Letitia James says mortgage fraud charges should be dropped due to "outrageous government conduct"

New York Attorney General Letitia James is making a desperate bid to have her mortgage fraud charges dropped, alleging that the Trump administration's actions are nothing short of "outrageous government conduct". In a 22-page filing, James' lawyers claim that the charges against her were brought about by a months-long campaign of intimidation and harassment by top officials at the Fair Housing Finance Authority (FHFA) and the Justice Department.

According to James' lawyers, FHFA Director Bill Pulte, who oversaw the investigation into James, acted with "illegality and a disregard for the law", using his position to target her in a clear bid to punish her for opposing President Trump. They point to messages between Fannie Mae officials that suggest the case against James is not strong enough, and claim that Pulte's actions were driven by a personal animus towards the Attorney General.

The investigation began after Pulte referred James for prosecution, citing several instances of alleged mortgage fraud - but James' lawyers argue that these claims are "patently unconstitutional" and intended to intimidate her. They also claim that Pulte's appointment as chairman of both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is itself a breach of regulations.

In addition to targeting Pulte, James' lawyers have also singled out Ed Martin, the U.S. Pardon Attorney, for criticism. In August, Martin sent a letter to James' office urging her to resign from office, which James' lawyers claim was an attempt to intimidate her and bring about a "vindictive prosecution".

The latest development in this saga comes as Lindsey Halligan, the interim U.S. Attorney leading the investigation into James, is herself facing scrutiny over her appointment to the post. James' lawyers argue that Halligan's appointment is unlawful and that she should be disqualified from overseeing the case against their client.

At the heart of this controversy is a long-running feud between Letitia James and President Trump, who has repeatedly attacked her and called for her prosecution. In 2022, James sued Trump and his company over allegations of fraud, which a judge ultimately ruled in her favour - but not before Trump's team was ordered to pay more than $350 million in damages.

As the case against James continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether she will ultimately face conviction or if the charges will be dropped in light of these new allegations of "outrageous government conduct".

omg have u tried that new food truck at pier 1? ๐Ÿด they have this insane Korean BBQ burrito thing that's literally changed my life ๐Ÿคฏ i mean i know it sounds weird but trust me it's a game changer... btw did u hear about the latest celebrity sighting in nyc? saw jennifer lawrence sipping coffee in soho with her squad ๐Ÿ‘€

๐Ÿคฏ can't believe this is still happening. James is just trying to protect herself from a witch hunt that's been months in the making. The Trump admin is trying to intimidate her into quitting but it backfired and now they're facing even more scrutiny. ๐Ÿ’ผ It's all about politics and power play, folks. Pulte and Martin are just pawns in this game. ๐Ÿค‘ And what's with Lindsey Halligan? She should be disqualified from the case right away. This whole thing is getting out of hand ๐Ÿšจ. If I were a lawyer for James, I'd be all over these allegations ASAP ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿ˜ฌ Can you believe how far this is going? It's like the whole system is stacked against Letitia James. I'm talking about the Trump administration, FHFA, Justice Department... it's a whole mess. If it's true that Pulte was trying to punish her for opposing President Trump, that's just outrageous ๐Ÿคฏ. And Ed Martin's letter? Come on, that's just intimidation tactics at its finest ๐Ÿ˜ก.

I don't even get why we're still dealing with this stuff in 2025. Can't we have some peace of mind knowing our AGs are safe from political vendettas? The fact that Lindsey Halligan's appointment is being questioned too? ๐Ÿค” It's like the whole thing is a big game of musical chairs, but instead of chairs, it's careers and reputations.

Letitia James was right to sue Trump and his company back in 2022. If she can't even get justice for herself, what hope does anyone else have? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ It's time for the truth to come out about this whole ordeal, and if that means the charges against her are dropped, so be it. Justice should prevail over politics ๐Ÿ˜Š.

You know what's weird? I was thinking about trying out this new avocado toast recipe at home and I saw a YouTube video of some chef making it look so easy ๐Ÿคฃ. But what really caught my attention was the way they used this special type of tomato that's supposed to be super flavorful. Have you guys ever tried those? I've been wanting to get my hands on some, but they're like, super hard to find in stores here... anyway, back to Letitia James and her mortgage fraud charges ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. It sounds like a total mess, but I guess that's what happens when you get caught up in politics ๐Ÿ˜‚.

๐Ÿค” This whole thing is getting crazy. I mean, I've been following it for ages and it just seems like Letitia James is being targeted by people who really don't like her. Like, what's the point of all these accusations? Are they trying to make an example out of her or something? ๐Ÿ˜’ It's all so suspicious...

๐Ÿค” I'm not surprised by this latest twist. If what Letitia James is saying is true and there's a clear case of harassment and intimidation, then the whole investigation should come to a halt ASAP. Like, who does Ed Martin think he is sending threatening letters to public officials? And now they're questioning Lindsey Halligan's appointment too... this just stinks of a witch hunt ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. The fact that Trump himself has been attacking James non-stop since she started investigating him in 2022 doesn't help the credibility of the whole thing. I'm rooting for Letitia, though - if there's one person who deserves justice, it's her ๐Ÿ’ช

I'm not surprised at all that Letitia James is trying to get her mortgage fraud charges dropped ๐Ÿค”. I mean, think about it - a high-profile Attorney General like her going up against the President and his team? It's a no-brainer that she'd be getting some intense pressure from all sides.

But seriously, it's starting to look like there's been some pretty shady stuff going on behind the scenes ๐Ÿ˜. I mean, messages between Fannie Mae officials suggesting the case against James isn't strong enough? That sounds fishy to me ๐ŸŸ. And let's not forget about Ed Martin's letter urging James to resign - that kind of thing can be a real intimidation tactic.

And then there's the whole situation with Lindsey Halligan's appointment as interim U.S. Attorney ๐Ÿค”. I'm not sure what to make of all this, but one thing's for sure: it's going to be interesting to see how it all plays out in court ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿคฏ this is getting crazy ๐Ÿšจ! I mean, come on ๐Ÿ™„ - a months-long campaign of intimidation and harassment from top officials? That's just not right ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. And now they're saying James' lawyers are trying to manipulate the system again ๐Ÿคฅ? It's like something out of a movie ๐ŸŽฌ, but unfortunately it's all too real ๐Ÿ˜”.

I'm seriously worried about Lindsey Halligan, though ๐Ÿค• - if she's being questioned over her appointment, that's not good ๐Ÿ’”. And what's with Ed Martin's letter to James' office? That was definitely not cool ๐Ÿ˜’.

I hope Letitia James can get some justice in the end ๐Ÿ’ช. She's been through enough already ๐Ÿ‘Š. The whole thing just feels so... corrupt ๐Ÿค. But I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out โฐ. Fingers crossed for her! โœจ

๐Ÿ˜ฌ I mean, come on... this is getting crazy! Letitia James is being accused of something just because she's been going after Trump and his crew? ๐Ÿค‘ It sounds like a clear case of retaliation to me. And now they're saying Lindsey Halligan should be disqualified from leading the investigation because of her own appointment? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ That's just another layer of corruption if you ask me.

And what really gets my goat is that FHFA Director Bill Pulte is getting away with all this drama. I mean, we know Trump and his team have been trying to intimidate and harass James for months, but it sounds like Pulte is taking it to a whole new level by using his position to target her specifically.

Can't these people just do their jobs without playing politics? It's so frustrating when good people get dragged down by bad behavior. ๐Ÿ’” I'm all about fairness and due process, not this kind of outrageous government conduct.

๐Ÿค” I'm not buying this whole thing. It sounds like a classic case of sour grapes to me. Letitia James was already getting heat for her mortgage fraud allegations, and now she's trying to deflect by claiming the Trump administration is just trying to get back at her? ๐Ÿ™„ Give me a break.

And what's with all these personal attacks on Pulte and Martin? It sounds like they're more interested in covering their own backsides than actually investigating James. I mean, who appoints someone as interim U.S. Attorney without so much as a background check? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

I'm also skeptical of the timing of all these developments. Is this just some clever PR stunt to distract from the real issues facing New York state? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ We need to keep a close eye on this one and see where it really goes.

๐Ÿ™„ I'm tellin' ya, this is some wild stuff. Like back in my day, we didn't have all these power struggles and whatnot between politicians. I mean, I know it's not exactly new, but the drama is just crazy right now. ๐Ÿคฏ So Letitia James is gettin' slammed with these mortgage fraud charges and she's all like "this is a setup"... and honestly, who can blame her? ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ The whole thing just reeks of politics gone wrong.

And don't even get me started on the Trump administration. Like, seriously, what did they expect when you're goin' after someone as outspoken as Letitia James? ๐Ÿ˜‚ You'd think she'd be the last person to crack under pressure. And now Lindsey Halligan is gettin' scrutiny for her appointment... it's like a never-endin' game of musical chairs over here.

I just hope this whole thing doesn't mess with the integrity of our justice system too much. We need to make sure that everyone, no matter how powerful they are, gets treated fairly under the law. ๐Ÿ’ฏ

can you believe this? ๐Ÿคฏ it's like they're trying to take down Letitia James for speaking out against Trump and his crazy behavior. it's not right that she's being targeted by top officials at the FHFA and Justice Department, just because she's been a thorn in their side. ๐Ÿ˜ก i mean, if they're really concerned about mortgage fraud, why are they so desperate to silence her? and what's with all these weird appointments and power struggles? it's like they're trying to create chaos and undermine the Attorney General's authority. ๐Ÿค” my gut tells me that something fishy is going on here and I hope Letitia James gets a fair shake in court ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿค” i dont think lets focus on letitia james here. the whole thing feels like a big mess. what really got me is how ed martin, the u.s pardon attorney, sent that letter to james' office urging her to resign... sounds like intimidation tactics to me ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ and halligan's appointment as interim u.S. attorney seems shady too ๐Ÿ‘€ have we seen enough evidence of "outrageous government conduct" yet? or is this just another trump thing where he tries to bully people into backing down? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿค” Come on, let's get real here. If Letitia James is accusing the Trump admin of outrageous gov't conduct, then why isn't she taking this to court herself? Like, shouldn't a politician be above all that drama if they're so concerned about it? ๐Ÿ˜‚ And what's with the timing of these filings? Is she trying to distract from something else?

I mean, I get it, nobody likes being targeted for their politics. But Letitia James was the one who took on Trump in court and won, like, a major victory ๐Ÿ’ช. So why is she suddenly all dramatic about this mortgage thing now? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ And what about all these officials' personal animos towards her? If that's the case, then shouldn't they be taking it to a neutral forum instead of trying to railroad her?

This whole thing just smells like a PR stunt to me. James is probably just trying to stay in the spotlight and keep her name relevant ๐Ÿ”ฅ. Newsflash, Letitia: being a politician isn't about playing the victim; it's about getting stuff done ๐Ÿ’ผ.

๐Ÿคฃ I mean, this is getting wilder than a Kardashian family reunion! So, Letitia James is saying the Trump administration is trying to get her for being a thorn in their side, and now she's accusing them of being the bad guys? ๐Ÿ˜‚ It's like they're playing a game of "you can't catch me" and she's just running around like crazy. And poor Lindsey Halligan, getting dragged into this mess too? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ I mean, can't these people just get along? Maybe they should all just have a big ol' cupcake and talk it out... but nope, politics! ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿค” I'm telling you, it's a total mess... but at the same time, I think Letitia James is totally justified in her actions ๐Ÿ™Œ. The Trump admin is acting like total bullies trying to intimidate her into backing down, and if she doesn't cooperate, they'll just keep throwing more and more crap at her ๐Ÿ”ฅ. But on the other hand... has she really been that squeaky clean all these years? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ I mean, she was in office when some shady stuff went down, and now she's trying to spin it as the Trumps are out to get her ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ. I don't know what to believe anymore! ๐Ÿ˜‚

I'm so worried about Letitia James. It's totally unfair that she's being bullied by top officials at the FHFA and Justice Department ๐Ÿค•. I mean, can you believe Bill Pulte was acting like this because he has a personal beef with her? It's outrageous! ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ And now Lindsey Halligan is facing scrutiny over her own appointment... it just goes to show that people in power are not above the law ๐Ÿ’ผ. Letitia James is just trying to do her job and she deserves better than this kind of treatment from politicians ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ.

this whole thing is getting out of hand ๐Ÿคฏ. someone needs to take a step back and look at the bigger picture here. it's not about letitia james vs trump, it's about the entire system that's supposed to be above politics ๐Ÿ“ˆ. if there's even a whiff of harassment or intimidation going on, that's a major red flag ๐Ÿ”ด. and now lindsey halligan is facing scrutiny too? that just adds more fuel to the fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ. what's really going on here? is it possible that these charges are being brought forward not because they're strong enough, but because trump wants them to be? ๐Ÿค”. we need some real investigative reporting into this story, not just armchair speculation ๐Ÿ˜’.

๐Ÿšจ Can't believe the games being played here. AG Letitia James is trying to take down her own investigation with allegations of government harassment ๐Ÿ˜’. This just a huge distraction from the real issue at hand - mortgage fraud ๐Ÿ’ธ.
