Ex-EPA head urges US to resist Trump attacks on climate action: 'We won't become numb'

US Cities and States Refuse to Give Up on Climate Action Amid Trump Administration's Attacks

The Trump administration's relentless assault on climate action has failed to dampen the resolve of US cities and states, according to Gina McCarthy, the former Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) head. Speaking ahead of next month's major UN climate talks in Brazil, McCarthy urged Americans to resist the administration's efforts to block policies and incentives for clean energy.

"We will not allow our country to become numb or debilitated by those who are standing in the way of progress," McCarthy said on a press call. Her words echoed the sentiments of Sheldon Whitehouse, the Rhode Island senator, who called climate leaders to resist Trump's attacks and sue the administration over potentially illegal obstruction.

The US cities and states that have coalesced around America Is All In coalition are committed to reducing planet-heating pollution by up to 56% below 2005 levels by 2035. According to a new study from the coalition and the University of Maryland's Center for Global Sustainability, expanded climate action from cities and states paired with federal re-engagement could have a significant impact.

However, Trump is cracking down on state and local climate action, trying to block policies in court and eliminate incentives for clean energy. Whitehouse warned that if leaders allow themselves to be intimidated by the administration's tactics, they will seize all the ground that has been lost and come back for more.

The US is not alone in this struggle. Global climate leaders must adopt an aggressive attitude to counter the influence of the fossil fuel industry, which Whitehouse described as "villains" in the story of the climate crisis. The industry has created a "whole armada of fake front groups" to spread doubt about the climate crisis and protect its interests.

Experts warn that without this influence, the world may have acted on climate much earlier. Climate experts have long condemned the role of fossil fuel companies in UN climate negotiations, and record numbers of lobbyists have attended talks since the passage of the landmark 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.

The United Nations climate change body has introduced new guidelines around transparency, but McCarthy called them "a bit of a disappointment." Whitehouse wants more transparency about who is funding participation in climate talks and what evil they have been doing. The battle for transparency and accountability will be crucial in shaping the future of global climate action.

πŸ€” I was just thinking, have you ever noticed how pizza delivery guys always seem to know exactly when you're having a bad day? Like, I ordered a pie last week and it arrived like 20 minutes after my coworker spilled coffee all over my shirt... anyway, I digress. πŸ• It's crazy how the US is taking on climate action despite the Trump admin's attacks. As for transparency at UN climate talks, I feel me too - who doesn't want to know what's really going on? 😏

I'm still low-key impressed by US cities & states standing up to Trump's climate denial 🀯. It's like, they're not gonna let the admin's attempts to block progress get in their way πŸ’ͺ. And honestly, I think it's kinda sad that we need a former EPA head like Gina McCarthy to remind ppl of what matters πŸ™„. Can't we just have a functional gov't that prioritizes the planet over polluting profiteers? The fact that these cities & states are committed to reducing emissions by 56% by 2035 is still a major win πŸŽ‰, even if it's not happening under ideal circumstances πŸ˜’. Global climate leaders need to step up their game and take on those fossil fuel villains πŸ’₯.

Ugh I think we should just give up on climate action now lol πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ But seriously, what's with all these cities and states refusing to back down? They're basically making it worse by trying to prove a point. Like, can't they just compromise or something? πŸ€” And Gina McCarthy is like totally right that we need to resist the Trump admin's attacks, but at the same time, isn't it kinda naive to think that states and cities alone can save us? I mean, what about all those emissions coming from industries and transportation? It's not just a simple matter of individual action, you know? πŸš—πŸ’¨

I gotta say, it's kinda amusing how Trump thinks he can just bully states and cities into giving up on climate action 🀣. Like, newsflash: we're not gonna let you win this one, dude! The fact that they're trying to block policies in court is just laughable – do they really think they're gonna get away with it? States like Rhode Island are standing strong, and it's about time someone did πŸ‘Š. And btw, I'm loving how Gina McCarthy is speaking truth to power πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. It's time for the US to step up its climate game if we wanna make a difference on the global stage 🌎

I'm so frustrated with this climate situation 🀯. These US cities and states are really fighting back against Trump's attempts to stop them from going green πŸ’š. I mean, who doesn't want to save the planet? It's crazy that they're still being attacked by the admin πŸ™„.

It makes sense though that they would push back - we need more clean energy and less pollution ASAP ⏰. And it's not just about US cities and states, global leaders need to step up their game too πŸ‘₯. The fossil fuel industry is like a villain in this story, trying to block progress and spread doubt πŸ€–.

I wish the UN would do better on transparency and accountability πŸ’”. It's so sad that we're still not acting fast enough on climate change πŸ˜”. But hey, at least there are people like Gina McCarthy and Sheldon Whitehouse fighting for what's right πŸ’ͺ. Fingers crossed that global leaders will come together to make a real difference soon 🀞

so its crazy how trump's attacks on climate action are actually fueling resistance from cities and states 🀯. like, McCarthy's right that we can't let people hold us back from making progress. and I think it's smart of these cities and states to band together and set ambitious targets for reducing pollution - 56% is a big deal! 🌎

but what really gets me is how fossil fuel companies are trying to undermine our efforts with fake front groups spreading doubt about climate change πŸ’”. it's like, come on guys, we're onto you πŸ™„. and I agree that transparency and accountability will be crucial in shaping the future of global climate action - we need to hold people in power accountable for their actions.

and btw, I'm loving how Sheldon Whitehouse is calling out fossil fuel companies as "villains" in this story 😏. someone needs to keep it real on this issue! πŸ’ͺ

I'm so stoked to see US cities & states still pushing for climate action despite Trump's attempts to block them πŸŒŽπŸ’š #ClimateActionMatters #SustainabilityIsKey #TrumpCanTry

The fact that they're committed to reducing pollution by 56% is huge news! We should all be inspired to take action too 🌟 #GoGreen #CleanEnergyIsTheFuture

Gina McCarthy's words are so powerful - we can't let progress get held back by people who want to stand in the way 🚫 #ResistAndRevolutionize

I'm loving that Sheldon Whitehouse is speaking truth to power and calling out the fossil fuel industry for what they do 🀯 #FossilFuelScam

We need more leaders like these who are willing to take a stand against climate change and fight for transparency & accountability πŸ’ͺ #ClimateLeadersUnite

omg u guys i cant even right now! 😱 so like trump thinks he can just stop ppl from takin care of the planet but nope not on our watch πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ!! cities & states r all like "no way joe" πŸ’ͺ and they got a coalition goin on called america is all in πŸ”₯ they wanna reduce pollution by 56% by 2035 🌎 which sounds pretty realistic 2 me πŸ‘

and let's not 4get sheldon whitehouse is lowkey the real MVP 🀩 he's all like "resist trump" and "sue the admin" πŸ’― i'm kinda tempted 2 do that myself rn 🀣 anywayz even w/ trump tryin 2 block climate action, ppl r still gonna make a difference 🌈 cuz we got experts like gina mccarthy & sheldon whitehouse lookin out for us πŸ‘

I think it's pretty crazy how Trump is trying to shut down all these cities and states that are actually making a difference on climate change πŸ€―πŸ’¨. Like, what even is the point of having a president if they're just gonna let fossil fuel companies dictate policy? It's not like we haven't seen this movie before - it's always the same story: a bunch of powerful corporations getting in the way of progress and threatening our planet. I'm actually kinda stoked to see all these cities coming together as part of America Is All In, though - they're showing that even without federal support, you can still make a difference on climate change 🌎πŸ’ͺ

So I just read that even though Trump's trying to stop it, US cities and states are still super committed to reducing pollution πŸŒŽπŸ’š. They want to reduce planet-heating pollution by 56% by 2035! That's like, a big deal 😊. And they're not alone, other countries should do the same thing too πŸ‘«. But Trump is being all negative and trying to block their progress πŸ˜”. He's even trying to sue them in court 🚨. It's kinda weird that he doesn't want people to make clean energy more accessible πŸ’Έ.

I also heard that some big fossil fuel companies are behind this all 😳. They're spreading doubt about climate change and trying to stop everyone from making progress πŸ€₯. But it won't work! More people need to speak up and demand transparency πŸ‘Š. We need to hold these companies accountable for their actions πŸ’ͺ. It's a tough fight, but we can do it if we all work together πŸ’•.

Trump's climate denial is just delaying the inevitable πŸŒŽπŸ’¨. Cities & states are taking matters into their own hands, and it's about time we see some real progress on reducing emissions 😊. We need more transparency & accountability from our leaders, especially when it comes to funding & lobbying πŸ’ΈπŸ‘€

So I was reading this article and I'm thinking, like, how's it possible that these states and cities are still pushing forward with climate change policies despite Trump's efforts to block them? πŸ€” I made a little diagram to illustrate my point:
```
+---------------+
| States/City |
| Are Still |
| Pushing Forward|
+---------------+
|
| Federal
| Re-Engagement
v
+---------------+
| More Impact? |
| Possibly! |
+---------------+
```
I mean, it's not like they're completely powerless against the admin. They're still trying to sue them over obstruction and all that. It's like a little game of cat and mouse, but I think the states and cities are winning so far πŸ†

And can we talk about how much influence fossil fuel companies have on global climate action? 🀯 Like, it's not just the US, this is a global problem and they need to be held accountable. Whitehouse called them "villains" for a reason! πŸ˜‚

Wow 🀯! I mean, can you believe all these states and cities are still fighting for their climate rights despite the admin's constant attacks? It's so inspiring to see people taking a stand like that πŸ’ͺ. The idea of cutting planet-heating pollution by 56% is amazing, and it just goes to show that even with all this resistance from Trump, we can still make progress 🌟.

I don’t usually comment but... I think it’s kinda inspiring to see US cities and states standing up against the Trump administration's climate change attacks 🌎πŸ’ͺ. It shows that even when there's pushback from those in power, ordinary people can still make a difference. And it's not just about the US – the global community needs more leaders like this who are willing to take on the fossil fuel industry and demand action on climate change πŸ’₯. Of course, we need more transparency and accountability too 🀝, but I think it's a good start that these cities and states are taking bold steps towards a cleaner future 🌱.

πŸ˜’ "The earth has enough resources for our need, but not enough for our greed" πŸ’” This is exactly what's happening with the US cities and states refusing to give up on climate action despite Trump's attacks. We can't let greed win here - we have to keep pushing forward for a better future 🌟

im so hyped 🀩 that cities & states r still goin strong on climate action despite trump's attempts to stop em πŸš«β€β™‚οΈπŸŒŽ i think its awesome thats america is all in coalition pushing for 56% reduction in planet-heating pollution by 2035 πŸ’ͺ the more we stick together, the less likely we r to get intimidated by admin tactics 🀯

I feel like US cities and states are taking a huge risk by pushing back against the Trump admin's climate denial, 🀯 but at the same time I'm really hyped that they're making progress on reducing pollution, it's like 56% below 2005 levels by 2035 is crazy πŸ’ͺ. But what's up with the admin trying to block policies and incentives for clean energy? It's like they're not even trying to hide their bias πŸ˜’. Anyways, I think global climate leaders need to step up their game and be more transparent about who's funding participation in climate talks, that would be totally epic πŸŽ‰

omg this is so frustrating 🀯! I mean, can't we just work together on this whole climate thing? it's like, we're all in this together, right? 🌎 but no, trump has to go and try to block everything πŸ™„. and meanwhile, cities and states are over here trying to make a difference πŸ’ͺ. I love that Gina McCarthy is speaking up for them, she's so brave πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. and Sheldon Whitehouse is totally right, we can't let the fossil fuel industry dictate what we do πŸ”’. it's like, we know how this story ends, and it's not good πŸ€•. but still, I think there's hope 🌟. if we can just get our federal government on board, maybe we can actually make a difference πŸ’ͺ.
