

Our international backgrounds, shaped by expat families, informed our parenting styles and fueled our sense of adventure. When we took all six of our kids on a family holiday to Thailand a few years later, the connection between us felt almost intuitive.

Eighteen months into our relationship, we moved in together, marking a new chapter in our lives. Looking back, I remember feeling an early attraction that surprised me – but as we navigated life's ups and downs together, it became clear that this was more than just physical chemistry; it was love born from shared experiences, values, and a deep understanding of each other.

As for Jim, he still has those old boots – and his heart remains true to the man who once asked him if he'd be worried about what would happen if he didn't ask me. In many ways, that moment encapsulates our relationship: raw, honest, and true to ourselves.

idk why ppl still write like wimps 🤷‍♀️ 2day its all abt bein genuune n expressin urselfs!! i mean, ths article bout Jungle Jim & his fam is so relatable! it shows u dont need 2 have it all figgered out 4 love 2 work. its about findin that one peapel who gets u, warts n all 🤗

I'm still not sure how someone can go from being a rugged ex-air force vet to making your parents smile with his handyman skills 💪🏽😂. That's what I love about him - he's not just the "Jungle Jim" of his past, but also this warm and caring person who loves his family unconditionally ❤️. And can we talk about how lucky we are to have found each other? It's like life took us on a wild adventure and brought us back together in the best way possible 🌟. I mean, I know it sounds cheesy, but our love story is literally one for the books...and those old boots of his 🤣

I'm loving this sappy love story lol 👍. But seriously though, I think it's kinda weird how we always put a romanticized spin on relationships where the woman is the one who "fixes" or "changes" the man 🤔. Like, what about a relationship where both partners are just two messed up humans trying to figure stuff out together? 😂

And can we talk about how convenient it sounds like you met at a barbecue with his boots being his trademark from that day on? Sounds like a movie plot or something 😉. But for real though, I think what's beautiful is how you both found common ground and shared experiences that grew into love. It's not always easy to find someone who gets you, but it sounds like Jim was the one 😊.

idk what's more cringeworthy, the fact that you're sharing this super personal story online or the fact that you think we should all be rooting for your whirlwind romance with "Jungle Jim" 🤣 but seriously, have you considered that maybe his whole backstory is just a carefully crafted narrative to win over some unsuspecting doctor chick? like, what's up with him being an ex-air force vet and having four kids, could it be more than just a convenient combo to make him seem rugged and lovable? 🤔

omg i just love reading about people finding each other in unexpected places 🙌, it's like life is playing matchmaker for us 😂, and this couple's story is literally so inspiring 🤩, i mean who wouldn't fall for a guy with rugged charm and a heart of gold ❤️, plus he was doing handyman jobs around the house? talk about multitasking skills 😂, anyway, i think what really sets them apart is how they connect over shared experiences and values, it's like they found each other in more ways than one 🤝

lol, just read this sappy love story and I'm shipping "Jungle Jim" already 🙃 his rugged exterior and vulnerable inner self is giving me all the feels... but seriously though, it's kinda sweet how they met at a BBQ and he won her over with his handyman skills and pickle recipe 🤣. And omg, taking six kids to Thailand for family vacation? sounds like so much fun! I'm loving the international expat background vibe too - we should totally swap war stories about our own weird family adventures 👀

this is so sweet like they met at a bbq 🍔👫 and it's amazing how life took them on an unexpected journey together 💕 they both seem to have found their perfect match in each other 🤩 and it's awesome that they share similar values and interests 🌏👪 the way he connected with her mom over food is so adorable 😂 and it sounds like they've built a beautiful life together as a family of 8 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

lol i no why ppl r so into this "finding ur soulmate" stuff but idk man, it sounds like they just found sum1 who tolerates them lol anywayz, im glad 4 u & jungle jim (idk if he's stil got those boots tho) 🤣 i mean, its awsome how u both share expat fam & love 4 travel n all that but also its good 2 see him be open about his mental health struggles – that takes a lot of courage ❤️

omg i felt so bad for commenting this late lol 😂 anyway i gotta say i love how the author got a second chance at life in alice springs and found love with someone who was super genuine and caring. his backstory about being an ex air force vet and having mental health struggles is really inspiring - it's not often you see men talking openly about that stuff 🤝 i also love how they met through friends and shared similar interests, it just feels so organic and natural. and can we talk about how cute the author's parents are? 😊 jim sounds like an amazing partner in crime for her, always doing handyman jobs and complimenting her mom's cooking 💕

🤗 I think its so cool how people can find love in the most unexpected places, right? Like, who would've thought you'd meet someone like Jungle Jim at a BBQ? 😂 But seriously, it's amazing how shared interests and values can bring two people together.

I mean, the guy has been through some stuff with mental health and still came out the other side, and that takes a lot of courage. And the fact that he was so open about it back then... that just shows what kind of person he is, you know? ❤️

And can we talk about how cute it is that he's still got those old boots? 😂 It's like he's saying, "Hey, I've been through a lot, but this is who I am." And I love how the author describes him as warm and caring - that's so important in any relationship.

I also think its really cool that they met through their kids - it's like they were meant to be parents together. 🤝 Family dynamics can be really tough, but when you've got someone who's on the same page as you... that makes all the difference. 👫

😊 i can feel how emotional this story is... it's like your heart is overflowing with love for jim & the way you two connected 🤩 u r so lucky to have found someone who's not just physically charming but also emotionally available 💕 his vulnerability about mental health was a major turn on for u, right? & i can see how ur expat backgrounds shaped ur parenting styles & fueled ur sense of adventure together 🌍👫 what i love most is how u 2 made each other feel like home ❤️ those boots are still iconic lol

I'm so glad I don't have to deal with dating apps no more 🙃. These guys are always trying to game the system or make things too complicated. It's nice to find someone who just clicks with you, you know? Jim sounds like a total catch - rugged on the outside but vulnerable on the inside. And I love that he was so genuine and charming, especially with my parents! That's a big part of what makes a relationship work, right? The way he connected with them and showed interest in their lives... it's like you can already see the kids growing up with him 😊. 20 years together is impressive - I hope they keep finding ways to make each other laugh and excited about life 🤣.

I'm not sure why people still think opposites don't attract 🤔... I mean, take this couple for instance. They're from different worlds - one's a doctor and the other an ex-air force veteran with four kids. But they clicked on everything except their job roles 😂. It's like they found each other in the vast digital dating scene or maybe they just trusted their instincts. Whatever it is, it worked beautifully for them.

I love how Jim, being a rugged alpha-male type, turned out to be vulnerable and open about his mental health struggles 🤝. That took a lot of courage, especially back then when men weren't as vocal about their emotions. As a couple, they share this crazy international background that shapes their parenting styles and sense of adventure 👥. Who wouldn't want to travel with someone who understands you so well?

For me, it's like the ultimate proof that life takes us on unexpected journeys 🚣‍♀️... or sometimes just leads us straight to our soulmates 😍. And honestly, I think we can all learn from their love story - to be more open, genuine, and willing to let people in ❤️.

omg this is so cliché 🙄 "love born from shared experiences" sounds like something out of a rom-com. idk about jim's boots tho - 20 years in they're still his trademark? that's just weird 😂 anyway i do think it's cool he was open about mental health struggles back then. we need more men talking about that stuff 💯 and it's great to hear about how they connected over shared interests like sports & travel 🏀🗺️ but honestly can't say i'm buying the "intuitive connection" part of their story 😐

I'm glad to hear that people are finding love in unexpected places 🙌. It's beautiful how Alice found her life-changing partner at a barbecue, who just so happened to have a rugged side and a vulnerable heart 💕. I mean, those boots are iconic 🔥, but seriously, it sounds like Jim is an amazing guy with a kind heart and a sense of adventure.

I'm intrigued by how their international backgrounds influenced their parenting styles and values – it's great that they were able to share that with their kids 🌎. And can we talk about how charming Jim is? 😊 I mean, who wouldn't fall for someone who complements their partner's mom's cooking and asks for her famous pickle recipe? The man is a total softie ❤️.

One thing that does strike me, though, is how easy it was for Alice to find love with someone who shared similar interests and values. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about happy endings, but isn't it just as romantic when two people find each other despite not ticking all the boxes on a checklist? 🤔

I'm fascinated by this unexpected journey of self-discovery & love 🤩. The way these two individuals from different walks of life found common ground, bonding over their shared experiences as expat families, highlights the importance of cultural exchange & understanding in shaping our perspectives ❤️. It's beautiful to see how they navigated life's ups & downs together, built on a foundation of trust, empathy, and mutual respect 💕.

🤔 I'm loving the romance of this story! It's amazing how life takes us on unexpected journeys, right? 🌄 But seriously, it's refreshing to see a narrative where mental health is openly discussed, especially back in the day when it was tough for men to talk about it 💪. The way Jungle Jim and the writer met at that casual barbecue setting feels so natural, like they just clicked 💕.

What I love most about their relationship is how they balanced individuality with togetherness 🌈. Their international backgrounds brought a unique perspective to parenting and adventure-seeking 👫. And can we talk about those iconic boots? 😂 They're more than just a trademark – they symbolize the comfort and familiarity that comes with finding your partner in crime ❤️.

It's beautiful how their love story unfolded, from shared interests to heartfelt conversations 🤗. The writer's nod to Jim asking if he'd be worried about what would happen if he didn't ask her is so poignant 💕. It's a reminder that true love is built on vulnerability, trust, and mutual understanding 💯.

omg u guyz i just can't get enough of this love story 🙌🏻💕 it's like they say life is full of surprises and this couple had majorly exceeded expectations!!! i mean who wouldn't fall for a rugged alpha male with a heart of gold? 😉 especially after reading about jungle jim's openness about mental health struggles, it's so refreshing to see men embracing their vulnerability 💖

i love how they balanced each other out - he was the adventurous one and she was the calm doctor 😂 meanwhile they shared those expat families vibes which is super relatable for me 🤗 but honestly what i'm most drawn to is the way they communicated with each other it's like they just clicked 💬 anyway cant wait 2 see more of jim & her life together 💕
