US President Donald Trump has expressed his desire to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during a forthcoming trip to Asia. The US president stated this while departing for the region, saying he was "open" to meeting with Kim if it would put an end to speculation about such a meeting.
Trump's interest in meeting with Kim comes after the two leaders first met in 2019 when Trump visited North Korea, marking the first time a sitting US president had set foot on the country. However, no agreements were reached during their talks, and tensions have since risen due to North Korea's continued nuclear testing activities.
During his recent visit to South Korea, Kim Jong Un stated that he was willing to meet with Trump again if the US halted its pursuit of a "absurd" demand for North Korea to surrender its nuclear capabilities. Trump has said that he believes North Korea is a "nuclear power," and Kim's comments have suggested that he remains open to engaging in dialogue with the US.
Trump will be visiting several countries during his Asia trip, including Malaysia and Japan, where he plans to meet with world leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping amid ongoing trade tensions between the US and China. He is expected to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit in Malaysia before heading to South Korea for the Apec forum.
However, a senior US official has stated that a meeting with Kim Jong Un is not currently scheduled, citing the fact that Trump's previous invitation on social media came as an unexpected gesture. Nevertheless, there is still a possibility of such a meeting occurring during Trump's trip, and South Korean officials have expressed their willingness to facilitate any talks between the two leaders.

. Last time they met in 2019 didn't exactly go as planned. They talked, but no one came out with anything concrete. Trump's all like "let's meet again" and Kim's all like "fine, we'll talk". I guess it's good that there are still some people open to dialogue, right?

I guess it's good that there are still some people open to dialogue, right? But what about the nukes? Trump says North Korea is a "nuclear power", but if they're really gonna give up those things, that'd be a huge deal. And China's got their own issues with trade and all... I'm not sure how this all shakes out. Will we get anything done or just more talk-talk-talk?

I'm sure the audience would love to see those two go head-to-head on nuclear capabilities... and who knows, maybe even trade some memes about their haircuts. Anyway, gotta keep the tension between them low, or else it's gonna be a real "nuclear option" situation

I know it was a bit of a wild card when he first visited North Korea in 2019, but I think both sides are just trying to figure things out. Like, Trump believes NK is a "nuclear power" and Kim's all about ditching those nukes
