'I'd get out of bed, and oh boy, there it is': what to know about plantar fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis: A Painful Reality for Millions

The sudden onset of sharp pain in the heel is a common experience for many runners and joggers. Recreational athlete's worst nightmare came true when [redacted] years of inactivity led to a half-marathon attempt, only to be met with an unwelcome surprise upon waking up the next morning.

According to Dr. Lance Silverman, board-certified orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon, plantar fasciitis affects approximately 2 million people each year in the US and roughly 10% of the population will experience it at some point in their lives. The UK is no exception, with a staggering number of individuals succumbing to this debilitating condition.

Even high-profile athletes aren't immune to the perils of plantar fasciitis. Dr. Amiethab Aiyer, division chief of foot and ankle surgery in the Johns Hopkins department of orthopedic surgery, revealed that he has recently experienced the painful affliction due to an unexpected increase in treadmill activity.

So, what exactly is plantar fasciitis? To understand this condition, one must delve into the intricacies of the plantar fascia. This thick band of fibrous tissue stretches from the bottom of the heel to the toes and serves as a vital ligament that connects the bones of the foot. The plantar fascia works tirelessly to support our day-to-day activities.

However, when this ligament becomes inflamed or develops microtears, pain sets in – specifically, sharp pain in the bottom of one's heel. This inflammation worsens after periods of rest and lessens as movement increases. Approximately 80% of cases resolve on their own within a year.

The question remains: what causes plantar fasciitis? According to Dr. Silverman, this condition arises from overloading the plantar fascia. Sudden increases in activity, prolonged standing, weight gain, abnormal arches, and repetitive stress all contribute to its development.

Prevention is key – or so they say. Strengthening the muscles of the feet can help alleviate the strain on the plantar fascia. Toe curls and marble pickups are two simple exercises that can get you started. Stretching the calf muscles and Achilles tendon regularly also plays a crucial role in preventing inflammation.

Increasing activity levels gradually is essential, rather than suddenly ramping up like some individuals do. Wearing shoes that match your environment and activity level ensures proper support for the foot muscles.

If left untreated, plantar fasciitis can lead to chronic heel pain. Treatment usually begins with rest, followed by activity modification and stretching exercises. Physical therapy often proves effective in addressing this condition. Corticosteroid injections, shockwave therapy, or plasma injections may be necessary if symptoms persist after several months. In extreme cases, surgery might become an option.

For those who experience sudden onset plantar fasciitis, it's essential to avoid prolonged periods of immobility and seek medical attention if the pain persists beyond a week or two. A healthcare provider can recommend the best course of action – which may include physical therapy, corticosteroid injections, or other treatments.

In conclusion, plantar fasciitis is an all-too-common condition that affects millions worldwide. Understanding its causes, prevention methods, and treatment options is crucial for those seeking to enjoy running and other high-impact activities without the risk of heel pain. By taking proactive measures and being mindful of our foot health, we can avoid becoming victims of this painful affliction.

🐱 Umm I was just reading about plantar fasciitis and it's crazy how many people are affected by it 🤯 Like 2 million a year in the US? That's like, what's even the deal with that? 😂 Is it because we're all doing more stuff on our feet nowadays? Or is it actually related to how our feet are supposed to work? I mean, I've heard of people getting it from running too much, but I thought that was just an excuse for not training 🏃‍♀️

And what's up with the exercises they recommend to prevent it? Toe curls and marble pickups? Sounds like a weird workout routine 🤔 Is that even something you can do at home or do you have to go to a special gym? And are these exercises actually effective in preventing plantar fasciitis? I want to try them out but I need more info 😅

I'm not a fan of all these "prevention" tips 😒 They're like a bunch of Band-Aid solutions that don't address the root cause of the problem. I mean, strengthening your foot muscles sounds good and all, but what about those who can't just waltz off to the gym every day? What about the people with real jobs that involve standing for hours on end? Shouldn't we be talking about more practical solutions like better workplace ergonomics or accessible healthcare options for low-income folks? I'm not saying don't exercise, but let's not forget about the systemic issues that make it hard for some people to even get proper treatment in the first place 💸

Ugh, I just got back from a 10km run and my feet are killing me 🤕😓. Plantar fasciitis is such a common problem for runners like me. I swear, it's like the more we train, the more we're gonna end up with this pain 😩. Can't they just invent shoes that can sense when you're overdoing it and automatically stop production or something? 👠💔

omg you guys I cant believe how many ppl get plantar fasciitis every year 🤯 2 million in the US alone is crazy! 😲 I think it's so important to take care of our feet especially if you're into running or jogging. I've heard that strengthening your foot muscles can really help prevent it, like toe curls and calf stretches 👣👞. We should all be aware of the signs and symptoms and not ignore them if we start feeling pain in our heels 😔. It's better to get checked out by a doc early on rather than letting it turn into chronic heel pain 🤕. Let's all do our part to prevent plantar fasciitis! 💪

ugh 2 million ppl r affected by plantar fasciitis every year 🤕 that's like, almost half a million new cases each month! what's the deal with all these sudden increases in activity? shouldn't our bodies be able to handle it or something? 🤷‍♀️ anyway gotta say tho, strengthening those foot muscles is def key prevention tip - my friend did toe curls and marble pickups and now her plantar fasciitis is a thing of the past 💪

Ugh 🤕 plantar fasciitis is no joke, I've been dealing with it for ages! 😩 my friend tried to do a marathon after months of not running and ended up with a huge pain in her heel that wouldn't go away 😴 she had to get cortisone shots and physical therapy just to be able to walk again. 🤯 it's crazy how something as simple as overtraining can lead to such chronic pain. 💔 I've seen people try to "tough it out" but trust me, it only gets worse if you don't take care of your feet 👣

I don’t usually comment but... I feel like plantar fasciitis is kinda a mystery to me 🤔. Like, how do people not know they're gonna get it just from doing something normal? I was chatting with my friend the other day and she was complaining about this sharp pain in her heel after a run. She said she's been doing it for months now 🏃‍♀️. I don't know... seems like it could be avoided if you just take it easy or stretch more, but I guess that's easier said than done 😅. Anyway, just thought I'd throw my two cents out there... 👀

I mean, plantar fasciitis is just like when I used to get a killer cramp in my calves during long walks with my grandma back in the day 🤕... it was so bad! But seriously, 2 million people a year? That's crazy! I remember my friend's cousin breaking his heel at a music festival once and he was limping around for weeks 😓. It just seems like everyone gets it nowadays. And don't even get me started on those exercises they're supposed to do to prevent it... toe curls and all that jazz 🤣. But hey, if it works!

omg u guys I was talking 2 my friends in school yesterday & one of them is literally struggling w/ plantar fasciitis rn 🤕 she's been running every day after school & woke up wit a sharp pain in her heel 🙈 Dr Silverman says it's from overloading the plantar fascia... like, duh! who doesn't know dat u need 2 ease into exercise lol. anyway, my friend is thinkin of gettin physical therapy & stretching exercises, which i totally agree w/ 💪. u should totes check out toe curls & marble pickups online, they're apparently super helpful 🤓

Ugh, plantar fasciitis 🤕😩 is like, so common nowadays... I mean, I know it's not all bad news, but why do we need to write a whole article about it? Can't they just give us some simple exercises or tips to avoid it? "Strengthening the muscles of the feet" sounds like a total workout 🏋️‍♀️. And what's with the lack of info on how to prevent it in the first place? A quick search online would've given me all the answers I needed... 😒

omg plantar fasciitis is so real i had it like 3 years ago after a big hike 🏞️ my friend told me about toe curls to prevent it 💪 u gotta be careful with ur activity levels and wear comfy shoes 👠 rest is key lol but honestly its super painful 😓

😬 plantar fasciitis is so painful 😩 and frustrating, especially when you're trying to get back into running after a break 🏃‍♀️. I think it's crazy how common it is - 2 million people in the US alone? 🤯 that's like, half of all marathon runners! 🏅 It's all about being mindful of your foot health and taking care of those muscles 💪. Simple exercises like toe curls and calf stretches can make a huge difference 👍. And let's be real, gradual activity increases are key - no more sudden spikes in fitness level for me! 😂

I was thinking about my cat's hairballs the other day... like, have you ever noticed how they just get stuck in weird places? 🐈😹 I mean, I know it's not exactly related to plantar fasciitis or anything, but it's just so fascinating how cats manage to cough up those little balls of fluff. And then I started thinking about shoes... did you know that some shoe brands have crazy amounts of arch support? Like, it's like wearing a mini-spa treatment on your feet! 💅🏼 So yeah, plantar fasciitis is a thing, but let's not forget about the importance of good footwear 😂.

omg 2 million ppl in us alone get plantar fasciitis every year 🤯 thats crazy! u gotta stay active but not too much lol like, start slow & listen to ur body 💪🏽 also why do ppl think sudden activity changes are a good idea?? 🙄

I'm low-key shocked that 2 million people in the US alone are affected by plantar fasciitis every year 🤯. Like, I get it, overloading the plantar fascia is a thing and stuff, but that's not exactly rocket science, right? Anyway, I think the key takeaway here is to just be more mindful of our activity levels and foot health in general 💪. Strengthening those pesky little muscles and stretching regularly can go a long way in preventing inflammation 🔥. And let's be real, who doesn't love a good toe curl or marble pickup? 🤸‍♀️

😩 I feel like we're living in a world where everyone's obsessed with going crazy and pushing their bodies to the limit... Newsflash: your body is not a machine! 🤖 We need to stop treating exercise as some kind of punishment and start listening to our inner warnings signs before it's too late. 💔 I'm so tired of people ignoring the importance of recovery time and just diving back into intense workouts without giving their bodies a chance to heal. It's like, what's the point of running a marathon if you're just going to end up with a lifetime of chronic pain? 🏃‍♀️
