What we know about Spain's worst train disaster in over a decade

At least 40 people have lost their lives in a devastating train crash that took place in southern Spain, the worst rail disaster to hit the country in over a decade. The accident occurred on Sunday evening when two high-speed trains collided near the city of Córdoba, leaving dozens more injured.

The incident happened at around 19:45 local time when one of the trains derailed and crossed over to the opposite track before colliding with an oncoming train travelling from south Madrid to Huelva. The majority of those killed were in the front carriages of the Huelva-bound train, while many more were injured.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the scene on Monday and announced a three-day mourning period for the victims. An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway, but officials say it may be months before the results are known.

What is not yet clear is what caused the trains to derail in the first place. Officials have described the incident as "extremely strange" and say that all experts consulted by the government are baffled by the accident. The president of Spain's state-owned rail operator, Renfe, has suggested a mechanical fault or infrastructure issue may be to blame.

Rescue teams have been working tirelessly to search for survivors among the wreckage, but many of those who were on board the trains remain trapped inside the carriages due to twisted metal and debris. The victims' identities have not yet been released, with officials saying that some people are still being treated in hospital.

Passengers described the moment of impact as feeling like an "earthquake" and said it shattered the train's windows, displaced luggage and threw people to the floor. Those who were on board the trains told of chaos and confusion as they tried to make sense of what had happened.

The full extent of the devastation is still coming to light, but one thing is clear - this has been a tragedy for Spain and its people.

🚂😱 I cant believe how devastating this accident is 🤕, 40+ lives lost? It's just too much 💔. And what's really got me thinking is that the trains derailed on their own before colliding with the other train... was it a mechanical issue or something more? 🤔. Officials say they're still baffled by the accident, and I don't blame them one bit 😕. The fact that rescue teams are still searching for survivors among the wreckage is just heartbreaking 💔.

And can we talk about how quickly this happened? 19:45 on Sunday evening and now the full extent of the devastation is coming to light... it's like a nightmare unfolding right before our eyes 😳. I'm sure Spain will get through this, but it's going to take some time 🕰️. One thing that's for sure is that this accident has left us all in shock 😱.

I remember when there were accidents on the trains back in the 90s and early 2000s... they were bad, but nothing like this 😨. It just goes to show how much technology and safety measures have improved over the years 🤓. Still, you can never be too careful when it comes to something as critical as our transportation systems 💯.

Anyway, I'm sure we'll hear more about the investigation in the coming weeks/months... for now, my thoughts are with the victims and their families 💕. This is just a tragic reminder of how fragile life can be 🙏.

🚂😱 Man oh man, 40 lives lost in one accident? That's just devastating. I'm thinking about the passengers who were on those trains, just minding their own business, and then BAM! This happens. It's like something out of a movie. 🎥 The fact that officials are saying it might be months before they figure out what caused the crash is just frustrating. Like, can't we get some answers soon? 🙄 And those passengers who were trapped in the wreckage... poor guys, still waiting for help to come through. It's like, why did this have to happen here and now? 😔

Ugh, this train crash in Spain is just devastating 🤕... I mean, 40 lives lost? That's crazy. And no one knows what caused it yet? I don't buy the "extremely strange" explanation from the officials - that sounds like they're just covering their own backsides. I think a mechanical fault or infrastructure issue is probably the real deal here, but I'd want to see some concrete evidence before I agree with Renfe's president 🤔... and what about all those people trapped inside the wreckage? It's like they were in a nightmare from which they couldn't wake up 😩. This tragedy is not just for Spain, it's also for all of us who are lucky enough to be safe - let's hope we can learn something from this and improve our rail systems before more lives are lost 🚂💔

I'm really saddened by the news of the devastating train crash in southern Spain 🤕. My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident 💔. It's just horrific to think about dozens more being injured and many trapped under twisted metal, with no clear explanation yet on what caused the trains to derail.

As a neutral observer, it's hard not to wonder if this could have been prevented with better safety measures or infrastructure checks 🤔. The fact that experts are still baffled by the accident is really worrying. I hope the investigation into the cause of the crash will be thorough and provide some answers soon ⏱️.

But for now, my thoughts are with the Spanish people and the victims' families who are going through this unimaginable pain 😔. Three days of mourning are a good start, but I'm sure many more support and comfort will be needed in the coming days 🌸.

omg this is such a sad news 🤕 i was just checking my twitter feed before bed and saw this huge train crash in spain and my heart sank like 40 people have died it's absolutely devastating...i keep thinking about the passengers on those trains who were traveling home from work or visiting family...what if they had made that call to say goodbye? 🚂😢 anyway i'm sure the government will get to the bottom of this mechanical fault or infrastructure issue and make sure something like this never happens again 💔

Ugh I just got back from a trip to Tokyo 🗺️ and their vending machine game is on another level... I swear, you can buy everything from underwear to fresh bread from those things! 😂 And have you ever tried to find a good cup of coffee while traveling? It's like a mission! Anyway, I was thinking about how much we take our transportation systems for granted here in the West... I mean, train crashes are pretty rare in countries with well-maintained infrastructure. 🤔 But seriously, my thoughts are with the people of Spain right now... 40 lives lost is just devastating 😔

This is such a sad day for Spain... 🤕 The thought of all those lives lost in an instant is just heartbreaking. I'm sure it's really tough on everyone who knows someone who was on that train. It's good that the authorities are taking their time to figure out what happened, but at the same time, I wish they could get to the bottom of it as soon as possible so we can all feel some closure.

It's crazy how quickly things went wrong - one minute everything was fine, and the next... 😱. I hope the rescue teams are doing okay and that everyone who is still trapped in the wreckage will be found safely soon. Three days of mourning seems like a good idea, but it's not going to bring back those who lost their lives. 🙏

😱 just saw the news about that train crash in spain... feels like we're stuck in some kind of nightmare 🤯 how could something like this happen? 🚂💔 i'm thinking about all those families who lost loved ones, it's just devastating 😭 and what really gets me is that no one knows what caused the derailment yet 🤔 it's been months since the accident and they still don't have a clear answer 🕰️. we need to get to the bottom of this ASAP so that something like this never happens again 💪

😱🚨 my thoughts are with all those affected by this train crash in southern Spain... it's just heartbreaking to think about 40 lives lost 💔 and so many more injured 🤕... the fact that everyone on board is still trapped in the wreckage is just devastating 😩... I'm keeping my fingers crossed that rescue teams can find anyone who might be left unaccounted for 💫... this whole thing feels like a "Fast & Furious" movie gone wrong 🚗💥, but instead of high-octane action, it's real-life human suffering ❤️... Spain, I hope you're getting the support and help you need during this dark time 🤝
