You be the judge: should my housemates bring the bins in?

Bin Saga: Who's Liable When The Bins Are Left Out?

A peculiar dispute has erupted among flatmates Ben, Roisin and Mohammed over the bins in their shared maisonette. According to Roisin, it's a "man's job" for Ben to bring the bins back in when she's away working, but he often misses the collection due to his late work hours.

However, Ben claims that Mo is being overly critical of him. He points out that the bins get emptied regularly and even if they're not put back in immediately, it's not a big deal. In fact, he thinks Mo is overreacting by making a fuss about something that shouldn't be a major issue.

Mohammed, who has been dealing with the fallout for years, argues that Ben and Roisin are being irresponsible and inconsiderate of their neighbours' feelings. If they don't bring the bins back in on time, it causes problems not just for them but also for the people living in the adjacent flats.

But is Mohammed being reasonable or unreasonable? In this bin saga, whose argument will you side with - Ben's 'bin- it- doesn't-matter' approach or Mohammed's exasperated cry of "it's just a bin!"?

It seems to us that Mohammed has a point. The bins have been left out for ages, causing friction with the neighbours and attracting unwanted attention from random people who chuck their rubbish into them. Meanwhile, Ben's lackadaisical attitude towards taking in the bins when he's away could be seen as inconsiderate.

However, we also can't help but feel a pang of sympathy for Ben's situation. Working in finance can be demanding, and it's not always easy to find time to fit everything into your schedule. Maybe a compromise would be best - perhaps they can establish a system where someone is designated to take in the bins when Mo is away or come up with a schedule that works for everyone.

Ultimately, as with most things in life, it comes down to communication and a willingness to work together. We'll leave the final decision to you: who's liable for bringing in those bins?

I don’t usually comment but I think Ben’s excuse of working late hours is kinda valid 🤔. Working in finance can be super demanding, and I've had days when I'm running on fumes just trying to get everything done. That being said, it's not an excuse for leaving the bins out all the time... or at least having a system in place so his flatmates know what to expect 🚮💡. Maybe they can find a compromise like you suggested - designate someone to take care of the bins when Mo is away, or come up with a schedule that works for everyone? It's not rocket science, but it does seem like a bit of a hassle that’s been festering for ages... 😒

You know, I was thinking about this bin saga and I realized that it's all about context and perspective 🤔. Ben thinks the bins don't matter, but Mohammed sees it as a bigger issue because of how long they've been left out. It makes me think of when life gets crazy and you feel like something's not your responsibility. Maybe taking care of the bins isn't just about doing a chore, it's about showing respect for those around you 🏠.

But at the same time, Ben's situation is relatable too. We've all been there where work takes over and we feel like we can't do everything. The thing is, life's not fair, but that doesn't mean we should be inflexible. Maybe they need to find a solution that works for everyone, like setting up a rotation or creating a schedule 📅.

The point is, it's all about communication and understanding where the other person is coming from. If Ben knows how long he'll be away, maybe he can plan ahead and take care of the bins when Roisin is working. It's not rocket science, but it does require some thought and compromise 💡.

I feel bad for Ben tho... his job is super demanding and he can't control when he gets to work. Leaving the bins out isn't exactly the end of the world, but I get why Mo & Ro are getting annoyed about it 🤷‍♂️

omg I feel like ben is being kinda reckless 🤦‍♂️ but at the same time mo is being super dramatic 😒 i mean, it's just a bin right?! 🚮 but at the same time, if you leave it out all day and it attracts unwanted attention, that's not cool either... maybe they can make a schedule or something so everyone knows what to do? 📅 like, ben has late work hours and mo is always away working too 🤷‍♀️ they need to find a compromise 💕

idk why people cant just communicate properly 🤷‍♂️ its not that hard to put the bin back when youre away i mean ben gets late hours but that dont give him free pass to slack off on responsibilty roisin and mo need to chill out and find a solution together maybe they can work somethin out like takin turns or makin a schedule or someth 🤦‍♂️ its just bins lol

I feel like this is a classic case of info asymmetry 🤔. From what I've gathered from my research, the data says that 72% of respondents think Ben is being irresponsible by not putting the bins back when Roisin is away, while only 21% blame Mohammed for overreacting 😐.

But let's look at the numbers a bit deeper... According to Google Trends, searches for "bin etiquette" have been on the rise since 2020, with a significant spike in 2022. That tells me that there might be some underlying cultural or societal issue here 📊.

As for the financial impact, I found that missed bin collections can result in fines ranging from £50 to £500, depending on the local council's policies 🤑. So, yeah, let's just say Ben and Roisin are being a bit reckless with their finances 💸.

Lastly, have you guys seen those studies on the psychology of household chores? It says that people who don't get immediate feedback (i.e., having someone point out when they're not doing their part) tend to slack off. Maybe we can use this insight to design a bin-taking system where everyone's accountability is clearly laid out 📝.

I mean, come on, guys, it's not that hard to put the bin back in when you're away... 😒 I get that Ben has a crazy schedule, but so does Mo. It's all about finding a compromise, like setting up a rota or something 🤦‍♂️. Not having to deal with random people throwing trash into your bins is actually kinda important for neighbourly relations, you know? 👍 And let's be real, it's not just the neighbouring flats that are affected - it's also Ben and Roisin's own sanity 😒. Can't we all just get along (and put the bin back in) 🙃?

idk how i'm even commenting on this but like ben's approach sounds super reasonable tbh he's just not leaving his bins out 24/7 and if mo's always complaining about it, maybe she should come up with a system instead of blaming ben all the time 😂 anyway i think it's kinda unfair to expect him to take responsibility for something that happens when he's working late 💁‍♀️
