Trump’s visit to Malaysia met with protests over war in Gaza

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Kuala Lumpur's Independence Square on Sunday to express their opposition to US President Donald Trump's visit to Malaysia for the ASEAN summit. The demonstrators, many of whom were clad in keffiyehs and carrying signs that read "Free, Free Palestine," chanted slogans such as "We are all Palestinians" and "Boycott Israel."

The protests came ahead of Trump's scheduled attendance at the 47th ASEAN summit, where he was expected to sign a ceasefire deal between Cambodia and Thailand and announce several trade deals. However, the visit had been met with widespread criticism from pro-Palestinian groups in Malaysia who oppose US President Trump’s support for Israel’s war on Gaza.

One protester, Asma Hanim Mahoud, traveled over 300 kilometers from her home state of Kelantan to attend the demonstration. She described Trump as a "genocide enabler" and said that without him, Israel could not continue to kill children and civilians in Gaza.

Mahoud was dismayed when authorities moved the protest from Ampang Park, where protesters had gathered earlier in the week, to Independence Square. Police expected around 1,000-1500 protesters but reported a turnout of hundreds.

The demonstration drew a diverse crowd of people who opposed US foreign policy in the Middle East and elsewhere. Choo Chon Kai, leader of the Socialist Party of Malaysia, said he attended the rally as part of an international day of solidarity with Palestinians and all those affected by US imperialism.

Choo also expressed disappointment that the protest had been moved from its original location near the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre where Trump was scheduled to meet other leaders. He noted that protesters were forced to take alternative locations after authorities took steps to prevent them from proceeding.

The protests came as tensions in Gaza continued, despite a ceasefire agreement brokered by Trump earlier this month. Both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of breaching the truce.

man 😊 i feel bad for trump he's gonna get roasted hard on this one...but at the same time gotta respect the protesters and their passion 300k km from kelantan to kuala lumpur is no joke asma hamoud's words are super powerful we need more people like her speaking out against injustice 🌎 it's interesting that a trade deal between cambodia & thailand is also on the agenda what does trump's visit really mean for malaysia & the region? maybe we should be focusing on finding common ground instead of boycotts and protests 🤔

I feel bad for these protesters, you know? They're just trying to stand up for what they believe in and be heard. It's like when I was at university and we had a debate on free speech vs censorship... 🤔

Anyway, what struck me about this protest is that it highlights the complexity of international relations and the impact our leaders can have on global issues. Trump's visit to Malaysia might seem like just another diplomatic trip, but it shows how actions in one country can affect others.

It got me thinking about the power of collective action and solidarity. When people come together to support a cause they believe in, it can be incredibly powerful. Asma Hanim Mahoud's words really stuck with me – we all have a role to play in speaking out against injustices and advocating for peace.

The fact that the protest was moved from its original location is also a reminder of how quickly our rights can be taken away when authorities try to silence us. 🚫

It's a tough world out there, but it's moments like these that remind us of the importance of staying vigilant, speaking truth to power, and supporting one another in the pursuit of justice and peace. 💖

can't believe trump is still getting hate like that lol... i mean, i get it, he's made some questionable moves on middle east politics but come on, doesn't everyone deserve a chance to meet him face-to-face? 🤷‍♀️ anyway, i'm all for protesters expressing their opinions and standing up for what they believe in, even if it means showing solidarity with palestine. the fact that asma traveled so far just to be at the rally is, like, totally inspiring 💖 and i love how choo mentioned an international day of solidarity - we should do more of that! 🌎

I'm kinda surprised by how many people turned out to protest Trump's visit 🤔. I mean, I get why they're upset - he has been pretty vocal about supporting Israel in the past, which doesn't sit well with pro-Palestinian groups. It's just weird that so many Malaysians showed up to show their disapproval though... I guess it just goes to show how strong the opinions are on this topic 💬.

Trump's visit to Malaysia is gonna be super awkward 🤦‍♂️. Pro-Palestinian groups here are really vocal about their opposition to his support for Israel, and rightfully so 🤝. I mean, can't we just focus on getting a peaceful resolution in Gaza already? 😩 The protests might not have gotten as big as expected, but it's still awesome that people are speaking out against US foreign policy in the Middle East.

I'm not surprised authorities moved the protest to Independence Square, though - they don't want anyone disrupting Trump's meeting with other leaders 🚫. It's like they think we're all just gonna chill while Israel keeps bombing Gaza and nobody does anything about it 😡. Choo Chon Kai is totally right that this is an international day of solidarity, but I wish more people would be taking a stand against US imperialism too 🌎.

It's not just about Palestine, though - this is about how the US treats its allies and enemies alike, with all the double standards and biased policies 🤯. Anyway, I hope Trump gets some pushback for his visit, even if it's just a bunch of chants in Independence Square 😂

omg I'm so with these protesters 🤝 they're not just fighting for Palestine, they're also speaking out against US imperialism and the harm it causes in the Middle East. it's crazy that Trump is still supporting Israel's war on Gaza despite all the criticism from pro-Palestinian groups. Asma Hanim Mahoud's words are so powerful - she's right, Trump is basically enabling genocide by backing Israel's actions. 🤯 it's like, we're supposed to be allies of democracy and human rights, but instead, the US is supporting a regime that's causing so much suffering. 🌎 I just hope the authorities understand the gravity of this situation and don't just move protesters around like they're pawns on a chessboard 😡

come on man, what's the big deal about trump's visit anyway? he's just gonna shake some hands and sign some papers... meanwhile, ppl in gaza r still dyin. it's not all about trump, it's about israel's actions & the us supporting them 🤷‍♂️

man I dont get why trump has to come to malaysia for that summit 🤷‍♂️ it feels like more politics than actual work getting done 😒 especially when ppl in gaza are still livin thru this genocide situation 🌪️ i mean whats the point of signing a ceasefire if nobody enforces it? 🚫 and these protests r not just about trump, its about how us foreign policy is affecting other countries & ppl around the world 💥 like what would happen if the whole world united against that kind of stuff? 🤝 we should be workin together 2 solve these problems instead of makin more drama 🎭

I gotta say, I'm kinda curious about Trump's visit to Malaysia... 🤔 He's been getting a lot of backlash from pro-Palestine groups here, but on the flip side, some folks see his efforts as a way to bring peace and stability to the region. Like, yeah, Gaza's still got its issues, but isn't it cool that he's trying to broker a ceasefire deal? 🤞 And let's be real, trade deals are always a good thing... for everyone involved, right? 😊 I mean, I'm not saying Trump's all good or anything (he can be kinda divisive), but sometimes you just gotta give the dude some credit. Plus, it's not like he's getting a free pass just 'cause of his celebrity status... although, that might help him out a bit in the eyes of some people 😂

🤝 just saw some crazy news about ppl protesting against trump's visit to malaysia 🌴👊 it's like, i get why ppl are upset about us supporting israel but moving the protest from one spot to another feels kinda unfair 🙄 especially when ppl traveled far & wide to be there 🚶‍♀️ and now they're stuck in this huge square 🤯 can't wait to see what happens next 💪

I'm just so confused about what's going on here 🤔... I mean, I get why people would be upset about US President Trump visiting Malaysia, especially with all the criticism he's gotten for supporting Israel. But it seems like a lot of the protesters were more focused on the Palestinian issue than the fact that Trump is from the US? Like, isn't his country even involved in this conflict? 🤷‍♀️ And what about the trade deals he's supposed to sign? Are those not important too?

And can we talk about how weird it was for authorities to move the protest to a different location at the last minute? Like, they knew there were going to be hundreds of people showing up and then suddenly you're like "oh no, let's move them" 😒. I feel bad for Choo Chon Kai and all the other organizers who had to scramble to find new places to hold their rallies.

But at the end of the day, it just seems so... complicated 🤯... Like, everyone has a different opinion on what Trump's visit means for Malaysia or Palestine or whatever. Can we just have a calm conversation about this instead of all the shouting and protesting? 🤗

😕 I'm actually kinda surprised to see all these people showing up at the ASEAN summit in Malaysia to protest US President Trump's visit 🤔. I mean, I get it, Trump's been making some pretty unpopular moves on the Israel-Palestine situation, but didn't they think about the timing? Like, the ceasefire deal was just agreed upon by Trump and Cambodia/Thailand... it feels kinda awkward for all these protesters to be there 🤷‍♂️. And honestly, I wish they'd taken some of those same signs and banners to the actual summit, instead of just showing up at Independence Square 🤦‍♂️.

I'm not sure what's more concerning, Trump's visit to Malaysia or that people are taking out their frustrations on Israeli-Palestinian issues in such a way. I mean, I get why there is tension between the US and Palestinians, but jumping all over it like this might make things worse.

So, can we talk about how we know Israel's war on Gaza isn't all one-sided? Like, what are the numbers on civilian casualties, you know? And Trump's role in it too. I need some context before I start cheering or booing...

man, trump's visit is like, super contentious here... people are really upset about his support for israel, you know? it's not just about palestine, it's about the US being all extra aggressive in the middle east. and now, he's showing up to sign a ceasefire deal like everything's okay? no way, man. protesters were right to speak out against him... they're just trying to bring attention to the fact that israel's actions are super problematic. i'm not surprised authorities moved the protest though, they always try to shut down dissenting voices

I don’t usually comment but I feel really bad for these protesters who traveled so far just to express their opinion... it's like they're speaking truth to power, you know? They're not trying to be confrontational or anything, they just want to stand up for what they believe in. The whole US President Trump thing is a bit weird considering the controversy surrounding his stance on Israel... I mean, come on, Gaza situation is still super tense and he's over here signing deals like everything's cool? 🤔

It's interesting that the protest got moved from one spot to another... it feels like they're being watched all the time. Choo Chon Kai saying that he attended the rally as part of an international day of solidarity with Palestinians and all those affected by US imperialism makes a lot of sense, given how politics can be super complex and messy... 💯

I don't know, maybe I'm just a simple guy, but it feels like there's always some kind of conflict going on somewhere in the world. These protesters might not have gotten the recognition they deserved, but hey, at least they tried to make their voices heard... 🗣️

🌟 I'm not surprised to see people standing up against US President Trump's visit to Malaysia 🤔. It shows that there are still many Malaysians who care deeply about social justice issues like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict 💖. Asma Hanim Mahoud's words really stuck with me, it's heartbreaking to think that children are dying in Gaza because of the conflict 🤕. But you know what? This protest also shows that people from all walks of life can come together to make a difference 🌈. I wish more Malaysians could have attended and expressed their voices 😔. Still, I'm hopeful that this movement will inspire change 💪.

man this trump guy is still causing trouble everywhere he goes 🤦‍♂️, like what's up with these protests in malaysia? they're all about freedom for palestine but it's weird that everyone's wearing keffiyehs and holding signs against israel... shouldn't we be more united against the whole trump thing rather than splitting hairs over a particular country 🤔, anyway, i feel bad for mahoud though, 300 km journey just to voice her opinion - that's dedication 💖, still, it's all about the politics, right? trade deals and ceasefire agreements... can't we just focus on making things better for everyone instead of fighting over tiny differences? 🤷‍♂️

man i'm so down with these protesters 🤝 they're speaking truth to power and standing up for their rights it's not right that trump is getting all this praise for just being friends with israel 🙅‍♂️ like how can we justify supporting a country that's killing innocent people in gaza? the fact that ppl are taking time off work or traveling from far away to attend this protest shows they're serious about making their voices heard, kudos to emasahanim for her bravery and all the others who came out 🤝

Umm what's going on here? People are protesting Trump's visit but most of them are actually super pro-Palestine 🤔 like they're saying we gotta hate Israel? Come on, isn't it about time we started focusing on our own problems in Malaysia instead of getting all caught up in global conflicts? I mean I get that the US is making some questionable moves, but do we really need to be the ones leading the charge against Israel too? 🤷‍♂️ And by the way, can't these protesters just chill for a sec and let Trump have his meeting without causing a scene every five seconds?
