CEOs are tired of being held responsible for gun regulation | CNN Business

Corporate giants keep their silence on gun reform after latest school shooting

For years, corporate executives have been vocal about gun control, even going so far as to call it a "public health crisis". They've taken a strong stance and made significant donations to politicians who support stricter gun laws. However, in the wake of the latest mass school shooting in Nashville, the silence from America's biggest companies is deafening.

Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, a professor at Yale School of Management, attributes this complacency to the fact that corporations have become synonymous with advocating for social change. "We're turning to them to be our saviors on every topic," he says. "The social change that happened in the 1960s wasn't being led primarily by CEOs. Social changes really happened when we saw the interfaith activity of clergy locking arms and canvassing legislators."

Sonnenfeld argues that corporations have a limited impact, even if they are highly active. He points out that while CEOs take strong stances on issues like gun control, they often can't address all the issues on their own. The nation's CEOs are waiting for everybody else to join them.

The reason for this silence is complex, but one possible explanation is that corporations have taken a strong stance and gone further than the general public in terms of action, not just words. As a result, they're now waiting for others to follow suit.

This isn't because CEOs aren't capable or willing to make a difference. It's simply that social capital is as valuable as financial capital, and they need the rest of civil society to join them on this issue.

In other words, corporations are frustrated by their own inability to drive change without the broader public taking action alongside them.

I'm so done with these big companies talking about gun reform for years but not saying a word now 🀬. They're all like "public health crisis" and "we need stricter laws" but when it comes down to it, they just disappear πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. It's like they think their words are enough to fix the problem on their own πŸ™„. Newsflash: your wallet doesn't have the power to change people's minds πŸ˜‚. We need our leaders and everyday folks to come together and demand change before these companies can even hope to make a difference πŸ’ͺ.

I'm super bummed out about this πŸ€•. I mean, corporate giants have been talking a good game when it comes to gun control, but where's the beef? πŸ” They're all like "we need stricter laws" and "we're donating millions" but what about the actual action? It feels like they're just trying to spin their image rather than actually doing something meaningful. I get that social change can be hard to drive, but shouldn't we be expecting more from our big corporations? They've got the resources, the influence, and the platform to make a real difference. Let's hold them accountable! πŸ’ͺ

I'm thinking something fishy is going on here... They're making a big show about gun reform when it's convenient for them, but as soon as it becomes a real fight, they just ghost it πŸ’€. I mean, corporations have been talking the talk for years, but where are they now? πŸ˜’ It's like they're waiting for someone else to take the lead, maybe thinking that'll make their own actions seem more legit πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Newsflash: just because you donate to politicians doesn't mean you're actually making a difference πŸ’Έ. Something's off here...

I gotta say, it's kinda weird that everyone's pointing fingers at corps for not speaking up more on gun reform πŸ€”. I mean, they're already making a big impact by donating to politicians who support stricter laws... like, come on, you guys are already out there! πŸ˜‚ What do people want from them? For them to just magically make all the problems go away? πŸ™„ It's not that simple.

And Sonnenfeld makes some good points too. Like, corporations can't solve everything on their own. They need us, the public, to join forces with them and push for change πŸ’ͺ. It's like we're waiting for the CEOs to say "ok, now it's your turn" πŸ˜…. Social capital is as valuable as financial capital, right? πŸ€‘ So, let's give credit where credit is due... corps are already out there making a difference, even if it's just by being vocal about it πŸ’¬.

I feel really bad about this latest school shooting πŸ€•... it's just devastating! I think what Jeffrey Sonnenfeld said makes a lot of sense - we're expecting too much from big companies, you know? They've done so much already, but they can't do everything on their own. It's not that they don't care, it's just that social change takes a village, right? 🌟 We need all sorts of people and organizations coming together to make a difference, not just the CEOs and corporations. Maybe this is an opportunity for us as a society to step up and demand change ourselves πŸ’ͺ... who's with me?!

πŸ€” I'm not surprised about this at all πŸ™„. Remember when big companies were actually passionate about social causes? Like, remember when Apple came out with that ad for LGBTQ+ rights back in 2014? πŸ“Ί Those were the days, folks! Corporations used to be more than just soulless profit-makers; they were a force for good.

But I guess all that changed when they started making bank off those "socially responsible" labels πŸ’Έ. Suddenly, they're only interested in being seen as progressive, not actually doing anything about it πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. And now, when something like this school shooting happens, they just... disappear πŸ”‡.

It's all about social capital, I get it 😬. But come on, CEOs! You've got the platform and the resources; don't leave us hanging while you wait for the rest of society to catch up πŸ’ͺ. Maybe then we can talk about your sincerity πŸ€”.

I'm totally not surprised that corporate giants are being super quiet about gun reform πŸ€”. I mean, think about it - they're already making bank off our clicks and dollars, so why should they risk losing some of that power by speaking out on an issue that might actually lead to some real change? 😴

It's like Sonnenfeld said, corporations have a limited impact if they're just talking the talk. They need people from all walks of life to join them in demanding change, and until then, their words are just not gonna cut it πŸ’¬.

And honestly, I don't think it's about CEOs being incapable or unwilling to make a difference... it's more like they're feeling a bit overwhelmed by the task πŸ˜…. They're used to getting what they want through PR and marketing magic, but when it comes to real change-making, they need some help from their friends 🀝.

Let's be real, social capital is way more valuable than financial capital these days πŸ’Έ, so corporations are waiting for everyone else to step up before they make a move. That's just how the game is played now 😏

πŸ’”πŸ«πŸ˜• So many school shootings 🀯, when will we get some real change? πŸ™„ I'm so tired of these corporate giants talking about gun control but not doing anything πŸ’ΈπŸ‘Š They're just waiting for everyone else to step up, which is kinda like saying "come on people" πŸ‘₯

I mean, I get it, corporations can't single-handedly solve this problem βš–οΈ. But what's the point of all these high-profile CEOs speaking out if they're not going to put their money where their mouth is πŸ’ΈπŸ‘? And btw, social change has always been about more than just big business πŸ€πŸ’•

We need to stop relying on corporations to lead the charge and start expecting them to do so πŸ‘Š. We should be demanding action from them, not just their empty words πŸ—£οΈπŸ’¬. It's time for some real change πŸ’₯!

I'm like super surprised they're not speaking out more πŸ€”... I mean, shouldn't big companies be all about using their influence for good? They've been saying gun control is a thing and donating to politicians who support it, so why the silence now? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I guess Sonnenfeld makes some valid points - corporations can only do so much on their own and need public support to make real change happen. But isn't that exactly what they're trying to achieve in the first place? It's all a bit confusing for me, to be honest... 🀯

I gotta say, it's pretty ironic that big corps are all about social change, but when it comes down to guns, they're MIA πŸ€”. I mean, we've seen them donating big bucks to politicians who support stricter laws, but when there's a mass shooting, suddenly their voices disappear? It's like, where's the leverage when people aren't putting pressure on them? πŸ€‘

I get what that prof is saying about corporations having limited impact, and yeah, they can't solve every problem on their own. But at least try to use your social capital to get others to join in, right? πŸ’Ό It's not like they're waiting for the government to take action or anything... that's just more of the same πŸ™„.

And let's be real, corporate America has been all about creating a good public image. Maybe this silence is just another way to avoid being seen as hypocrites πŸ“£. Either way, it's not exactly what we need right now – a lack of leadership and accountability from people who claim to care about social change πŸ’”

I'm totally baffled by this one πŸ€”... all these big companies rapping about gun control for yrs and then suddenly going silent after a mass school shooting 🚫. It's like they expect everyone else 2 step up, but it feels like they're waiting 4 the ppl 2 catch on 2. I get that social change takes time n effort, but come on! We need CEOs 2 use their clout 2 drive change, especially when it comes 2 protecting our kids πŸ“š. It's not just about them sayin' a few words, we need action πŸ’ͺ...

I'M SO SAD ABOUT THIS LATEST SCHOOL SHOOTING!!! IT'S LIKE, WHY ARE THESE CORPORATIONS JUST SITTING THERE NOT SAYING ANYTHING?! THEY'VE BEEN ALL FOR GUN REFORM BEFORE, BUT NOW IT'S LIKE THEY'VE GONE QUIET. I GET WHAT PROFESSOR SONNENFELD IS SAYING THOUGH - THESE BIG COMPANIES CAN'T DO IT ON THEIR OWN, WE NEED THE REST OF US TO STEP UP AND DEMAND CHANGE TOO!!! IT'S NOT ABOUT BEING LESS CAPABLE OR WILLING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, IT'S JUST THAT THEY REALIZE SOCIAL CAPITAL IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS FINANCIAL CAPITAL NOW.

I'm so down with the corporate giants stepping up on gun reform! I mean, we all know they've been talking about it for years, but now's the time for them to put their money where their mouth is πŸ€‘. They're like, "Hey, we care about this issue too!" But honestly, it feels like they're just waiting around for someone else to pick up the slack. I get it, social change takes a village and all that jazz 🌈. We need corporations to lead the charge, but at the same time, we can't rely solely on them. It's like they're saying, "Hey, we've got this!" when in reality, they need us to back them up πŸ’ͺ.

I wish they'd be more proactive about pushing for gun reform instead of just waiting for others to follow suit πŸ•°οΈ. We need CEOs and corporate leaders to take bold action and use their influence to drive change. It's time for some real leadership on this issue, not just a bunch of empty words πŸ’¬.

🚨 another school shooting πŸ€• and the big guys are MIA πŸ’Έ corporate giants are all for gun control in theory but when it comes down to it, crickets πŸ’₯ i mean what's the point of donating millions to politicians if you're not gonna use your own influence to make some real noise? πŸ—£οΈ and another thing, prof sonnenfeld makes a valid point that corporations have become the go-to solution for social change but let's be real, they can't do it all on their own πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” I mean, it's crazy how corporations can be all about social change but still don't make a big noise when it comes to gun reform 🎯. They've been talking the talk for years, but now that it's really needed, they're just sitting tight πŸ’Έ. It's like, they think by making a few donations and speaking up occasionally, they can magically fix everything πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Newsflash: social change takes a village! πŸ’• When everyone's not on the same page, no amount of corporate activism is gonna make a difference πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. We need to see more people from all walks of life taking action and demanding real change 🌟. Corporations might have social capital too, but we can't just rely on them to save the day πŸ’ͺ.

πŸ€” I'm so sick of these corporate giants talking about social issues but not actually doing anything about it. They've been making all these grand speeches and donating loads of cash to politicians who support stricter gun laws, but now that a school shooting happened... NOTHING. No statement from Apple, Google, Facebook... just crickets 🐦. It's like they're waiting for someone else to take the lead on this one. I mean, come on guys! You've been vocal about climate change and stuff, so why can't you do the same with gun control? It's not rocket science... just use your influence to make a difference πŸ’ΈπŸ‘Š

OMG, y'all, I'm literally SHOOK by the corporate giants' silence on gun reform πŸ€―πŸŽ‰. Like, they're all about advocating for social change and donating to politicians who support stricter laws, but when it comes down to it, CRICKETS 🐜. Sonnenfeld's right, they can't do it alone, and their "public health crisis" comments are starting to sound like empty promises πŸ’Έ.

I think this is a great opportunity for the general public to step up and demand change! We need to hold our CEOs accountable for their actions (or lack thereof) 🀝. It's not about waiting for them to join us; it's about driving the conversation forward ourselves. Let's make some noise and show them that we won't be ignored πŸ”ŠπŸ’ͺ

The corporate giants have been making a lot of noise about gun control πŸ—£οΈ, but when it comes down to actually doing something, they're mum. It's like they're trying to lead a revolution, but they can't do it alone πŸ’Ό. They need the rest of us to join in and make some real change happen 🀝. It's not about being shy or afraid, it's just that corporations are finding out that social change is hard work and requires everyone's participation πŸ”¨. Until they get people on board with them, their words are just empty πŸ’”.
