A United Airlines flight made an emergency landing in Salt Lake City last week after pilots discovered a crack in one layer of the windshield during cruise. The incident, which occurred on Thursday as the Boeing 737-8 jet was en route from Denver to Los Angeles, raised concerns about the safety of air travel.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the windscreen, which is part of a multilayer design intended to function even if one layer is damaged, is being sent to the NTSB lab for further examination. The investigators are currently working to determine if something struck the windshield mid-flight and what that object was.
The NTSB will be speaking with the pilots about their observations during the incident, reviewing available flight voice and data recorder details, and gathering radar, weather, and other relevant data from the National Weather Service and other sources. The investigation is ongoing, but it's unclear when a full report will be released.
Passengers on board the flight, which was United Airlines Flight 1093, were safely transferred to another aircraft after landing in Salt Lake City, with no reported injuries or fatalities. There were 134 passengers and six crew members on board.
The incident has raised questions about the reliability of modern air travel, particularly given that much of the NTSB's communications staff is currently furloughed due to government shutdowns.
