Harry Enfield, the comedian behind the hit TV show Harry Enfield and Chums, has revealed the behind-the-scenes antics that went into creating one of his most infamous films - Kevin and Perry Go Large.
According to Enfield, the duo's latest escapade was inspired by their previous work on the show, which featured a similar 'Wayne's World' vibe. "We'd done Kevin and Perry on Harry Enfield and Chums and thought it would be fun to make a Wayne's World-y thing while we still had the impetus of the TV programme," he explained.
The film was shot over just 12 days in Ibiza, with the entire production team given a significant budget. However, not everything went according to plan. "We invented the Inbetweeners basically!" Enfield chuckled, recalling how they were able to scrounge up extras from the nightclub crowd instead of relying on paid actors.
The notorious "eyeball" scene, where Perry's character is subjected to an endless barrage of crap while Enfield's character looks on in disgust, was actually a last-minute addition to the script. The original plan was for Kevin and Perry to go on a boat trip with the girls, but when they couldn't find any extras, Enfield came up with the idea to create a fake poo using polystyrene and sweetcorn.
When asked about the film's reception, Enfield admitted that it didn't exactly get the response he had hoped for. "People hated it so much they wanted to burn the cinema down," he said wryly. However, in France, the poster read: "Kevin et Perry, un film trash", which perhaps says more about the French sense of humor.
Despite its initial reception, Kevin and Perry Go Large has developed a loyal following over the years, with fans still quoting lines from the film and admiring Enfield's creative genius. As for Enfield himself, he's now too old for another sequel - although he did attempt to write one once or twice in his youth.
But what was it like working on the set of Kevin and Perry? According to Enfield, it was a wild ride. "We were fitted with remote control penises that worked by remote control," he revealed, recalling how the crew would congregate in a bar at the end of each day's filming and drink Choccy-Woccy - a lethal brandy, vodka and milk chocolate concoction that Enfield credited to co-star Rhys Ifans.
The success of Kevin and Perry Go Large also spawned a few more opportunities for the duo. "Since we were playing a couple of hormonal, randy teenagers," Enfield reminisced, he was approached with several scripts - but most of them were pretty dull. As a woman in her mid-30s at the time, Enfield was thrilled to have the chance to play a 14-year-old boy on screen.
Now, nearly 30 years after its release, Kevin and Perry Go Large remains a cult classic that still holds a special place in some old hearts. And who knows - maybe one day we'll see another installment from the duo. But for now, Enfield is content to reminisce about the good old days of filmmaking, when anything seemed possible and the only thing more fun than playing pranks on your mates was making people laugh.
