‘The New Big 5’: Wildlife photography book turns the lens on animals at risk | CNN

Graeme Green, a renowned wildlife photographer, is on a mission to change the narrative around conservation. Traditionally, the term "Big Five" referred to the most elusive and challenging animals to hunt in Africa - lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, and buffalo. However, Green has reimagined this concept by creating the "New Big Five," a global photography project that highlights iconic endangered species from around the world.

In 2021, an online poll was conducted where over 50,000 people voted for their top five animals they would like to photograph in the wild. The winning animals were - elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, and tiger. These five animals have been selected not only because of their striking appearance but also due to the fact that they are facing significant threats to their survival.

The book "The New Big 5: A Global Photography Project For Endangered Wildlife" brings together stunning images from some of the world's most renowned wildlife photographers, including Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen. Essays written by conservationists and activists like Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu add an extra layer of depth to the project.

For Green, this book is more than just a photography project; it's a call to action on various environmental issues such as habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change that are pushing many species to extinction. The book aims to inspire people around the world to take action towards conservation.

Green believes that these images are not only beautiful but also convey a powerful message about the state of our planet's wildlife. He notes that we have a window of time during which we can heal some of the damage we've inflicted on the natural world, but only if we work together and take immediate action now.

The book features photographs from various ecosystems around the globe, showcasing not just these five iconic animals but also highlighting other endangered species like bees to blue whales. Green emphasizes that these species are the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the alarming rate at which nature is declining worldwide.

The publication of "The New Big 5" coincides with a growing awareness about conservation and environmental issues. As renowned conservationist Jane Goodall said, she hopes the photographs will lead people into the wonderful worlds of these iconic species and encourage others to get involved in helping create a world where wildlife can flourish for future generations to enjoy.

"The New Big 5: A Global Photography Project For Endangered Wildlife" is now available from April 4, 2023.

🤔 I'm kinda disappointed that the online poll was just 50k people or whatever... feels like a tiny sample size considering how big of an issue conservation is 📊. And why did they only ask 5 animals? Shouldn't it be, like, 10 or 20 or something more diverse 🤷‍♂️. I mean, I love elephants and polar bears and all that, but what about the ones we don't see as much in the news? Like... have you seen any good shots of okapi? 🦒 those guys are pretty cool too 😎

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s really cool that Graeme Green is trying to change the narrative around conservation by creating this "New Big Five" project 🐠💚. It's like, we're so used to thinking about the term in relation to Africa, but there are so many other amazing animals out there that need our attention too. And I love how he's getting a bunch of different photographers involved and including essays from conservationists – it feels really inclusive and comprehensive 📸🌎. Plus, the idea that we have a window of time to fix some of the damage we've done to the environment is just so powerful 💪. It makes me want to pick up my camera (or in this case, go on safari) and start snapping pics for conservation!

I'm so stoked about this new project! 🤩 The idea of the "New Big Five" is genius - it's not just about saving these iconic animals, but also raising awareness about all the other endangered species that need our help 🌎💚 I mean, have you seen those polar bear pics? Mind. Blown. 😲 Ami Vitale and Steve McCurry are total legends when it comes to wildlife photography - their work is simply breathtaking! 📸 But what really gets me is how they're using this platform to talk about climate change and habitat loss - we need more voices like this speaking out on these issues 💥 The fact that Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu are involved in the book is just a bonus - these women are total heroes for wildlife conservation 🌟 We can make a difference, folks! Let's get behind projects like this and start making some noise about saving our planet's precious wildlife 🐒💪 #TheNewBigFive #WildlifeConservation #SustainabilityMatters

man... thinkin bout the state of our planet 🌎 it's wild to me how we're losin so many incredible species... the idea of "The New Big Five" just hits u right? like, yeah we got these iconic animals but we gotta consider all the others too 🐝🐳 there's a whole ecosystem involved here & if we wanna change the narrative around conservation, we gotta go beyond just a few charismatic creatures

i think Graeme Green is onto somethin with this project... it's not just about takin pics, it's about sparkin awareness & gettin ppl to care 📸💡 but at the same time, it's also a reminder that we're runnin outta time, ya know? we gotta take action now or risk losin so much of what makes this planet beautiful & unique

anyway... i just feel like we're at this crossroads where we can choose to either keep goin down the path of destruction or try to find a new way 🤔💖 gotta be careful not to just point out the problems, but also offer some hope & solutions 💪

I'm not sure if this is gonna make a difference, but I think it's kinda cool that some famous photographers are getting together to raise awareness about endangered species 🌟. But let's be real, we've seen all the "save the planet" campaigns before and it always feels like just a PR stunt 😒. Still, maybe if people see these gorgeous pics of elephants and polar bears in danger, they'll actually care enough to take action 🤞.

I'm not holding my breath though. We know how hard it is to change people's minds, especially when they're more concerned with their social media feeds than actual environmental issues 📱. And let's not forget, this whole "New Big Five" thing might just be a marketing ploy for some photography book or magazine 📚.

But hey, even if it doesn't have any real-world impact, at least we'll have some pretty pictures to look at 😊. And who knows, maybe some of these photographers will inspire someone to make a difference 💪. But I'm not counting on it...

omg u guyz i cant even rite w/o getting emoshed thinking bout this new book "The New Big 5". its like gr8 to c ppl like graeme green takin action 4 our planet's wildlife 🌎📸 he's reimagined the whole big five thing & its now about endangered animals from all around the world - elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, & tiger are the top 5! 🐘💪 i no how hard it is 2 photograph these amazing creatures in the wild.

i think its super impoant 4 us to take action on habitat loss, poaching, pollution, & climate change or we'll b losin species left & right 🌪️🔥 jane goodall's essay in this book tho 💕 is like, totally mind-blowing! it's a call 2 arms. let's all do our part & help create a world where wildlife thrives 4 future gens 🐾💖

I'm all for Graeme Green's "New Big Five" project 🌟 but I gotta say, it feels a bit like we're just scratching the surface here. I mean, with over 50,000 people voting, you'd think these five animals would be more, well, big than that. And what about some of the other amazing species out there? Bees are basically on the brink of extinction and yet they don't make the cut 🐝😬. Don't get me wrong, elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, and tiger are all incredible creatures but isn't it time we widened our scope a bit more? 🌎
