US-South Africa funding: As American cash dries up the fight to stop Aids gets harder

The BBC reports that the US has cut funding to South Africa's HIV response, citing concerns over corruption and a new policy called "America First Global Health Strategy". This move is expected to have significant implications for the fight against HIV/AIDS in South Africa, which is one of the countries most affected by the disease. The article also mentions that researchers at the Desmond Tutu Foundation, who rely on US funding, are concerned about the loss of support.

🤔 what's really going on here? they're cutting funding over corruption? that's like saying "oh, I'm gonna cut the aid because some people might be using it for bad stuff"... sounds like a pretty weak excuse to me... and what's with this new policy called "America First Global Health Strategy"? just more excuses for them to cut ties with places they don't agree with... i need to see some actual proof of corruption before I start swallowing that narrative 📊

Umm... I don't know, man 🤔. They're cutting funding to a country that's already struggling with one of the biggest health crises in the world? That sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? 💉 But, on the other hand, I'm also thinking that maybe they should be looking out for their own interests and not just throwing money around everywhere 🤑. I mean, corruption is a real problem in South Africa, so it's hard to blame them for being cautious about where their funding goes.

But, at the same time, isn't HIV/AIDS one of those things that we all have to deal with together? 🤝 Like, shouldn't we be working together as a global community to find solutions, not cutting each other off? I don't know... this whole thing is just so confusing 😒.

🤔 this is gonna be bad for south africa... us cutting funding to their HIV response is a huge blow, especially with all the corruption stuff coming out. i mean, who's really surprised by this? it's just another example of how rich countries are always looking out for themselves and leaving the poor ones to deal with the consequences. 🤷‍♂️ researchers at the Desmond Tutu Foundation must be freaking out right now - without that us funding, their whole thing is basically toast. it's just a matter of time before south africa's HIV stats start rising again... and who's gonna care then? 🙄

Just saw this news about the US cutting funding to South Africa's HIV response 🤕... I was just talking to my friend about this on Twitter last week, saying that it was only a matter of time before something like this happened. He's always going on about how the US needs to think about its own priorities and stop throwing money at problems abroad.

But what really gets me is that the Desmond Tutu Foundation relies on that funding. I mean, they're doing amazing work over there, but now it looks like they're going to be severely impacted. I was just reading an article from 2022 saying how US funding has been a game-changer for South Africa's HIV efforts... and now it's all being taken away.

This makes me wonder if the new "America First Global Health Strategy" is really about making the world a better place or just saving face at home. 🤔 I don't think we're hearing enough from the US side of things about what this plan actually entails. We should be seeing more transparency on why they're cutting funding to a country that's doing so much good work in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

🤔 this move by the US is a huge red flag for global health policies, it's all about "America First" and what's good for them is good enough for everyone else right? I mean who do they think they are, making decisions on behalf of other countries and their citizens. It's just another example of how some governments don't care about the well-being of others unless it benefits them directly.

And let's be real, corruption has been a problem in South Africa, but cutting funding altogether is not the solution. It's like the US is taking away a lifeline that the people there so desperately need. What's next, will they cut funding for cancer research or something? 🤷‍♀️ It's all about priorities and I'm just worried about how this is going to impact innocent people who are struggling with HIV/AIDS in South Africa.

😕 this is really bad news for south africa i mean they already have a huge burden with hiv/aids and now its gonna get worse because the us is cutting funding 🤯 what are they even thinking over there? that corruption thingy is just an excuse they can use to shut down good work being done in africa 🙄 hope those researchers at desmond tutu foundation find other ways to fund their research 🤞 it's not gonna be easy for south africa to keep fighting this fight alone 👊

omg u wont bliev what's happend with south africa & hiv!!! us just cut funding 4 south africa's hiv response cuz they dont trust ppl r corrupt lol its like, how can we fight hiv w/o enuf $$$?? researchers @ desmond tutu foundation are literally shaking in their boots rn i feel bad 4 them they did so much good work w/ us funding & now its all b4 them lol u think it's a good idear 2 cut funding 4 somethin dat matters??

omg, is this a joke? the us just pulls out all its funds for south africa's hiv response because they're worried about corruption? that's like saying 'i'm gonna cut funding to cancer research in europe because i heard some scientists might've embezzled money 🤦‍♂️. it's just another example of how selfish politicians can be 🙄. and what's up with this 'america first' global health strategy? sounds like something trump would come up with, you know? anyway, hope those researchers at the desmond tutu foundation are prepared to find new donors or risk losing all their progress 💸😬
