LAPD chief defies Newsom's mask ban for federal immigration agents citing safety concerns

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Chief Jim McDonnell has announced that his department will not enforce California Governor Gavin Newsom's directive banning federal immigration agents from wearing masks or hiding their faces while conducting operations in the state.

McDonnell cited "tactical safety concerns" and stated that enforcing a misdemeanor violation on another law enforcement agency could be unsafe. He also emphasized the importance of de-escalation over ramping up situations, particularly when interacting with agitated crowds and federal immigration agents who are doing their job.

The ban was enacted in September 2025, following a series of immigration raids in Los Angeles. Critics had argued that masked ICE agents posed a public safety risk by trying to shield their identities from being leaked. However, proponents of the ban countered that it would allow for more effective enforcement and deter potential threats.

McDonnell's decision not to enforce the directive has sparked debate, with some hailing it as a pragmatic response and others criticizing what they see as a lack of commitment to public safety.

omg u guys i'm literally low-key shocked by this news 🤯 so like LA police chief is def saying he's gonna let federal immigration agents rock their masks on the job without getting in trouble lol but at the same time some ppl are hailing it as a super pragmatic move bc it's all about de-escalation and stuff 🙏 meanwhile others are all like wut about public safety tho? like isn't this just gonna encourage more agitated crowds and stuff? idk man i feel like this is a bit of a mixed bag but also kinda understandable at the same time? 😂 what do u guys think?

🤔 This is such a grey area thing going on... I mean, I get where LAPD Chief McDonnell is coming from - don't wanna compromise their own safety or create more drama when all they're trying to do is enforce the law. But at the same time, it's like, what about public safety? Those masked ICE agents were causing a stir and people were worried. You'd think that would be a valid concern to address somehow?

And I gotta ask, isn't this just another example of how these two sides don't communicate well? Like, one minute there's a ban on masks, the next minute LAPD is like "nope, we're not enforcing that". It feels like they're just sorta... winging it. 🤷‍♀️

I'm kinda disappointed in this one 🤔. I get that LAPD Chief McDonnell is tryin' to avoid any potential safety risks, but can't we find a balance here? 🤷‍♂️ I mean, the whole point of the ban was to keep people safe from... well, let's just say "unsavory" situations 😒. By not enforcin' it, aren't we just lettin' things slide? 🔒 I'm all for de-escalation and avoidin' unnecessary conflicts, but this feels like a cop-out 🚫 to me. What if those masked ICE agents are really puttin' people in danger? Shouldn't we be takin' that seriously? 🤦‍♂️

man i dont get why they're making such a big deal about this... like, if federal immigration agents wanna wear masks or not its their choice, right? 🤷‍♂️ i mean, i get that there's been some stuff going on in LA and people are worried about public safety, but enforcing a law just cuz someone else isnt following it seems kinda unnecessary to me. plus, it sounds like the LAPD chief is trying to find a balance between keeping people safe and not escalating situations, which i think is a pretty reasonable approach... 🤔

You know, I was at the beach last weekend and saw this really cool street artist dude doing these massive murals on the sand with his feet 🌊🎨. And I was thinking, have you ever tried drawing with your feet? It's actually pretty hard when the board is all sandy lol. But seriously, it made me think about how art can be found in the most unexpected places, like law enforcement. Like, what if some of these police officers were also artists or musicians on the side? Maybe we'd get a whole new wave of community policing through creative expression 🎶💫. Oh wait, and I just remembered that my cat just knocked over my coffee cup... anyway 😂.

idk how can't enforce this rule be safe for everyone 🤔 i mean, if you're doing your job, shouldn't you wear a mask like normal ppl? it's not like you're gonna reveal any sensitive info by covering up... or so it seems 😬 the police chief is worried about "tactical safety concerns" but what about the public's right to know who's coming for them? 🤷‍♀️ i'm all for de-escalation and stuff, but come on, can't we find a middle ground here? 🤔

omg this is so crazy lol 😂 I mean i get where the governor is comin from tryin to hide ur face cuz u never know who's gonna be leakin out info about u or somethin but on the flip side it's also about keepin ppl safe like if an immigration agent is wearin a mask they can't really be held accountable if somethin goes down 🤔

i think it's a bit of both tho i mean we gotta protect our people but at the same time we can't just throw up a wall and say dont enforce it that's not how justice works 🚫 i feel like the LAPD chief is doin what he thinks is rite in the situation which is good 👌

I was just thinking about how LA is really struggling with its traffic situation 🚗😩. I mean, have you ever tried to drive on the 405 during rush hour? It's like, no thanks! Anyway, back to this story... I feel kinda bad for the LAPD Chief, though. I can see why he wouldn't want to enforce a rule that could potentially put his officers in harm's way. But at the same time, it's hard not to wonder if there are better ways to address public safety concerns without taking a hard pass on an existing law 🤔.

By the way, have you guys tried those new avocado toast spots in Silverlake? I heard they're supposed to be amazing 😋.

🤔👮‍♂️ gotta ask why LAPD isn't enforcing that mask ban? 🎭🕵️‍♀️ I get where Chief McDonnell is coming from, but think about it: if federal agents are hiding their faces, how's that gonna make the situation better? 😒 they're not doing this for fun, you know? 👮‍♂️ They gotta do their job. 🤝 And what about public safety? 💉 shouldn't they be worried more about keeping people safe than themselves? 🤷‍♀️ I guess it's all about weighing the risks and taking a stance... or not 🙃👀

I don't get why LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell is so chill about enforcing that mask ban 🤷‍♂️. I mean, critics had valid concerns that masked ICE agents were hiding something - literally! 🚫 And now that the ban is in place, he's basically saying it's not worth risking his officers' safety to follow a law that was put in place for a reason 😒. It's all about de-escalation, but what if someone's trying to hide a gun? 🤔 Shouldn't public safety be the top priority? 🚨

I think LAPD Chief McDonnell made the right call 🤔. I mean, imagine if every time you're trying to do your job, someone else is trying to tell you how to do it too? It's already stressful enough being an immigration agent, and now they have to worry about some politician breathing down their necks. Plus, masks can be pretty effective at preventing the spread of diseases, so it's not like it's going to hurt anyone. I'm all for keeping people safe, especially when it comes to health issues 🤒.

I'm kinda surprised by this move from LAPD Chief McDonnell 🤔. I mean, you gotta think about the potential risks here - those masked ICE agents can definitely cause tension, especially if people are already on edge due to past immigration raids 😬. But at the same time, enforcing a law that's aimed at keeping them safe seems like a pretty big ask for the LAPD.

It's all about finding that balance, you know? I get why McDonnell is trying to prioritize de-escalation - it makes total sense in those high-pressure situations 🙏. But on the other hand, if people start getting hurt because of this ban being ignored... yeah, that's not good for anyone 🚨.

I'm still weighing my thoughts on this one, but I think what really matters is making sure everyone involved - LAPD officers, ICE agents, and civilians alike - feels safe and respected 🤝. If we can't get to that, then what's the point? 😊

I don't get why he's not gonna follow that order 🤔... I mean, I get what he's saying about tactical safety concerns and all that, but isn't the point of wearing masks supposed to protect people from getting hurt? It just seems like a slippery slope to me 🚧. What if some of those masked ICE agents are actually protecting themselves from, you know, actual threats? 🤷‍♂️ And I don't think it's cool that they're still gonna be wearing masks when the law says they shouldn't... I guess that's just one of them gray areas though 💡.

🤔 This is just another example of the LA Police Department trying to thumb their nose at the state government. I mean, come on, Governor Newsom's directive was in place for a reason - to keep people safe, especially in situations where federal agents are involved. By not enforcing it, Chief McDonnell is essentially saying that public safety takes a backseat to "tactical safety concerns". 🚨 But what about the fact that this ban was put in place after a series of immigration raids? That's when we need to be extra vigilant about public safety! 😬 It just smells like another case of law enforcement trying to do their own thing, rather than following orders from their higher-ups. And let's not forget, as a police chief, McDonnell has a duty to protect the public - so where's that commitment coming from? 🤷‍♂️

I'm literally stressing about this news 🤯... I mean, imagine if our school security team was allowed to wear masks during drills or something... how would we even know who's who?! 😂 But for real, the LAPD chief is saying that enforcing a law on another law enforcement agency could be unsafe? That doesn't seem right to me... shouldn't they prioritize public safety over following some new directive just because it's not their preference? 🤔 And what about those immigration agents trying to do their job while keeping their identities hidden? They're not just, like, hiding behind masks for no reason... there's a method to their madness 💡. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this whole thing plays out in the real world... meanwhile, I'm over here worried about what could go wrong 🤷‍♀️.

I'm so down with LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell's stance on this 🤦‍♂️. Like, who needs masks anyway? It's not like the federal immigration agents are gonna hurt anyone without one... right? And what's with all the fuss about "public safety"? It's just a few masked agents doing their job. We should be supporting our law enforcement, not giving them excuses to hide behind a mask. I mean, if they're really worried about their safety, maybe they should stick to desk jobs...

🤔 I'm kinda surprised by this decision from LAPD Chief McDonnell. On one hand, I get why he's concerned about enforcing another law enforcement agency's directive - you don't wanna create unnecessary conflict or put officers in harm's way. But on the other hand, isn't it their job to keep people safe? 🙃 I'm not sure what "tactical safety concerns" exactly means, but if they're worried about agitated crowds and federal immigration agents, shouldn't that be a reason to take extra precautions? 🤷‍♂️

This is kinda weird, you know? So the LAPD Chief says he won't enforce that mask ban on federal immigration agents because it could be unsafe... but at the same time, critics say the original ban was meant to prevent public safety risks from masked agents trying not to get their identities out 🤔. It's like, what's the goal here? Is it really about keeping people safe or is it more about allowing those agents to do their jobs without being held accountable for what happens? 👀 The whole thing feels kinda messy and I'm not sure who's right or wrong... 🤷‍♂️

🤦‍♂️ can you believe this? So now LAPD is just gonna let ICE run amok in LA without any oversight? I mean, what's next? Are we gonna have a "let's all just get along" vibe where everyone just ignores the law and hopes for the best? 🙄 Tactical safety concerns, huh? That sounds like cop-speak for "we don't wanna mess with ICE". And de-escalation? Yeah, right. When they're the ones armed to the teeth and wearing masks... 😂 Give me a break. This decision is gonna make things even more sketchy in LA. 🚨
