US President Donald Trump has announced new economic sanctions on Russia's largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil. The move comes after a planned meeting between the US and Russian leaders in Budapest was cancelled indefinitely.
Trump stated that he had decided to impose the sanctions personally, saying "Every time I speak to Vladimir, I have good conversations and then they don't go anywhere." The President is hoping that the sanctions will force Russia to negotiate a peace deal over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
These sanctions target the oil companies' ability to do business globally. Trump wants to disrupt their operations and pressure Moscow to end its war efforts in Ukraine.
The move marks a significant shift in US foreign policy towards Russia, as President Trump had previously said he would not impose sanctions until European nations stopped buying Russian energy. The economic impact of these sanctions is likely to be limited for Russia.
Moscow has dismissed the sanctions, claiming that "there is no place for Russian oil on global markets". The Kremlin sees these moves as an attempt by the US and its allies to disrupt international trade.
The EU has also taken action against Russia's energy sector. European Union countries have agreed to ban the import of Russian liquefied natural gas from January 2027, in a move aimed at reducing dependence on Moscow's energy supplies.
Trump's decision is seen as an effort to apply pressure on Russia to negotiate a peace deal over Ukraine. The sanctions are also seen as a sign that the US President will take tougher action against Moscow if negotiations fail.
As tensions between the US and Russia remain high, it remains to be seen whether these sanctions will achieve their intended goal of forcing Moscow to negotiate a peace deal in Ukraine.

I'm skeptical about this move by Trump. He's already got his own track record with sanctions on Iran and North Korea, and that didn't exactly go smoothly. Russia is not going to just roll over because the US imposes some economic sanctions on their oil companies. It's like thinking a quick fix of taking away their energy revenue is gonna force them to negotiate a peace deal in Ukraine - it doesn't work that way.

. I mean, we're already feeling the pinch with global oil prices on the rise, and now Russia's biggest oil companies are being targeted? It could get messy for us consumers. The EU banning Russian liquefied natural gas by 2027 might not make a huge difference for us, but it's still gonna be interesting to see how this all plays out

. I hope the US and Russia can find a way to negotiate something that doesn't hurt our pockets too much

Russia's energy sector just got a big fat NO from the EU and a resounding shrug from Trump

Can't even get an oil deal to stick, what's next?

It seems like every time there's a plan, it falls apart. And now they're saying these sanctions won't do much damage to Russia... that's gotta be a good thing for Russia, right?

On the other hand, I can see why Trump wants to try this โ Ukraine is a big deal, and we've got a responsibility to help out. Still, it feels like we're just kicking the can down the road... or in this case, kicking Russia's oil companies into global uncertainty

so only time wll tell if these sanctions will actually work
so only time wll tell if these sanctions will actually work Trump didn't announce the sanctions all by himself, he got some Congress members on board too, so it's not like he just took one for the team. And btw, those sanctions aren't going to hurt Russia that much, they're mostly about crippling their ability to do business globally, which is already kinda a low blow

Newsflash: EU countries are just making sure they're not getting taken advantage of by Russia, and also wanting to reduce their dependence on Russian energy, which is a pretty reasonable goal
