Donald Trump is backing Andrew Cuomo's bid to become New York City's mayor, warning that if Zohran Mamdani wins, it will be a disaster for the city. In a tweet posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump said: "It's my strong conviction that New York City will be a Complete and Total Economic and Social Disaster should Mamdani win."
Trump made the remarks just hours before polling stations were set to open in the closely-watched election. He urged his supporters to vote for Cuomo, who is running as an independent after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary.
Trump claimed that Cuomo, a Democrat with a record of success, would be better than Mamdani, a Communist with no experience and a history of complete failure. Trump stated that if Mamdani wins, "it's highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required."
Meanwhile, Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa was struggling to catch up in the polls, trailing behind both Cuomo and Mamdani. Trump suggested that a vote for Sliwa would be equivalent to voting for Mamdani, saying: "Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job."
Mamdani, who is running on a platform of free buses, rent freezes, and universal childcare, warned that if Cuomo wins, the city will descend into darkness, forcing many of its neighbors to flee. Mamdani told his supporters that Trump believes Cuomo would be the best mayor for his administration, not for New Yorkers.
The mayoral election has captured global attention, with a record 735,317 early votes cast over nine days. The stakes are high as Mamdani looks to become the first Muslim, first person born in Africa, and first person of South Asian descent to lead New York City.
