US accuses South Africa military of 'cosying up to Iran'

The US government has accused South Africa's military of "cosying up" to Iran by refusing to expel Iranian warships from its waters during a recent joint naval exercise.

Washington claims that the South African Defence Ministry ignored orders from President Cyril Ramaphosa to ask Iran to leave, and instead chose to stand with Tehran. The US embassy in Johannesburg described the move as "unconscionable" given that Iran has been brutally suppressing protests in its own country.

This criticism comes at a time when tensions are running high between South Africa and the United States over human rights issues in Iran.

South African Defence Minister Angie Motshekga has denied any wrongdoing, stating that President Ramaphosa's instructions had been clearly communicated to all parties concerned, agreed upon and to be implemented and adhered to as such.

The row highlights strained relations between South Africa and the US, which have been simmering over issues like human rights in Iran and other regional concerns.

OMG what's going on with these two countries 🀯?! I mean, I get why the US is mad but come on, South Africa needs to stand up for itself ya know? We can't just let the world dictate how we interact with others, that's not how it works πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. And yeah, Iran's human rights situation is super concerning, but so are ours in other parts of the world 🌎. Can't we all just try to get along and resolve our differences peacefully? πŸ€—

OMG, this is soooo worrying 🀯! I mean, can you blame the SA military for not wanting to kick out those Iranian warships? It's not like they're just going to roll over because of some US Embassy tantrums πŸ˜’. And what's with the US being all judgy about Iran suppressing protests in its own country? That's a super sensitive topic πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.

I feel like SA is trying to balance its relationships with all these countries, and it's just getting messy πŸ’”. The fact that Angie Motshekga is sticking by her story makes me trust her more πŸ’―. We need to be careful not to get caught up in US politics and start judging our own leaders based on what they're saying πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ.

It'd be great if the US could just chill and have a constructive conversation with SA about their differences instead of being all confrontational πŸ˜’. I mean, can't we all just get along? πŸ’–

I'm not sure what's going on with these two countries πŸ€”. One minute they're partners in naval exercises, next minute they're at odds... it just doesn't add up 🚫. I mean, South Africa's got its own issues to deal with, but I get why the US is upset about Iran - we all know how bad things are going on over there πŸ˜”.

I'm not taking sides or anything, but can we talk about the fact that both countries have a history of being involved in human rights stuff? It feels like they're just piling on each other πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. And what's with the US embassy saying it's "unconscionable" ? Is that even a real word? πŸ˜‚.

Anyway, I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this whole thing plays out πŸ•°οΈ. One thing for sure is that South Africa's got some explaining to do πŸ’¬.

πŸ€” I mean, think about it... 🌊 The fact that SA's military is standing up for Iran during a naval exercise might just be seen as a bold move to assert their own independence on the world stage πŸ’ͺ? I know, it sounds counterintuitive, but hear me out! πŸ“’ If they're not expelling Iranian warships, maybe they're actually trying to create space for other nations to engage with Iran in a more constructive way? 🀝 It's like SA is saying, "Hey, we're not going to take sides here... yet." πŸ’ Maybe this whole thing will lead to some unexpected diplomatic breakthroughs? 🌈 Wouldn't it be awesome if the US and SA could find common ground on human rights issues in Iran? 🌎

I'm low-key surprised that SA's military stood up for Iran in a time when tensions are running high πŸ€”πŸ’ͺ. I think it's great that they're taking a strong stance against the US accusations, especially considering how harshly the US has been criticizing human rights in Iran πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. It's like, can't we all just get along? πŸ˜’ At the same time, I'm worried about how this might affect our relations with the US - maybe it'll bring some much-needed clarity to their criticisms of SA πŸ‘€. Either way, I'm rooting for SA's sovereignty and self-determination πŸ’₯! #TeamSA #IndependentThoughts #DiplomacyMatters

omg i cant even believe this 🀯! us vs south africa is getting SO intense rn!! i mean, i get it that south africa and iran might be allies or whatever, but come on usa u gotta stand up for the rights of ppl in iran!!! i dont blame south africa 4 standing with iran tho, we all no what's really goin on there πŸ€•. minister motshekga sounds sooo reasonable btw πŸ‘. lets just say im keepin a close eye on dis whole thing and cant wait 2 see how it unfolds πŸ€”πŸ’₯

I'm not sure why the US is making a big deal about this... they're always talking about freedom and democracy, but it seems to me that their main concern is keeping Iran from having friends πŸ˜’. I mean, what's wrong with South Africa choosing to stand with another country in its region? It's like they're saying "we don't want you to have allies" πŸ€”.

And can we talk about the hypocrisy of all this? The US has been all over the place when it comes to backing human rights in different countries... sometimes you support them, sometimes you don't πŸ‘€. I'm not sure what's more concerning, South Africa's decision or the US' double standards πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.

I also wonder if there's more to this story than we're being told πŸ€‘. Maybe South Africa and Iran are just trying to strengthen their economic ties in the region? I guess only time will tell πŸ•°οΈ. One thing for sure, though: this whole situation is a perfect example of how complicated international politics can get 🌎πŸ’₯.

I think it's kinda harsh on SA for refusing to kick out Iranian warships πŸ€”... I mean, we gotta understand that President Ramaphosa is trying to build relationships with countries that might not always see eye-to-eye with the US 🌎. It's not like they were secretly working with Iran or anything πŸ˜‚. And from what I've seen, SA's got a good track record of being independent and doing its own thing – no need for the US to dictate how they should conduct their foreign policy βš–οΈ. The row over human rights in Iran is valid, don't get me wrong 🀝, but maybe we shouldn't be too quick to judge South Africa's stance on this one? Let's not forget that SA's got its own history with the US – it's complicated 😊. I'm all for maintaining good relations with countries around the world, as long as it doesn't come at the expense of our own sovereignty πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦.

OMG, I'm literally torn about this 🀯... Like, if you're against Iran's human rights record, how can you blame SA for standing up to the US on this? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ On one hand, it does seem kinda weird that they wouldn't ask Iran to leave - but then again, I'm not sure if it was really the SA gov's fault... Maybe they just didn't feel like rocking the boat πŸ˜’ And what's with the timing of all this? πŸ€” Is it a big coincidence that tensions are high between SA and the US right now? Idk, man...

omg I'm so disappointed in South Africa rn πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ they're literally cosying up to Iran who's being super brutal with their protests? it doesn't make sense to me... I mean I know we should respect other countries' sovereignty but come on, this is like a human rights issue and the US is trying to bring it to light and South Africa just ignores them? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I'm not sure what's going on with President Ramaphosa and his government, but if they're telling one side of the story and then doing the opposite... it's just confusing πŸ€”. And I feel for the US embassy in Johannesburg, they're trying to speak out about this human rights issue and South Africa is being all like "nope, we don't care" πŸ˜’.

I know some people might say that South Africa has its own issues with poverty and corruption, but shouldn't that be more pressing than cosying up to Iran? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I guess it's hard to say for sure without more info, but this whole thing just seems super shady to me πŸ€”.

πŸ€” so the US is saying that SA just went against their orders on purpose? how reliable is a source that's gonna make a claim like that without some actual proof or video evidence? i need to see more context here. also, what exactly were these "clearly communicated instructions" from Ramaphosa? did someone record the conversation or take notes? this sounds like a pretty big deal and we shouldn't be jumping to conclusions just yet 🚫

what a crazy situation this is 🀯 i mean, i was reading about this days after it all went down and its wild that south africa basically stood up to the us on this one. i get why the us is mad tho, its not cool that iran is still being super repressive in their own country. but at the same time, im surprised south africa would take a stance like that... they're usually pretty diplomatic πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ i guess its good to see them standing up for themselves and saying no to the us on this one?

πŸ€” I'm a bit surprised by this news, tbh. I mean, it's not like we're fans of Iran's human rights record here... but at the same time, I feel like the US is being kinda heavy-handed with its criticism. I get that they're worried about human rights in Iran, but can't they see that South Africa's just trying to build some international relationships and cooperation? 🌍 It's not like we're signing off on everything Iran does... and what if South Africa was actually trying to help the US out by showing solidarity during a joint naval exercise? πŸš’πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Anyway, I'm no expert, but it just feels like there's more to this story than meets the eye.

I feel bad for the US gov, they're always trying to keep the world safe & secure 🌎. But at the same time, I can understand why SA's military would wanna stick with Iran - all this 'cosying up' business sounds kinda like a diplomatic win to me 🀝. And let's be real, Iran has been through some crazy stuff lately, protests and human rights issues are no joke πŸ’”.

I'm not saying it's right for SA's military to ignore orders from the President or anything 😐, but maybe there's more to this story than meets the eye? It's not all black & white πŸ–ŒοΈ. The US gov is probably worried about the bigger picture & what this means for global stability βš”οΈ, but SA's got its own interests to consider too πŸ—ΊοΈ.

It's just too bad these tensions aren't helping anyone 😞 - people in Iran deserve better πŸ™, and the world needs more unity not division πŸ’•.

can u believe this? 🀯 south africa is literally standing up for iran while us is all bent out of shape over their human rights record... like what's the difference between us backing iran now & us backing them back when they're being good buddies with us? πŸ€” it just feels like a double standard. and angie motshekga is right btw, ramaphosa did tell them to ask iran to leave but we know how that usually goes down in washington... πŸ™„ all this drama over navies & politics... what's the real game here? πŸ’β€β™€οΈ

I think this is a big deal πŸ€”. South Africa's military teaming up with Iran sounds sketchy 🚫. I mean, what if it was a ploy to get some sweet intel on the US? 🀯 The fact that South Africa just went against the US orders without asking seems like a big no-no πŸ‘Ž.

I can see why the US embassy is upset πŸ˜’. Those warships in South African waters are not exactly what they'd consider "cosy" with Iran 😳. It's like, if you're gonna be friends with someone, you gotta at least try to keep their buddies out of your spot πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.

I wonder what's really going on here πŸ€”. Is South Africa just trying to balance its own interests? Or is this some kind of game we don't know about yet 🎲?

Anyway, it's not like I have all the answers πŸ’‘. But one thing's for sure: if you're gonna be friends with Iran, you gotta be prepared for some major pushback from the US πŸ‘Š

I'm so down for South Africa taking a stand here πŸ™Œ! The whole thing about Iranian warships being allowed to stay during that naval exercise just shows how much the US is sticking its nose into SA's business. I mean, what's next? Are they gonna tell us who we can and can't be friends with?

And let's not forget, Iran has been dealing with all sorts of protests at home and the US is still all over it. So, for South Africa to just roll over like that would've been a total betrayal. Angie Motshekga's got my back on this one πŸ‘.

The whole thing is a bit suspicious, if you ask me. The US is always quick to jump in with criticism, but what about their own human rights record? We shouldn't be lecturing others when we're not perfect ourselves πŸ€”.

This is gonna be good... so South Africa's military just became the ultimate wingman for Iran – "cosying up" sounds like a new dating term πŸ€£πŸ‘Š. I mean, who needs US allies when you've got warships to back you up? πŸ˜‚ But seriously, can we talk about how weird it is that the US is calling out South Africa's military when they're basically doing the same thing with Saudi Arabia and Israel... isn't that just a case of "do as I say, not as I do"? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
