US Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that a key participant in the 2012 Benghazi attack has been arrested. Zubayr al-Bakoush was extradited to the US and will face charges including murder, arson, and terrorism-related offenses.
Bondi emphasized that justice for those killed during the attack, which resulted in the deaths of four US citizens including Ambassador Christopher Stevens, would continue under her administration. "We have never forgotten those heroes," she said. "and we have never stopped seeking justice for that crime against our nation."
Al-Bakoush had been charged with both the murder of Ambassador Stevens and another State Department employee, Sean Smith, as well as the attempted murder of a State Department special agent.
However, not everyone directly involved in the attack is under arrest. Ahmed Abu Khatallah was convicted in 2014 for his role in the attack but received a lighter sentence after being cleared of murder charges.
The case has been highly politicized, particularly with regards to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's handling of security at the compound before the attack. The incident led to intense scrutiny from Congress and ongoing investigations.
This latest development marks a significant step forward in bringing justice for those affected by the 2012 Benghazi attack.
