President Donald Trump has commuted former Rep. George Santos' prison sentence, describing him as a "rogue" but also hailing him as a "Great Hero." The move comes after numerous appeals from those advocating for Santos' release.
Trump's decision, posted on Truth Social, stated that Santos had been subjected to "horrible mistreatment" in solitary confinement and therefore deserved immediate release. He expressed his support for the former congressman, wishing him well for the rest of his life.
Santos was initially arrested in 2023 on federal charges related to wire fraud, money laundering, and theft, before eventually pleading guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. He was sentenced to 87 months in prison and ordered to pay a fine, beginning his sentence in New Jersey last July.
A polarizing figure in Congress, Santos' time in office was marked by controversy after controversy, including significant discrepancies in his resume and personal backstory that were uncovered before the election. A House Ethics Committee investigation later found substantial evidence of his misuse of campaign funds for personal purposes, further contributing to his eventual ouster from office last December.
Santos' lawyer stated that he is "overjoyed" and "appreciative" of Trump's decision, describing his original sentence as "draconian."
