We Bury the Dead review – Daisy Ridley tackles the undead in solid zombie twist

Daisy Ridley Delivers a Grief-Driven Zombie Thriller in "We Bury the Dead"

The zombie movie genre has been perpetually stuck in a rut, with most films relying on the same tired formulas. Australian director Zak Hilditch's latest offering, "We Bury the Dead," attempts to inject some much-needed freshness into the mix, focusing more on grief and trauma than mindless carnage.

In this haunting tale, Ridley stars as Ava, a grieving widow who travels to Tasmania to identify her late husband's body. Her quest becomes even more perilous when it emerges that a catastrophic accident involving a US government weapon has left hundreds of thousands dead, with some corpses beginning to wake up. Joining forces with rugged volunteer Clay (Brenton Thwaites), Ava must navigate the treacherous landscape and confront her own grief.

Ridley brings her signature emotional depth to the role, conveying Ava's anguish through a masterful display of facial expressions and body language. She expertly conveys the weight of Ava's loss, making it impossible not to feel for this deeply human character as she navigates her terrifying new world.

While Hilditch struggles with tone, capturing moments of introspection and quiet reflection, he also proves himself to be a skilled visual storyteller. The film's stunning cinematography captures the beauty of Tasmania, transforming even the most desolate landscapes into breathtaking vistas.

Ultimately, "We Bury the Dead" is not a groundbreaking zombie film, but it's a solid, well-crafted effort in a genre that often feels like an afterthought. Ridley shines as Ava, bringing a level of emotional complexity to the character that makes her journey feel all the more poignant and powerful. As the undead rise from their graves, we can't help but feel for this lost soul, who's fighting not just for survival, but for a sense of closure and peace.

"We Bury the Dead" is now playing in cinemas in the US, available on digital platforms in the UK from February 2nd, and hitting screens in Australia from February 5th.

I'm low-key obsessed with Daisy Ridley's new movie "We Bury the Dead". She's like a chameleon, bringing so much depth to Ava's character 🕷️. I love how she conveys grief without saying too much - it's all in her expressions and body language 💔. The cinematography is insane, too! Tasmania looks stunning on screen 🌳. What really gets me, though, is how the movie humanizes the zombie apocalypse. It's not just about brains and gore; it's about Ava's emotional journey and finding closure 😢. I'm definitely watching this again 👻💀.

omg u guys i just watched "We Bury the Dead" w Daisy Ridley & its literally so emotionally draining she plays this grieving widow who's already dealing with the loss of her husband & then these zombies start waking up its like she's fighting not just for survival but for her own sanity 😱💀. brenton thwaites is pretty cool too as her volunteer buddy, tho i think hilditch struggles w the tone a bit, sometimes it feels like ur stuck between emotional moments & all out zombie chaos 🤯🎥 still, ridley holds this whole film together & makes u feel so bad for ava 💔

omg u guys i just watched "We Bury the Dead" with daisy ridley 😩👻 it was like sooo emotional i feel for her character ava she's literally grieving for her hubby & then theres this apocalypse 🌪️😱 where ppl start risin from da dead & u gotta feel bad for her 🤕 brenton thwaites is hot tho 😘 but seriously zak hilditch does a great job w/ visuals n stuff 👍 maybe its not da best zombie movie ever but ridley shines & makes me care about her character 💖 cant wait 2 c how ppl react 2 it on imdb 🤔

OMG u guys I just watched "We Bury the Dead" w/ my fave actor Brenton Thwaites 😍🎬 I'm literally shook rn Ava's character is soooo relatable I feel like I've been there too after losing someone I care about 💔 Daisy Ridley does an amazing job bringing her to life, it's like you can see the grief in her eyes 🤯. I love how the film isn't just about zombies but also about the human side of things, so raw and emotional 😭. And that cinematography tho! Tasmania is literally breathtaking 🌿🏞️ I'm definitely going to watch this again when it comes out on digital platforms in the UK 📺

this movie sounds soooo deep 🤯 Ava's grief is giving me all the feels 😭 I love how daisy ridley brings her character to life with just facial expressions and body language 🙌 it's like you can feel her pain and trauma through every single scene 🤕 the cinematography in tasmania looks stunning 🌳🏞️ i'm not really into zombie movies but if there's an emotional rollercoaster involved, count me in 🎠 this movie might not be groundbreaking but it's definitely a solid effort 🙏

I'm so stoked to see Daisy Ridley taking on more complex roles like this - she's really proving herself as a talented actress 💖. The way she conveys Ava's emotional depth is just wow, it's like you can feel her grief radiating off the screen 🤯. I do think the film could've gone in some different directions, but overall I'm happy with how it turned out - it's not a total game-changer, but it's still a solid addition to the zombie genre 🎥. The cinematography is insane though, Tasmania is literally stunning on screen 😍.

just saw the trailer for daisy ridley's new zombie movie and it looks like she's giving a really emotional performance 🌑😩 i think what's gonna make this film stand out is how it focuses on grief and trauma rather than just mindless zombies. but still, it's not like it's gonna change the genre forever or anything 😒 anyway, ridley's acting chops are always top notch so fingers crossed she carries this movie 🤞

omg I just saw this movie and it's SO good! 🤩 Daisy Ridley is literally amazing as Ava, she brings so much depth to her character and makes you feel all the feels 😭👻. The cinematography is stunning too, Tasmania looks like a whole different world on screen 🌳💚. I'm not usually a fan of zombie movies but this one's got heart and it's more about grief and trauma than just gore and action 💔. Brenton Thwaites is also super cool as Ava's love interest 👍. The only thing that keeps me from giving it 5/5 stars is that the tone can be a bit all over the place at times, but overall I'd say it's a solid effort in a genre that often gets overlooked 🎬👏

I'm not convinced about this one 🤔... I mean, it sounds like a pretty standard zombie flick to me 😴. Sure, Daisy Ridley is awesome as always, but can't we have a fresh take on the genre? The US government weapon thing seems a bit convenient and unexplained, don't you think? 🤦‍♀️ And while the cinematography in Tasmania does look stunning, it's not like it's never been done before... I've seen some amazing zombie films that didn't rely so much on grief and trauma. Still, if it's well-made and entertaining, I'm all for giving it a try! 👍

🤔 I mean, I loved Daisy Ridley in Star Wars, but here she's got her hands full with this zombie thriller. It's not like we haven't seen this before, you know? The whole grief thing is interesting, though - it feels more real than the usual 'run from zombies' nonsense. But sometimes I feel like it gets a bit too sappy... Ava's emotions are just so all over the place, it's hard to keep up 🤷‍♀️. And can we talk about how cliché the "tough widow" trope is? Still, Ridley does her thing well and brings some much-needed depth to the character 😐. The cinematography in this film is insane, though - Tasmania looks stunning! 👍

😊 I'm so glad Daisy Ridley is taking on more complex roles like this one! She always brings such depth to her characters, it's amazing to see her tackle darker themes like grief and trauma. The film's atmosphere feels really immersive too, I love how the cinematography captures the beauty of Tasmania. The plot might not be super original, but I think that's part of what makes it so effective - it's a reminder that even in the most mundane situations, there can be something terrifying lurking beneath the surface... 🌊

Omg I'm FREAKING OUT for this movie!!! Daisy Ridley as Ava is going to be SO intense! I love how she's getting to play a character that's all about grief and trauma, it's like she's already bringing her A-game 🤩 And can we talk about the zombie apocalypse part? Like, I know it's not new but Zac Hilditch is trying something different here and I am HERE. FOR. IT 💀🎥 I'm dying to see how it all comes together, if Brenton Thwaites brings the right amount of ruggedness to his role, if the cinematography holds up... I need to know! 😅

I'm really loving Daisy Ridley's latest role as Ava in "We Bury the Dead" 🎥💀! She brings so much depth to the character, it's like you can feel her pain and grief radiating off the screen. The film itself isn't a game changer for the zombie genre, but it's definitely well done & I love how it focuses on Ava's emotional journey more than just mindless action. The cinematography is stunning too - Tasmania looks gorgeous! 🌿📸 What I think makes this film stand out is how it humanizes Ava's experience of losing someone she loves. It's not just about zombies, it's about one person's struggle to cope with her emotions & find closure.

I'm so down for this zombie movie, reminds me of those old Resident Evil games 🎮🧟‍♂️ where you play as a survivor trying to escape a virus-infested world... back then it was all about the action and horror, now I guess it's more about the emotional journey 💔. Daisy Ridley is amazing in this, she brings so much depth to her character Ava, makes me feel bad for her 😓. The cinematography in Tasmania looks stunning, love how they used the natural scenery to set the mood 🌳👻. Still, I gotta say, I prefer older zombie movies like 28 Days Later or Shaun of the Dead, those were more raw and unsettling 🤪. But hey, if it's well-crafted like this one, I'm in! 👍

🙄 I mean, Daisy Ridley's got talent for sure, but can we talk about how overhyped this zombie movie thing is? 🧟‍♀️ Like, it's just another generic outbreak story. And what's with the US government weapon that creates these zombies? So original. 😒

And don't even get me started on Zak Hilditch's directing style. I mean, I guess the visuals are nice and all, but he needs to work on his tone control. One minute it's all dark and gritty, next minute it's like a rom-com or something. 🤷‍♂️

The only thing that really shines in this movie is Daisy Ridley's performance as Ava. She brings a level of emotional depth to the character that makes you feel for her, even when she's running from zombies left and right. 👏 But still, it's not like it's some groundbreaking new take on the zombie genre or anything. It's just another zombie movie with a strong female lead. 🤷‍♀️

I'm so done with zombie movies that don't put any thought into the characters' emotional journeys 🤯🧠. I mean, what's the point of watching a bunch of people run around and fight if none of them are even fleshed out as human beings? But "We Bury the Dead" is different - Daisy Ridley brings so much depth to Ava's character that it makes you actually care about her struggles 💔👀. The film's tone can be a bit all over the place at times, but when it gets it right, man... the cinematography is stunning 🌊🎥. If more zombie movies focused on character development like this one, I might actually start to enjoy them again 😏

I'm so excited to see Daisy Ridley taking on a role like this! I mean, she's already proven herself as an amazing actress in Star Wars, but here she's really showing off her range with Ava's complex grief. The film itself is a bit of a slow burn, but the scenery in Tasmania looks stunning and it adds to the whole eerie atmosphere. I love how Ridley makes Ava feel so real and relatable, you can't help but root for her as she navigates this nightmare world. And Thwaites is great too! Overall, it's not going to change the zombie genre forever, but it's a solid addition to the mix 🎥👻

I'm so glad another zombie movie has come along to spice up our lives 😒. But seriously, Daisy Ridley is a total game-changer in this one. She brings such depth to Ava's character, it's like you're right there with her, feeling all the feels 🤯. And let's be real, who doesn't love a good zombie apocalypse story? It's like the ultimate excuse for a Netflix marathon 😂. The cinematography is stunning too, makes me want to pack my bags and move to Tasmania immediately (just kidding, I'm good) 🌳. Overall, it's not groundbreaking, but it's a solid effort in a genre that can be super formulaic. Ridley's the real MVP 👏.
